he title of the book indicates that
the content mainly focuses on specific historical processes, which have
produced contemporary societies through complex interferences. These
processes were also present in the provincial areas of Central Europe,
yet they appeared later and differed considerably from those of Atlantic
Europe and were marked by different outcomes with regards to their
concrete social constitutions, cultural forms and mentalities of the 19lh
century,

texts in the book are a part of the results of more than
a decade

worth of research on the evolution of mental patterns em¬
bodied in individual class, politics and ethnically-defined cultures of
the so-called long 19lh century in the European and Central European
milieu, as well as of the interpretative procedures, i.e. the strategies of
historiography, social sciences and ideologies which serve to re-actualise
and functionalise the past throughout various periods, including the
present one. The main focus of the text is to shed light on the relations
between past situations and both their subsequent and current interpre¬
tations which are both selective and changing.

witnessed the start of changes which led to the epochal discontinuity ,
the shadow of which we continue to live under; the Enlightenment,
with the revolution and its ensuing consequences otherwise known
as the Restoration, the volume and depth of which has not yet been
measured in certain European environments, particularly not from the
perspective of everyday life and the lifestyles of the masses. This pe¬
riod represents the moment in European history in which social optics
changed radically, yet differently, depending upon the region.
The author privileges the history of the area in which he lives, not
in order to create an illusion of permanent tendencies or a continuity,
which would connect
-
from within
-
the various phases of one entity,
and of its superiority, but due to the faulty or tailored (tendentious) re¬
search in this field which prevents us from placing past events into the
real frames of European historical processes and understanding them
within their regimes of historicity .
Initially, the author situates the research and cognitive approaches
within the epistemological possibilities of contemporary social sciences
and humanities. In this context, he also makes some observations about
his immediate intellectual environment and presents the parameters
around which his work is structured. This is the research of historical
social and cultural processes which present the basis for the formation
of various interpretations and uses of the past, both in order to explain
current events and to legitimise the actions of various social agents,
especially in the Central European (Slovenophone) environment, but
using systematic historical and synchronous contextualisations.
He then looks at the construction of retrospective teleologies and le-
gitimizarion serials which make up the diverse, exclusive conceptions of
society from the Austrian Empire in the 19th century and the beginning
of the 20th century, up to various present-day nationalisms and nation
states which arose after the end of the double monarchy. This chap¬
ter presents the typology of nationalisms as it evolved after the French
Revolution in different parts of Europe (from where individual types
and their specific implications and consequences were exported into
the peripheral European and non-European environments, and where
they constituted an even wider range of political and cultural-ideologi¬
cal amalgams). It focuses primarily on the regions which were then
provinces of Lower Austria, and their filtered communication with the
European environment.

Summary
The main body of the text is dedicated to the events of the pre-
March period, which was characterised by the monarchic revenge on
the Enlightenment as well as by the formation of nationalism in the so
called peoples without state (and history), from which some impor¬
tant features of these nationalisms derive and can be recognised even
today. The author analyses certain characteristic developments, defines
the structuring axes of the historical situation, outlines the functional
ideological roles of the key players (personalities and institutions) and
records their (subsequent) consequences.
The author deals with the permanent ideological concerns, particu¬
larly those of the 19th century, and the modelling and the uses of this
continuation into the opposition to ideas, cultural and political con¬
frontations, arrangements and legitimising argumentation. Origo
gentis
was not a political concept in itself, neither was it completely new, but
it nevertheless represented a useful tool in the inter-ethnic and social
confrontations of the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the
20th century. What is particularly interesting about this concept is that
its extremely intense exploitation of individual political conjunctures
or ideological formations were not held back by the weakness or even
inexistence
of the relation between its long gone social and cultural re¬
ality and its use in the period discussed, as well as later on. Obviously,
this use is also an indication of the character of these conjunctures and
formations.
An extensive portion of the texts is concerned with the construc¬
tion, transformation, abandonment and enforcement of the so called
constitutive elements of the territorial and ethnic (national and pro-
to-national) societies of that period. Again, special emphasis is placed
on the Central European region. The majority of the criteria defining
languages and their origins, current homelands and hypothetical origi¬
nal homelands, generic ancestors and eradicated predecessors, present,
former and foreign religions lead to political exclusiveness and to con-
flictual relations in the areas where non-exclusive or at least less exclu¬
sive territorial societies were present in the past.
The author also studies the ideological aspect of historicity which
allegedly represents the grounds for the legitimacy of the existing states
and the subordination of some ethnic groups. The operational power
and the utterly illusive and irrational character of this criterion are in¬
dicated in the text. Historicity reduces history to the history of state
administrations and events crucial to them. In short, being the extract

