AND ITS INHABITANTS
IN THE TIME OF THE
1905-1907
REVOLUTION
Summary
Kielce,
and the inhabitants of this of guberniya town, played a significant role
during the period of the
1905-1907
revolution in the scale of the whole Kingdom of
Poland. It was also not only a social revolution, but the subsequent national risings
against the Russian invader. Nonetheless, this problem has not found much space
in the hitherto literature.
Revolutionary events began in the town with the school strike, which burst
out on
3
February
1905
at
10
a.m. in both government female and male grammar
schools. Both Polish and Jewish students handed to the principals of schools peti¬
tions containing a number of demands, and mainly postulates of instruction of all
subjects in Polish, by Polish teachers, and then they went out of the schools to the
streets where they proclaimed a school strike. The Government elementary schools
also joined the strike. Besides, the strike was supported by workers and craftsmen,
and part of parents.

male students were expelled from
grammar schools for the participation in the strike.
Great demonstrations occurred in the summer of
1905,
when the first general
strike burst out in the history of
Kielce.
There were clashes with the army and police.
At first strikes and revolutionary events had a spontaneous character. Gradually, the
Polish Socialist Party
(PPS),
and after the split, The Polish Socialist Party Revolution¬
ary Fraction
(PPS
FR)
led this revolutionary movement. The combat units of this
party also organised armed actions, mainly against the czarist authorities and their
functionaries. Underground (guerrilla) warfare occurred in
Kielce
and in the
Kielce
guberniya, which resulted in numerous human losses. Other parties, particularly
nationalists and liberals, joined the political struggle.
The concessions of the czarist authorities, which were gained thanks to the
revolution, made possible the creation of many social (mostly cultural and educa¬
tional organisations in this period also in
Kielce.
They were, amongst others, the
Polish School Organisation
(Polska Macierz Szkolna),
the Association of Courses for
Illiterate Adults, the Scholarly Reading-Rooms Society, the first trade unions, which
also recruited people who were opponents of the armed combat with the invader.
But in spite of repressions after suppressing the revolution, its effects proved to be
most durable.
The inhabitants of
Kielce,
like the population of all the Kingdom, paid dearly for
the participation in the revolution. Many of them were killed in the armed combat
with czarism, others were sentenced by court martials to death, long hard labour or
deportation to Siberia from where many of them never returned.
