A Chapter in Literary History
This book is the first attempt at a comprehensive and panoramic
survey of Romanian SF, from the earliest to the current products of the genre.
The first and larger part of the study looks into the SF proper, while the latter
examines the contribution of Romanian theory and criticism to the SF stock
of ideas and motifs.
The method is critical and historical. The author starts from the
assumption that, despite their specificity, SF texts have a trans-generic value
which entitles them to a place in the canon of high literature. He works with
firm value criteria, foremost among them being the aesthetic test, a necessary
test insofar as the genre has inspired a host of graphomaniacs. Another and,
of course, more important source has been the strong tradition of high
literature
-
serious authors who have succumbed to the mirage of science, to
the lure of political and Utopian fiction.
Chapter
1
explores the beginnings of Romanian SF, an incipient
genre which, seeking its way among some false pathways, now finds it in the
Utopian anticipation, its first productions dating back to the last quarter of the
19th century.
Chapter
2
deals with the pioneering works of such writers as Victor
Anestin and Henric
Stahl,
whose particular concern, at the turn of the century,
was the pleasant popularizing of scientific discoveries. Their astronomical
novels, or instructive cosmic journeys, bear the unmistakable stamp of Jules
Verne and H. G. Wells, but they also display a strong sense of participation in
the edifying of a new genre. A rather interesting experiment was I. C.
Vissarion s attempt to adapt folk literature to the special condition of SF. In
his fairy tales, the forces of good and evil are engaged in battle, aided by the
sophisticated weaponry imagined by science, thus generating the first
example of Romanian heroic fantasy.
The years between World War I and II produced a kind of SF which
was largely modelled on the recipes of sensational and exotic literature,
intensely cultivated at the time. It was an age of exalted projections of future
cataclysms, described with lyrical voluptousness, even in
epopeic
verses.
Among the host of mediocre writters, rather amusing than really interesting,
Felix Aderca is recognized as the author of the best SF novel of the age:
Sunken Cities, which marks the culmination of a dystopian adventure that is
the topic of Chapter
3.

4
appraises the contribution of those whom the author has
labelled the guests to SF, writers who established their reputations in other
genres (poetry, realistic fiction, fantastic literature, etc.) and who, at various
stages in their career and in certain portions of their work, tried their hand at
SF. hi their works, from Victor Eftimiu to
Cezar Petrescu,
from Tudor
Arghezi to Mircea Eliade, there are motifs which SF can rightly claim as
belonging to its own
ideatic
and thematic stock. Lacking a clear commitment
to the imperatives of the genre, this kind of Sunday anticipation or filler
was rather a profitable appendix to their professional concerns. If the earlier
SF productions has displayed bold ideas but a defective composition, the
guests texts produced tame ideas, wonderfully licked into shape.
Chapter
5
examines the SF of the 50s, a period which saw a
massive sacking of the popularizers of science in an official attempt to
brainwash the memory of the genre. The cultural upheavals operated by the
communist regime tended to place the Romanian SF in tow of the Soviet
model. The result was a series of technical experiments oriented towards
rediscovering the genre. The literary quality of the texts is lamentable.
However, in the mass of authors with ephemeral collaborations, especially to
the newly-edited Collection of Science Fiction Tales, I. M.
Ştefan
deserves
some attention through his tenacious but lustreless work.
Chapters
6
and
7
discuss the thematic and stylistic experiments of
the
70s,
which brought about a revival of the genre. The authors were
coming from various fields: journalists, prose writers, poets, playwrights.
Why so many men of letters turned to SF might be explained through the
general belief that SF was in a position to offer more freedom of creation than
the traditional genres, severely curtailed by harsh censorship. The main
protagonists of this wave of Romanian SF were Adrian
Rogoz, Sergiu
Fărcăşan,
Camil Baciu, Victor
Kernbach,
Mihu
Dragomir, Ion
Hobana,
George Anania, and Romulus
Bărbulescu.
Side by side, a group of lesser
writers were interpreting the same tune in a minor key.
Faced with a huge body of texts, this study has attempted to
systematize it according to some essential tonal coordinates. Chapter
8
focuses on the poetic coordinate

a defining quality of Romanian SF, as
evinced by the works of Mihnea Moisescu,
Georgina
Viorica Rogoz,
Mircea
Şerbănescu,
and particularly
Horia
Aramă
and Vladimir Colin. Colin

poetic
discourse^ for example, marks off the motifs of the genre, allowing them to
float in an exotic and mythological fantastic, of a very good quality. Chapter

discusses the comico-satirical dimension, ranging from refined humor to
burlesque frivolity. The works of

