SUMMARY
Within the last decade of archaeological investigations in the area of the
Vorskla low flow, there has been encircled a core of sites referred to the Romny
culture, which includes ancient settlements in nowadays Poltava, Sanjary (both
Old and New), Mykhaylivka, and some ancient settlements on the Vorskla left
bank. The concentration of the sites of Romny culture in the low flow of the river,
on the late stage of Northern Slavs' (Sever'any) social development, not merely
demonstrates the territorial structure peculiarities of the tribal organisation, but
it also displays disposition in the area one of 'little' tribes, which was a part of
a larger tribal association
—
a union of eastern Northern Slavs, who inhabited
basins of the
Sula, Psel,
Vorskla and, possibly, of the
Severný
Donets.
The fact that there was a large sizeable trading quarter, including two
settlements in area of about
45
hectares (Old Poltava or Ivan hill, Institute hill),
most probably displays that the Poltava settlement of the Romny culture was the
basic economic centre in the Vorskla low flow micro-region. While the Vorskla
area came to be a part of the Old Russian state, the life on the both of the Poltava
hills was going on. In
XII
cent., Poltava settlement, mentioned in chronicles
under the name of Ltava, obviously, kept its importance as an administrative
centre of the State power on the ultimate border of the Pereyaslav principality.
This tradition was not broken in the post-mogul time either. It continued as well
even in Cossack epoch, while the regimental town of Poltava had most sizeable
settlement among all of the administrative centres on area of the Dnieper left
bank.
Special feature of the Romny culture settlement in Poltava, from one hand,
was its border position on the frontier with possessions of the Khazarian Empire
(khaganate), and from the other
-
its entirely deep connection with all centres
of the Northern Slavs land in whole. At the turn of the X-XI cent., after coming
here of some people groups from area of
Sejm
and the Psel high flow, as well as
after decay of the Khazarian Khaganate, this settlement turned into 'an early
urban centre' like those, which arose in the high flow areas of Psel and Vorskla.

quite up to date. The significance of the study increases if considered extremely
close location of the settlement to the 'Wild field', and its constant collisions with
nomads.
Opportunity to examine the Slavic-Russian remains in Poltava yet again
came on occasion of reconstruction of some parts, situated at the historical
downtown and occupied with one storey living buildings
XIX -
early XX cent.
Especially rich for such activities was the year
2007,
while the excavations were
made on seven parts of the ancient trade quarter.
The subject of the study, proposed to the reader, is archaeological objects,
discovered during the saving works on a part of the Poltava settlement
—
on
plateau of the Institute hill, right against the main entrance into Park Peremoghy
(the Park of Victory), and nearby the church of
"Vira, Nadia ta
Lubov"
("Faith,
Hope and Love").
The aim of the work is not only to put the received materials into scientific
circulation, but also the cultural and chronological attribution of the finds,
discovered during the examinations, reconstruction of certain, better preserved
living buildings of the Slavic-Russian epoch, as well as informing specialists
and the public about the examinations results of remains of the 'New town'
fortifications

be interesting on occasion of

1709.
Thus, in late autumn
2007,
the Poltava unit of the Preserving archaeological
expedition of the Centre for Preservance and Study of Archaeological Sites of
the Department of Culture of the Poltava State Regional Administration has
continued the examinations of the ancient trade quarter of the Ltava on the
Institute hill, in the North-Western part of the Poltava downtown, where lie
cultural depositions of the late Romny and Old-Russian time, some separate
objects Post-Mogul epoch and the final of the late Ukrainian middleages.
Site, chosen to erect the Centre for support of the talented children, on
Pervomaysky
Prospekt
21,
has a good location in the historical downtown,
above the slope of the indigenous (root) Vorskla bank and the Mazurovsky ravin,
right upon the urban landscape dominant
-
Institute hill. It is situated in
480
m
toward the South-West
-
toward the South from the digs of
1997-1998,
on site
had some time before occupied with line of houses of odd numeration, in
80-90
m
from slope of the right bank of the brook Ltava (Poltavka), which run through
the Mazurovsky ravin (it is the right tributary of Vorskla). In whole, it is a part
of plateau of the right root Vorskla bank, limited from the East and from the
Northern-East with vale of the brook, and with remains of a little old incline of
the Cossack time, by the building of the refectory of the Yuri Kondratuk National
Technical University. The incline led to a pond
—

