WAS IT ONLY ROCK N ROLL?
MUSIC ALTERNATIVE
IN COMMUNIST CZECHOSLO¬
VAKIA
1956-1989
The existing publications dealing with rock music in Czech
academic milieu have been written mainly from the perspec¬
tive of musicology or sociology. The presented book is the
first attempt to analyse rock music from historical point of
view. The attention of its author,
Miroslav
Vaněk,
is in the
broadest sense focused on the impact popular music had
on three generations of Czechoslovak society. It deals with
the development of rock music since the year
1956
when
the expression „rock and roll was first used, up to
1989
which was marked by the end of the rule of the communist
regime. One of the author s main objectives is to find out
whether rock music had any political and mobilization
potential, which in combination with other factors, contri¬
buted to the fall of the regime. The author is also analysing
whether the regime politicized the music in any way or was
music „just one of the islands of freedom which helped
young people to cope with the practics of an authoritarian
regime.
The interpretation is drawn not only on the basis
of Czech and Czechoslovak history but also with respect to
the development of rock music in the USA and the UK. The
author explores the elements of activism and revolutionary
potential of rock music in the Anglo-Saxon environment,
especially in connection with racial, antiwar and social is¬
sues. The publication deals thorougly with all the impor¬
tant periods of Czechoslovak big beat and analyses the dif¬
ferent youth subcultures
-
rock n roll, hippies movement,
punk, underground and finally the new wave.
On the pages of this book you can also read about the re¬
gime s attempts to eradicate this so-called bourgeois and
decadent music, which had, according to the ex-communist
authorities, a dangerous potential of creating „ideological
diversion among the young people in the whole former East-
-Bloc. The publication presents these ideological attempts
of the regime to „direct the youth in the spirit of marxistic
ideology by means of propaganda which attacked both rock
musicians and their fans in each decade (e.g. hate article
New wave with old contents in the weekly
Tribuna).
The
author illustrates how two police organs (the National Se¬
curity, StB, and the Public Security, VB) dealt with modern
music and their fans. This aspect is shown through exam¬
ples of the most important police interventions against big
beat, such as the
„tancovačka
in
Mánes
in
1957,
the con¬
cert at railway station
Praha-střed
in the mid-sixties or the
concert of The Plastic People in
Rudolfov.
Furthermore, the
author also explores the channels through which modern
music found its way to Czech lands from western Europe.
He also analyses both official music magazines
[Melodie,
Gramorevue), as well as those independent and fanzines
issued during the
1980s.
Last but not least, the author eva¬
luates the role and the limits of independent music criti¬
cism and publicism in the era of repression.
The last chapter of the book is dedicated to an analysis of
contemporary issues in respect to rock music. Immediately
