Summary
The authors of the presented publication have attempted to present
a complex analysis of the events that took place in Slovakia in
1968,
which
fully respects the state- (Czechoslovak Socialist Republic at that time), in¬
ternational- and interdisciplinary dimension.
In the first part of this book, titled Czechoslovakia and Slovakia in
1968
-
socialism, policy and economics, the authors deal at first with the politi¬
cal and economic development in Czechoslovakia with special focus on
Slovakia during the so-called pre-spring
(1963 -1967),
cause January
1968
and the process of democratization that followed didn t came like a bolt
from the blue , since, taking into account various relevant aspects, these
events were rather a more intensive continuation of the antecedent period.
After a short description of the so-called pre-spring, the book is further
focused on the political development taking place in Czechoslovakia in
1968,
with all its peripeteias and both Czech and Slovak specifics, such
as the understanding of democracy in the process of political and social
reforms, the economic policy of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia
and the socialist state, as well as the aspiration of the reformists to put
into effect, in new circumstances of
1968,
a courageous model of the eco¬
nomic reform as it was conceived in
1965.
Furthermore, the authors of
this publication pay attention to issues such as the development of social
organisations and associations founded in
1968
apart of the official Na¬
tional Front. Also analysed is the development taking place within the
Catholic Church and its hierarchy, which is an aspect of extraordinary im¬
portance from the Slovak point of view, since it was a sphere, where the
activities of civic society were considerably more developed than in the
Czech Lands. Further, the book focuses on activities of Hungarian minor¬
ity living in Slovakia, the preparatory works for the constitutional law of
the Czechoslovak Federation, the situation of national minorities living
in Czechoslovakia, etc. In the conclusion of this part of the publication
attention is being paid to various issues such as the Czechoslovak victims
murdered during the occupation of the country in August
1968,
the mas¬
sive civic resistance against the occupation by the Warsaw Pact armies, the
political and personable development of

who was going
through a significant changeover from a pragmatic reformist into a first

man of Normalisation . Also reflected are the contemporary reflexions
of the Czechoslovak Spring, as they evolved within the community of the
Czech and Slovak exile.
Second part of the publication titled Year
1968
in international context
deals with the military-political context of the events taking place in
1968
in Czechoslovakia, above all with the military-political causalities of the
military intervention of the Warsaw Pact troops in Czechoslovakia and the
preparations taken before the occupation. Attention has been paid to the
Czechoslovak-Hungarian, the Czechoslovak-British and the Czechoslo¬
vak-Finnish relations in this period, further to the reactions of the Socialist
Unity Party of Germany
(SED)
and the public in Western Germany to the
developments in Czechoslovakia in the summer of
1968
and, last but not
least, to various forms of economic cooperation between the socialist con¬
cerns in Slovakia with the free-market economy countries.
The last thematic bloc of this book Slovakia in
1968 -
society and cul¬
ture can be considered as proof of the authors effectual effort to publish a
book of multidisriplinary character covering both the inner political and
the international context. Aside from the chapter dedicated to the com¬
plex cultural development in Slovakia in
1968,
the presented publications
contains articles of Slovak theatrologists, international literary historians,
philosophers and ethnologists dealing with distinct aspects, such as the
evolution of the theatre and the opera in Slovakia in
1968,
the activities of
Czech and Slovak writers, the attitude of famous Slovak author
Ladislav
Mňačko
in
1968,
the history of Structuralism and non-Marxist philosophy
in the 1960 s and 1970 s, the reflexions of the events of
1968
by the then
younger generation forty years after. This bloc is concluded by a chapter
dealing with historiography and its achievements concerning the events
of
1968.