historicism of the 19th century, it excludes the actual social
processes, which bring about the state and permit the events, as these
would dissolve the power over the past which was concentrated
-
by
means of historical patterns
-
in the hands of the agents of social power.
Still, social power and the reality of the past are not two elements of
the same order.
The text also considers the construction of an ethnic identity among
Slovenes according to the model, which was taken more spontaneously
rhan consciously or deliberately, from the German Romantic move¬
ment which constructs the community of a people or a nation through
the exclusion of others (normally a combination of linguistic, cultural,
religious and ethnic exclusion). This construction of identity does not
accommodate cultural activities and accommodates points of view or
autonomies even less. It is a form of a mental hornogenisation,

which limits the cultural and mental horizon to so called
nationally constitutive activities. Those arts and humanities which are
perceived differently continue to be questionable within the cultural
environment which holds such a tradition. Anti-Semitism in Slovenia
as seen in this context, for instance, can no longer appear to be an in¬
significant imitation of the Austrian
milieu in a
country with no Jews,
but as a structural urgency of a specific type of nationalism prevailing
within the atmosphere of Central Europe to such an extent that any
other type is practically unimaginable.
The author analyses the implantation of genealogical nationalism
in the Slovenophone environment and the struggle of the authorities,
their institutions and the dependent writers who counter the actual or
alleged tendencies of the Enlightenment, which could have endangered
the planned and progressing homogenisation. The roles of particu¬
lar individuals throughout these procedures, which the author treats
within a reconstructed historical context (and not within the line of
a hypothetical self-development of nationality), testify to ideological
forces pervading the social sphere in the southern provinces of Austria.
Constant purges

essentially with the same goal but not continuously
with the same criteria

are characteristic of national cultures shaped
within the processes of national identifications which were controlled
and led by various authorities.
Finally, the author looks at the one-way evolution projection into
the pre-March period as the time of retribution over the gains made by
the Enlightenment. This projection puts in place a vector illusion and

functionalises the past in relation to the current political concerns for
power, naturally to the detriment of reality and the real value of history
as a science. The author researches the mechanisms for censuring the
pst,
as well as the oblivion and deletion of the unfounded attributions
and appropriations which require falsification or biased selective read¬
ings of the documents of the past.

dal punto di vista della vita quotidiana e dallo stile di vita di massa, è
stato un momento nella storia d Europa, nel quale si sono radicalmente
trasformate, differenziandosi, comunque, da regione a regione, le otti¬
che sociali.
L autore privilegia la storia dello spazio nel quale vive, non però,
perché vorrebbe creare l illusione di tendenze durature, di una conti¬
nuità, che dall interno dovrebbe collegare le differenti tappe di un en¬
tità, della sua superiorità, ma perché il carente

denzioso) stato delle ricerche attuali non offre la possibilità di porre gli
avvenimenti passati nelle reali cornici dei processi storici europei e di
capirli all interno dei loro regimi di storicità .
All inizio collocagli approcci conoscitivi e di ricerca all interno delle
possibilità epistemologìche che oggi hanno le scienze sociali e umanisti-
che: qui formula alcune osservazioni sul suo immediato ambiente intel¬
lettuale, presenta

Questi sono, lo studio dei processi storici, sociali e culturali, attraverso

legittimazione delle attività di diversi agenti sociali soprattutto nello
spazio centroeuropeo (slovenofono), mediante però contestualizzazioni

