The present publication contains the presentations made during the all-Polish scholarly conference enti¬
tled Archaeology and the Challenges of the Modern World, which took place on
27
March
2008
in the Ar¬
chaeological Museum in
Poznań.
The aim of the meeting was to determine the place and the role of archaeol¬
ogy in the ever changing social space, the diagnosis of the current condition of this discipline and the analysis
of legal and organizational framework within which the archaeological studies have been conducted. The
conference brought together a large group of participants representing various fields of expertise and stem¬
ming from different public institutions and private firms. The co-organizers of the debate were: Archaeologi¬
cal Museum in
Poznań, Poznań
Society for the Advancement of the Arts and Sciences and Scholarly Associ¬
ation of Polish Archaeologists.
The publication contains six papers divided into two blocs. The first one commences with the article by
Zbigniew Kobyliński
devoted to the situation of Polish archaeology at the beginning of the 21st century in
which the author presents the opportunities and threats facing this discipline in the context of the new social
and political phenomena occurring in the contemporary Central Europe. The second article by
Alina
Jaszewska discusses an important question for the archaeologists of legal situation of archaeological studies,
paying special attention to the regulations concerning the protection of archaeological heritage. In two subse¬
quent articles,
Henryk Machajewski
and
Zofia Kurnatowska
introduce the achievements and failures of ar¬
chaeology with reference to specific historical periods
—
in the first article until the end of antiquity, in the
second until the early Middle Ages. Two papers make up the second bloc. In the first one
Dominik
Abtamowicz examines the issue of archaeological excavations conducted in the vicinity of the so-called big
investment projects, whereas in the second paper
Lidia Grzeszkiewicz-Kotlewska
writes about the problems
connected with the operation of private archaeological firms.
Both the first and the second group of papers is supplemented with the published texts of the participants
of the debate who expressed their opinions during the discussion. |