Gheorghe
Săsărman,
Mircea
Oprită,
etc.). Haunted by
projects of synthesis, they strive to work in several genres, thus coming in for
such labels as orchestra-man, total-anticipator, etc. Preoccupied with the
literariness of their texts, they deliberately expose themselves to generic
impurification
-
contamination with realistic, fantastic, and Utopian
discourses, retaining, however, a rigorous aesthetic discipline.
Chapter
11
speaks about the new wave of Romanian SF. This is
the generation that ocupied the stage of the
80s -

writers who have succeeded in extending the horizon of
the genre and revigorating its content. While the SF of the 50s was tied up
with the Soviet model and the middle generation attempted to invent an SF
with Romanian features, the representatives of the new wave have taken
over and adapted the American model.
This tendency becomes emphatic in the works analysed in Chapter
12.
Making its debut in the
80s,
postmodernist SF develops spectacularly in
the last decade
t
if the 20th century. The works of young writers testify to the
strong impact of American models in the genre, such as cyberpunk and
steampunk. A great number of these works are obviously paraliterary in
character, yet some of them are retrievable in terms of good literature, one
that has constantly changed its shape and mode as a result of the growing
pressure of mass culture. The early novels and stories of Michael
Haulică,
Liviu Radu,
Sebastian A. Corn,
Ona
Frantz, Florin
Pîtea, Cătălin Sandu,
Don
Simon, Andrei Valachi and others belong to this particular context, in their
attempts to adapt the Romanian SF to our contemporary taste.
Chapter
13 -
another ample sequence of the book
-
resumes the
series of guests in the postwar period. From Ion
Marin Sadoveanu
and
Geo
Bogza to the much younger Mircea Nedelciu and Mircea
Cărtărescu,
Romanian writers well established in the mainstream literature have kept on
making more or less random incursions into the SF field. Even though the
fruit of a passing interest, their SF works deserve attention through their
postmodern
reflexivity
and pictorial quality.
The later part of the volume examines the Romanian critical
contributions to the genre: an impressive amount of articles and studies,
scattered in various papers, literary magazines, reviews, or prefaces to
anthologies, besides books with a specialized content, collections of studies

and theoretical research work. Some of them can hardly be regarded as mere
recirculation
of established ideas, but rather original contributions, their
study highlighting an active and constantly remodelling sector, a very
interesting critical spectacle indeed.
Chapter
14
describes the beginning of SF exegesis, from the earliest
theoretical manifestoes (at the dawn of the 20th century) to the sentimental
and
propagandistic
criticism of the 50s and
60s.
The promoters of that
partisan critical direction were, of course, professional writers, from Anestin
and
Stahl
to Victor
Kernbach
and Vladimir Colin.
Chapter
15
discusses the opinions of theorists, historians, critics,
and professional essayists in either the world of academy or the circles of
literary magazines. From their encounter with a paradoxical genre there
have resulted memorable
pronunciamentos
on SF in general and Romanian
SF in particular. Silvian Iosifescu, Ovid S.
Crohmălniceanu,
Florin
Manolescu, as well as other academic critics, have approached SF from the
perspective of literary theory. Ion
Hobana
has contributed studies in literary
history. Voicu Bugariu, Anton Cosma,
Constantin Cubleşan
have focused on
textual criticism and the SF phenomenon. Dan Culcer has adopted the form
of free essay. Cornel
Robu
has shown an interest in both theory and practical
criticism. His idea of interpreting SF as a literature of the sublime has
enjoyed some international recognition.
Chapter
16
examines the more recent critical approaches. While
some critics are inclined to take the soft view, practising an ironic and
mildly humoristic commentary, others stake on more ambitious theoretical
projects
(Lucian Ionică),
develop an interest in the relationship between SF
and border genres such as
utopia (Sorin Antohi),
or apply a rigorous criticism
to the texts of their generation (Mihai
Coman,
Lucian-
Vasile
Szabo, Radu
Pavel Gheo). Some modern approaches to SF have been suggested from the
quarters of formalist grammar, structuralism and semiotics, as well as
computer science. All this proves that theoretical and critical debate around
this genre is as lively a phenomenon as the history of Romanian SF.
The book opens with a Preface which establishes the method and
objectives of the study, and ends with a chapter entitled Perspectives. The
balance sheet of the genre on Romanian soil shows that SF is now enjoying a
lot more dignity and cultural respectability. As for the future, the author is
confident: with its yet untapped resources, serene and tenacious, Romanian
SF keeps on running.