In seguito parla della costruzione di teleologie retrospettive e di nes¬
si legittimativi che costituiscono diverse ed esclusive concezioni della
società dall Impero austriaco nel

la tipologia dei nazionalismi, come si è sviluppata dopo la rivoluzione

nicazione con l ambiente europeo.
Il grosso del testo è dedicato agli avvenimenti del

periodo della resa dei conti monarchica con l illuminismo e allo stes-

so tempo deli elaborazione dei nazionalismi dei cosiddetti popoli senza
stato (e storia), dal quale emergono alcune importanti caratteristiche di
tali nazionalismi, che sono riconoscibili
ancor
oggi. L autore analizza al¬
cuni avvenimenti peculiari, determina le assi strutturanti della situazio¬
ne storica, descrive

ruoli ideologicamente funzionali dei protagonisti
principali (personalità e istituzioni) ed evidenzia le loro conseguenze in

Parla delle durature preoccupazioni ìdeologìche soprattutto nel

secolo, della modulazione e dell uso di questa durata negli scontri ideo¬
logici, culturali e politici, negli assetti e nelle argomentazioni legitti¬

neanche del tutto nuovo, però sì propone come strumento negli scontri
interetnici e sociali della seconda metà del

passata realtà sociale e culturale e il suo uso nel periodo citato e più
tardi, è molto
fragüe o
anche inesistente, ma questo non rappresentò un
ostacolo per un suo intensivo sfruttamento in determinate congiunture
politiche

presso singole formazioni ideologiche. Questo uso è ovvia¬
mente anche un indicatore che mostra la natura di tali congiunture e
formazioni.
Gran parte del cesto è dedicata alla costruzione, aita trasformazione,
all abbandono e affermazione dei cosiddetti elementi costitutivi delle
società territoriali ed etnìche (nazionali e protonazionali) nel periodo
trattato. Particolare attenzione viene nuovamente data alla regione cen¬
trale dell Europa. La maggior parte dei criteri, quali sono le lingue e le
loro fonti, l attuale patria e l ipotetica patria arcaica, gli avi generici e

predecessori che

L autore tratta anche il criterio ideologico di storicità, che fungerebbe

legittimità degli staci esistenti e alla sottomissione di alcuni
gruppi etnici. È rappresentata anche la forza operazionale e contem¬
poraneamente la totale illusorìetà e irrazionalità dì questo criterio. La
storia, come cale, in base a questo criterio è riciocta a scoria ¿die ammi¬
nistrazioni statali, agli avvenimenti importanti per esse, vale a dire a un
riassunto dello storicismo tedesco del
XIX
secolo, mentre gli effettivi
processi nelle societl che sostengono gii stati e rendono possìbili gli av¬
venimenti, in tale storiografia semplicemente non partecipano, perché

con loro si disperderebbe il potere sul passato, che attraverso schemi
storicistici si concentra nelle mani dei portatori del potere sociale. Il
potere sociale e la verità del passato non sono comunque fattori dello
stesso ordine.
Nel testo si parla anche della costruzione dell identità etnica pres¬
so gli Sloveni sul modello, preso, più spontaneamente del voluto e co¬
scientemente dall ambiente romantico tedesco, che costruisce una
comunità di uomini
о
popoli attraverso l eliminazione (il più delle volte
in una combinazione di fattori linguistici, culturali, religiosi, razziali)
degli altri. In questa costruzione non c è spazio per le attività culturali
e
ancor
meno per le posizioni e le autonomie. Sì tratta di un tipo di
omogeneizzazione mentale,
Gleichschaltung,
che limita l orizzonte cul¬
turale e mentale sulle cosiddette attività di costruzione nazionale. In
ambienti con tale tradizione, una diversa concezione
delľarte
e delle
scienze umanistiche è
ancor
oggi problematica. In tale contesto, per
esempio,
ľantisemitismo
presso

letterati sloveni non si mostra più co¬
me un inlnfluente imitazione dell ambiente austriaco, in un paese nel
quale non ci sono ebrei, ma come una necessità strutturale di un par¬
ticolare tipo di nazionalismo, che però negli ambienti centroeuropei
domina fino a tal punto che risulta inconcepibile poter neanche imma¬
ginarne uno diverso.

che si sono formate in processi d identificazione nazionale, controllati e
diretti da differenti autorità.

periodo di regolamento dì conti con le conquiste dell illuminismo. Tale
proiezione costituisce l illusione vettoriale e funzionalizza il passato in
rapporto alle attuali preoccupazioni politiche

certamente alla realtà e al valore di verità della storia come scienza.