topographie situation
of this location, for the early
XVIII
cent., is
fixed in acts, papers and on plan by Ivan Bishev
1722.
The site is also situated
against (through the ravine) the site of the ancient trade quarter of the Ltava on
the Ivan (Old Poltava) hill.
The preserving archaeological activities resulted receipt of quite valuable
historical and archaeological data on occupation of the Institute hill in Poltava,
within the limits of, so called, 'far' suburb of the town fortress XVII-XVIH
cent.
It may be considered to be documented the fact that the territory was used
since the early Scythian time
-
VII-VI B.C., what is proved with finds of clay
pottery in number of examined objects of the different time. Probably, the
settlement of the Scythian time was adjacent to the slopes of St. Nicola's and
Mazurovsky ravines, prolonging in such way zone of the old settlement on the
Ivan hill.
It was expected that on the side had to be discovered the materials of the late
Romny archaeological culture, connected with a large settlement on Institute
hill, dated back to the time of the Northern Slaves' pre-state union
—
trade
quarter of the Ltava. Ceramics and other materials of the Romny culture were
found throughout all the examined area. These finds encircle zone of sites,
household buildings, etc., adjoining to the settlement. Discovery of two rows
of living buildings remains, along the slope above the Manzurovsky ravine,
gave much more than it had been expected. On institute hill, the excavations
witness the existence of dense late Romny culture living building, at least, more
congested towards the Mazurovsky ravine.
A bit unexpected for Poltava cultural depositions is the discovery of remains
of Old Russian building XI cent., almost through all of nowadays construction
area, which are in a quite good condition. As it is known, remains of objects XI
cent., on territory of Poltava, in general, preserved quite unwell. Therefore, the
fact of discovery of the household remains is an important prove of the life on the
Poltava settlement between the early XI and
XII
cent. Presence on the objects
marks of fire arise a question about study on complicated historical situation on
area adjacent the borders of the Old Russian land in XI cent.
The presence of
XII
century materials proves the right of the suppositions
that have already been stated before
-
concerning the belonging of this part of
the landscape dominant (above the slope of the Institute hill) to the area of the
trade quarter and settlement of Ltava, mentioned in chronicles, while it was a
part of the Pereyaslav principality. In addition, the discovery of materials and
objects of second half
XIII -
XlVcenturies witness constant development of the
settlement since the epoch of the feudal discords of the Russia up to the time of
the Vorskla battle
1399.

Quite expressive materials have been received in course of the archaeological
study of the objects dated back to the Cossacks time and the Modern. First,
it has been localised the place of rampart and moat of Poltava fortress suburb
in early
XVIII
cent., along the Pervomaysky Prospect, proved their existence,
maintenance, levelling and its covering up in the late
XVIII -
early
XIX
cent.
Secondly, it was detected the location of a capital house XVIII-XIX cent., with
a vault, represented on G.Stahdler's engraving. It was proved the fact that the
part of the fortress catacomb system of Cossacks time was used as cellars in
XIX
cent. By the way, it has also received data concerning the use of rampart massif
for burials on complicated stages of the city history early
XVIII
cent. Thirdly,
found some new proves of the military activities in the fortress suburb, during the
defence of Poltava
1709.
In conclusion it should be said that in course of the study has been received
an expressive collection of finds, some of which are quite significant, and also
pieces of unbroken forms of pottery of the Romny and Old Russian time, which
substantially enriched collections of the Poltava State Museum of Local History.
The results have once again proved the appropriateness of preservation the
Poltava cultural deposition of the passed epochs under remnants of the regiment
fortress ramparts and parts of the old building XIX-XX cent.