LA SCIENCE-FICTION ROUMAINE
Un chapitre d histoire littéraire
Ce livre est le premier ouvrage ample, de synthèse, dédié à la S-F
roumaine. Il traite ce sujet selon une vision panoramique, depuis les
premières manifestations du genre jusqu à nos jours. La partie la plus étendue
de l étude envisage, comme il est normal d ailleurs, l aspect créateur du
domaine, la fiction. Dans la deuxième partie on discute l exégèse roumaine
du genre, la contribution de la théorie et de la critique spécialisée à
l enrichissement du fonds des idées et des motifs sur la base desquels la S-F
affirme, non pas sans originalité, sa présence dans l espace contemporain.
La méthode que l auteur emploie dans cette étude est à la fois
critique et historique. Elle a pour objectif la valorisation intensive de la
production visée, mais d une perspective littéraire. L auteur part de
l hypothèse (d ailleurs vite confirmée) que, dans les créations du genre,
malgré tout ce qui leur est spécifique, il y a des valeurs que la littérature doit
admettre comme telles en se les appropriant. Rien ne peut être rejeté avec une
supériorité obtuse, avant d être connu. Par conséquent, le livre présente,
discute d une manière critique, rejette ou reprend la contribution des auteurs
roumains de S-F en fonction des critères de valeur précis, dont s individualise
celui esthétique. Une telle opération devient plus importante maintenant que
la simple naration, soit-elle spectaculaire, de l aventure du genre dans
l espace roumain.
Le test esthétique n exclut pas la révélation de la tonalité spécifique
de la S-F. Mais il est d autant plus nécessaire que le genre a le droit de
revendiquer, dans les lettres roumaines, une double racine: il ne part pas
seulement de la production paralittéraire de certains graphomanes velléitaires,
mais aussi des traditions indubitables de la littérature roumaine. Ces traditions
englobent, entre autres, un vrai „mirage de la science , de même qu une
fascination manifeste des fictions politiques et utopiques. C est ce qu on
établit dans le Chapitre
1,
réservé aux débuts de la S-F roumaine. En
cherchant timidement sa voie parmi plusieurs tendances fausses, cette fiction
s arrête pour le moment à la forme de l anticipation utopique, tout en nous
permettant d en enregistrer les premières réalisations, dans le
demier
quart du
XIXème siècle.
Le Chapitre
2
présent l œuvre de quelques auteurs comme Victor
Anestin et Henric
Stahl, des
pionniers du genre. Durant les premiers années

du XXeme siècle, ils ont publié des romans à la manière de Jules Verne et H.
G. Wells. Leur écrits accordent un intérêt à part à l idée de vulgariser, d une
façon agréable, des informations du domaine scientifique. Ce sont, en
particulier, des „romans astronomiques ; autrement dit, des voyages
cosmiques instructifs, rédigés avec le sentiment de participer à l édification
d un genre nouveau. Une expérience en quelque sort particulière est la

