Summary
The period of national awakening in Ukraine is inseparably connected with sport.
Hopes for national independence were deeply related to sport clubs. First sport
clubs appeared in Czech Republic and were called
Sokol .
At this time people were
concentrated on nurturing their native language and culture as well as physical fit¬
ness. The idea of national identity, started in Czech Republic, spread through the
entire Austria- Hungary Empire and eventually changed the history. Ukrainian stu¬
dents in Vienna became familiar with the new notions of freedom and in
1867
founded a sport association called
Sicz .
Association s Charter suggested everyday
exercises to keep physical strength and health. Still, it took a long time until the idea
of sport clubs became popular among the Ukrainians. There were few reasons for
that. First of all, the dominant role of Poles after the Austria-Hungary Empire col¬
lapsed. Secondly, lack of inteligentia among the Ukrainians. Finally, rural type of
the Ukrainian society.
In the period from
1897-1914
the Ukrainian society seemed to transform very
quickly. In
1914
during the
Zaporoski
Olympics an unprecedented number of

thousand athletes turned out. It is a good example of how the idea of sport became
popular among the Ukrainians.
In the late
XIX
century as well as at the beginning of the XX century a great
number of educational, political, cultural and sport clubs or associations developed.
Some of them were created strictly for young people e.g.
Prosvita ,
Ridna
Szkoła ,
Sokiľ, Plast ,
Sicz .
The whole idea of physical fitness among the Ukrainians is strictly connected with the
first sport club Soldi which was created in Lviv in
1894.
In
1909
Soldi and
Sicz ,
the
two biggest sport clubs, merged under one management. What is more, Boy Scouts club
Plast
and tourist club Plaj joined them before the First World War. After the war, in
1925,
sport club
Luh
became a part of the biggest club in Lviv as well. The first sport
associations were formed by sport groups created by students in Ukrainian gymnasiums.
The founding father of Ukrainian sport movement was
Iwan
Boberskyj a great activist
and proponent of the modern sports. Sport club
Sianowa Czajka
was created by the
male gymnasium in
Przemyśl.
The club had a wide offer of disciplines. Sport club Spar-
tanka was formed by the Female Institute in
Przemyśl.
The club was very successful as
it was widely known outside the city. The most successful were athletics and gymnastics
sections.
Wesela
Hromada
was the club founded by the Teachers College.

School curriculums were based upon patriotic and Christian values but they also
referred to Cossack tradition. At that time there were two main streams in Ukrai¬
nian organizations. One stream seemed to be nationalistic
( Sokiľ, Plast ),
while
another was more socialistic in character
( Sicz ,
Luh ).

During the interwar period many sport clubs such as: Berkut ,
Spartak , Lew
and famous Sian were created. As quickly as possible they entered into rivalry with
Jewish and Polish sport clubs. People saw it as a symbolic picture of competition,
when equal approaches equal. Moreover, some believed that Ukrainian clubs were
much better than Polish or Jewish. Sport became a way of bonding between people
of the same nation who were once separated. Sport events, especially football match¬
es, were of great importance as they strengthened national identity and suppressed
the process of polonization.

In the rural areas sport life flourished as well. The most famous and success¬
ful sport club was
Skala Mościska.
Still, there were other significant clubs such
as Weselka
Medyka,
UKS
Dobromil,
UKS Zaporozec Nizankowice , Karmeluk
Krowniki, Step Buszkowice, etc.
After the Boy Scouts movement was dissolved some social and sport associations
such as Kameniari , Widrodzennia ,
Towarzystwo Higieniczne,
Orly , KLK
were
created.

In theory, all of those organizations were apolitical, but the truth was they all had
a common goal to create an independent nation of Ukraine. Sport clubs had very
carefully prepared curriculums aiming at strengthening the national identity. In gen¬
eral, those curriculums consisted of regular exercises, organization of sport competi¬
tions and cultural events. The main aim was to increase the intellectual and physical
efficiency in the society.

Ukrainian press, in particular weekly Zmah , contributed to the popularity of
sport. Press was the important source of sport news as well as the main interpreter
of the rules.

At that time one of the serious problems was lack of physical education teachers
and coaches. Moreover, clubs had difficulties having almost no professionals and no
appropriate training grounds.

Press was also the voice speaking openly about Ukrainian independence which the
Polish government disapproved of.

Polish and Ukrainian national differences were transparent during the interwar
period. After
1925
Ukrainian sport isolated itself in the form of
Sokol- Baťka
the
Ukrainian Sport Association. It was only after
1928
that the first Ukrainian foot¬
ball club
Ukraina
Lwow
entered the Polish Football Association. In
1932
the new
law concerning changes in the structure and organization of sport clubs was passed.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs no sport club was allowed to exist under

old charters. Ukrainian sport clubs such as Sokil and
Luh
were in serious troubles.
Ukrainian paper Dilo tried to defend clubs:
...
we cannot forget about several
hundred clubs and our duty is to do whatever it takes to protect them.

Ukrainian
society was disillusioned by the new legislation, not only because the clubs were ille-
galized, but because it was not possible to create new clubs. It was due to the politics
and radicals in particular that Polish and Ukrainian sport organizations could not
come to terms.
The Ukrainian sport during its existence was strongly related to the struggle for
independence. Sport clubs strictly abode by their charters and at the same time took
painstaking care of Ukrainian language, history and tradition. In this manner it
seemed impossible for Ukrainian and Polish sport organizations to make an agree¬
ment. However, the root of the Polish and Ukrainian conflict lay in the Ukrainian
claims for independent state.
The period of the Second World War had a certain influence on the development
of sport. From September
1939
until June
1941
Przemyśl
was divided into two
separate administrative areas. Soviet government increased employment and created
sport clubs affiliated with factories. Among the most popular football, such sports
as volleyball, basketball, athletics, boxing and chess were introduced. Female sport
sections were created. Athletes from
Przemyśl
went into competition with sport
aficionados from the nearby villages of
Medyka, Krowniki,
Nizankowice,
Dobro¬
mil,
Klokowice, Pikulice,
Grochówce, Drozdowice,
etc. Communist propaganda
also encouraged young people to participate in sport competitions promising great
prizes.
Under the Nazi rules in Zasanie district some sport clubs like Czemyk , Kurini
Molodych , Robitnyczi Kurini Molodych ,
Služba Baťkiwszczyni , Sojuz Ukrai-
nok came into being. The above mentioned associations were formed in order to
unite young people of Ukrainian origin. Sport competitions and sport camps were
organized during that time.
Sport club UKS Sian was mainly associated with football. In April
1940
UKS
Sian played their first match against Grencszucu . The score was
7:1
in favour of
Sian . After many local victories the team played in the General Government Cup.
On the

5tK of December
1940
they lost
2:1
with Luftwafe SF in the cup final.
Despite their defeat Ukrainian team from
Przemyśl
was praised by many German
papers. In the springtime, during the tournament in Cracow, UKS Sian showed
excellent condition and defeated several important Polish clubs.
The most talented athlete at that time was
Mirosław
Turko.
After the encroachment of the Red Army in the
1944
all political, cultural and
sport activities in
Przemyśl
were brought to a standstill.