d adapter la littérature populaire au régime spécial
de la S-F. Dans ses contes, les forces du bien et celles du mal s affrontent
avec l armement sophistiqué que la science peut imaginer, en générant ainsi
le premier exemple de
„heroic fantasy
à la roumaine.
Les années de l entre-deux-guerres ont fourni des œuvres de S-F
produites selon les recettes de la littérature de sensation, d un exotisme facile,
intensément cultivées à l époque. C est l étape de l exaltation des
cataclysmes futurs, décrits avec volupté lyrique, parfois même en vers
d épopée. Du nombre des auteurs médiocres, plutôt amusants que dignes
d un réel intérêt, s impose
Felix Aderca.
Il est un écrivain véritable, l auteur
du meilleur roman de S-F de la première moitié du XXeme siècle: Les Villes
submergées.
Aves
ce livre qu on ne renie pas même de nos jours, la S-F
roumaine connaît l apogée d une aventure distopique à laquelle le Chapitre
3
dédie pour la plupart son analyse.
Le Chapitre
4
débat, pour la même période, la contribution des
„hôtes du genre . Il s agit des écrivains consacrés dans d autres domaines de
la littérature (la poésie, le roman réaliste, le conte fantastique, etc.) qui, à
certains moments de leur activité, cultivent „d aventure la S-F. À partir de
Victor Eftimiu et
Tudor Arghezi
jusqu à
Cezar Petrescu
et Mircea Eliade, on
trouve, dans leur création ample, diverse et complexe, parsemées des motifs
propres au fonds thématique et idéatiques de la S-F. Sans avoir la „conscience
du genre , cette création est une sorte d anticipation „de dimanche ,
ornamentale,
qui s ajoute profitablement aux recherches spéciales du domain.
Si généralement on pouvait parler d idées hardies mais mal réalisées sur le
plan littéraire, dans le cas des „hôtes on a à faire à des idées plus
„tempérées , mais développées à l aide des moyens artistiques remarquables.
Dans le Chapitre
5
on traite, comme un moment à part, la S-F des
années
50.
La période est caractérisée par un „débarquement massif des
auteurs spécialisés dans la vulgarisation scientifique. Ce processus se produit
sur la base d un accident amnésique qui efface de la mémoire du genre les
gains plus anciens. Les bouleversements culturels opérés par le régime
communiste tentaient de placer le S-F roumaine à la remorque du modèle
soviétique. Le résultat en est l implantation d une expérience éminemment

„techniciste , orientée vers la réinvention du genre. Dans cet effort prémédité,
l aspect littéraire des écritures se trouve en grand souffrance. D une masse

comme d une „renaissance du genre , sous aspect thématique et stylistique.
Les auteurs qui soutiennent ce processus constituent une vague d écrivains
appartenants à d autres zone de l écrit professionnel: des journalistes, des
prosateurs, des poètes, des dramaturges qui s orientent vers la S-F.
L explication de cette migration massive des hommes de lettre doit être
cherchée dans leur conviction que la S-F pouvait offrir une plus grande
liberté de création que les domains traditionnels de la littérature, limitées à
l époque par des rigueurs de plus en plus sévères de la censure politique. On

Puisque le matériel d étude commence à devenir abondant, le livre
se voit obligé de l organiser dans le sens des principales tendances qui

préoccupée par son aspect littéraire. Elle traverse une expérience de
„l impurification générique, tout en se mêlant délibérément aux éléments
réalistes, fantastiques, utopiques, bien contrôlés et soumis souvent à une
discipline esthétique rigoureuse.

roumaine. Il s agit de la génération des années

etc.) qui a réussi, à son tour, à élargir l horizon du genre et à en
renouveler une fois de plus le contenu. Si pendant les années
50
c était le
modèle soviétique qu on imposait au genre, si la „génération moyenne
s efforçait d inventer une S-F avec des caractéristiques „roumaines , la
nouvelle vague prend le modèle américain, tout en l adaptant. Les plus
remarquables représentants de cette période réussissent non seulement à
l assimiler, mais aussi à l employer d une façon créatrice sans risquer de voir
s anéantir leur propre
personalitě.
Cette tendance devient plus évidente dans les textes que l auteur
analyse dans le Chapitre
12.
L expérience postmoderne présente dans la
science-fiction roumaine à partir de
1980
a été continuée d une façon
spectaculaire pendant la dernière décennie du XXeme siècle. Des tendances en
vogue dans l espace américain du genre, comme
cyberpunk
et steampunk, ont
influencé l écriture des jeunes écrivains. Bien qu une bonne partie de ces
écrites aient un fort caractère paralittéraire, certains œuvres peuvent encore
être récupérées par la littérature, à condition que celle-ci change elle aussi
sous l influence toujour plus manifeste de la culture de masse.

et d autres créent leurs premiers romans
et recueils de contes dans ce contexte littéraire particulier tout en s évertuant
à assurer à la S-F roumaine l aspect d une œuvre vivante, parfaitement
adaptée aux
gouts
de notre époque.
Une autre séquence ample du livre (le Chapitre
13)
réprend la
discussion des „hôtes de la S-F, en considérant leur production de l après-
guerre. À partir de Ion Marin Sadoveanu et Geo Bogza jusqu aux plus jeunes
Mircea Nedelciu et Mircea
Cărtărescu,
des écrivains roumains qui se sont
consacrés à d autres formes de littérature
(„main stream )
continuent à faire
des incursions plus ou moins occasionnelles dans le domaine de la S-F.

Résultat d un intérêt passager accordé au genre, ces incursions l enrichissent
et méritent d être connues.
La deuxième partie du volume fait passer par un filtre critique les
commentaires sur la S-F accumulés au long du temps dans l espace roumain:
une quantité impressionnante d articles et d études diffusés dans de divers
journaux, revues littéraires,
fanzines,
ou bien publiés sous forme de préface à
des anthologies, auxquels on ajoute quelques livres à contenu spécialisé, des
recueils d études historico-littéraires et des recherches à caractère théorique.
Comme pour la plupart ces matériaux ne se limitent pas à faire récirculer des
idées „consacrées concernant le genre mais ont aussi l ambition d avoir une
contribution propre à ce domaine, leur étude met en évidence l existence d un
secteur actif, sujet à un renouvellement continuel. Un spectacle critique
particulièrement intéressant.
Le Chapitre

décrit l aspect plus ancien de l exégèse de la S-F,
depuis ses premières manifestations à caractère théorique, formulées au début
du XXeme siècle, jusqu à la critique sentimentale et propagandiste des années
50 - 60.
Certes, ce sont toujours les écrivains spécialisés à partir de Anestin
et H.
Stahl
jusqu à
Kernbach et
Vladimir Colin qui soutiennent un telle
direction partisane de la critique.
Dans le Chapitre

on discute les opinions des théoriciens,
historiens, critiques et essayistes de profession, soit des universitaires, soit
activant dans les rédactions des revues littéraires. De leur rencontre avec un
„genre paradoxal sont sorties, maintes fois, des images mémorables de la S-
F en général et de la S-F roumaine comme domaine particulier de référence.

Florin Manolescu et quelques
autres spécialistes des universités entament le sujet du point de vue de la
théorie littéraire et s avèrent, en conséquence, être préoccupés par les aspects
théoriques de la S-F. Sans ignorer ces problèmes, Ion
Hobana
se remarque
dans l étude de l histoire littéraire. Voicu Bugariu, Anton Cosma, Constantin
Cubleşan
ont surtout en vue une critique des textes et du phénomène S-F,
alors que Dan Culcer manifeste son option pour l essai libre, bâti avec
souplesse sur les suggestions du genre. Comel
Robu,
qui situe sa recherche
entre la méthode critique et celle théorique, a joui d un accueil international
mérité, par son idée d interpréter la S-F comme une littérature du sublime.

explore les tendances récentes de l exégèse du
genre. Celles-ci ont leur origines surtout dans le fandom, présentant ainsi
chez certains auteurs un aspect accusé de causerie ironique, mais pleine de
charme et d humour. En revanche, d autres auteurs se lancent, munis du
courage d affronter les risques, dans la construction théorique
(Lucian

de l intérêt à la relation de la S-F avec les genres connexes
comme par exemple avec l utopie
(Sorin Antohi);
ou bien ils font une
incisive critique des textes sur les matériaux offerts par leur génération
(Mihai
Coman,
Lucian-
Vasile Szabo,
Radu Pavel
Gheo). Il y a aussi des
investigations modernes du domaine de la S-F trouvées sous le signe des
grammaires formelles, du structuralisme et de la sémiotique, de même qu il y
a certaines tentatives de systématisation du domaine par des techniques
d ordinateur. Tout cela prouve que, si l histoire des écrits proprement dits de
la S-F roumaine est une procesus captivant, le panorama des commentaires
critiques et théoriques n est pas moins passionant.
Commençant par une Préface qui fixe les objectifs et la méthode de
l étude, le livre a pour fin un chapitre intitulé Perspectives. Le bilan du genre,
dans l espace roumain, indique que la S-F vit aujourd hui un moment de
dignité culturelle. Vu cet aspect actuel, l auteur exprime sa confiance dans
l avenir du domaine: sans avoir encore épuisé ses
resources,
la S-F roumaine
continue sa course, seraine et tenace.
