adam_text | SYNOPSIS
The cultural identification of the Old Bulgarians is
a key question in the arrangement of the historical background of the mat¬
ter. It is directly related to also determining their starting genetic belong¬
ing.
The Bulgarian world came into being in the Caucasus with a stated
identity of Bulgarians. This means that its early migration chronologically
referred to the manifestation of the origin that had already come into be¬
ing. The movement of the Bulgarian origin westwards was not an occa¬
sion of emergence, but an internal event within the frameworks of the
Bulgarians self-identification.
A number of names from the living environment of the Bulgarians
in the Caucasus point to an obvious
toponymie
transfer from the lands of
Central Asia. These were
Bulgar,
Balh,
Varnu,
Shuman,
Humar, Madar
and some others (according to P. Dobrev).
The new studies concentrate increasingly greater scientific bold¬
ness for the reassessment of the theories, which have lost topicality, and
which discuss the Bulgarian origins against the private background of the
Turkic-speaking peoples and the Altai genesis. They completely clearly
show that shamanism had not been and could not be that cultural and aes¬
thetic platform on the basis of which Old Bulgarian monuments could be
identified: the monumental
Madara
Horseman, the Bronze Rosette from
Pliska, the Eagle of Asparuh, the Chest from Terracina, the treasure of
Nagy Szent
Miklos,
and the gold treasure from
Presláv,
among others.
Underlying the intellectual need for each one of them had been another
kind of consciousness, developed into a consistent mythological system,
having reached the levels of the full-fledged religiort(temple, liturgy, the
stratum of priests), something, which had proved historically unattainable
for the peoples of Altai.
The key motif has been a more outspoken stability on the basis of
the early Bulgarian cultural genesis and its hereditary features, specifying
this view within the range of Iranism.
332
The mythological base of the archetype acquires special signifi¬
cance, as does the tracing of the different attitudes, which take shape in
the different cultural ramifications. In this sense is also the location of
some persistent aspects of the Aryan and Iranian culture in a long position
of follow-up, to the levels of the religions.
The Mithraic archetype has been discussed in the intrinsic succes¬
sion from mythology to religion. It experiences its private variants, which
prove to be important orientation points for its closer identification in some
of the main ramifications of the ancient Iranian tradition.
Special emphasis has been laid on the place and importance of Sacae
Mithraism, an ancient view in the family of the Eastern Iranian peoples,
which has not yet been so distinctly legitimized. The historical and ethno-
cultural impetus, which the Sacae circle produced, had still been muted by
the scientific priority attached mostly to the imperial range of problems
connected with Iran. This impetus has proved an important mechanism in
the migration of the peoples from the Sacae-Sarmat areas, in the distribu¬
tion and
reaffirmation
of the Iranian views and culture from Central Asia
into Europe. The important role of the Eastern and Northern Iranians was
tangible even in the structure and culture of the empire under the Arsacids
and Sassanids, having adopted the epic tradition precisely of these peoples
as general Iranian.
The implication of this cross section concerns the more complete
stabilization of the idea of the lasting cultural conceptions of the environ¬
ment, which produced the Bulgarian ethos. This gives a chance for a re¬
verse follow-up of the Old Bulgarian correspondence to the fixed values,
covered in the second part of the book.
Some of the oldest evidences, referring to the world of Central Asia
and comprising mythological and historical topics, have been discussed
against a general historical and geographical background. An attempt has
been made, using them, to logically sift legend from informing reality. A
special close-up has. been given to the ethno-problem, which covers the
historical identification of the two big Sacae branches (according to Per¬
sian tradition) of Haumavarga and Tigrahauda, historically preceding the
emergence of their kindred peoples, that had militarily initiated the Kushan
Empire.
A few interesting mythological hints have been made, which refer to
333
the etymological analysis of the ethnonym Haumavarga , as the first Sacae
generation, having lastingly conquered huge territories in Central Asia, long
before the second wave in the
2nd
century
ВС.
The historical justifications
have been discussed, which give grounds for some of the Old Iranian peoples,
living in
Wèstern
Pamirs, to be defined as direct heirs of the Sacae-
Haumavarga. Deserving special attention here is the problem of the linguis¬
tic evolution of the ethnonym Mundjan . Against this ethno-geographical
background, a cultural crossing point has been sought with the idea of the
Old Homeland of the Old Bulgarians.
Some of the data, well familiar to science, concerning the specifici¬
ties of the Old Bulgarian world and the samples belonging to it, have been
introduced again in terms of cultural correspondence.
As one of the basic questions, the question of the Bulgarian religion
has been discussed as belonging to the monotheistic system of the concep¬
tions of the old-time Magi (according to
Al Masudi)
and its comparison to
the dualism of the reformist religion of Zarathustra. In this connection,
though sparingly, the book also covers the range of archaeological prob¬
lems connected with the architectural tradition of cult building in Central
Asia, related to older Mesopotamian influences.
The arguments in favour of the astral character of the Bulgarian
religion (according to Teophilactus of Ochrid and John the Exarch) have
been presented, finding correspondences in the decorative logic of some
Bulgarian monuments (the
Madara
Horseman relief, the Bronze Rosette
from Pliska and others). Added to them have been the cults for Fire and
Water, which had been universal for the Iranian world.
Some specifying points have been commented in the modelling of
time on the sign structure of the Bronze Rosette, in connection with the
latest assumption by Senior Research Associate
Dr
Petar Dobrev,
to the
effect that the Bulgarian monument reproduces (in a circle) the order, fa¬
miliar from the
Sogdiana
Tripitaka Calendar
(P.D.
Zvezdnata
religia
na
drevnite balgari [The Star Religion of the Old Bulgarians]).
Adduced to the cultural range of problems of the Old Bulgarians
have been some cultural parallels from Antiuity, which had survived until
the
19љ-20ш
centuries, and which had been established by direct studies
of Russian scholars among the peoples of Western Pamirs. Lasting corre¬
spondences with the conceptions of the Bulgarians have been traced therein.
334
The decorative patterns on some of the objects of the
Nagy Szent
Miklos
treasure have been discussed separately. Emphasis has been laid
on those samples, reproduced in whose
figurai
compositions are logically
lasting ideas, which have type analogues among samples on a broader
Iranian range. Traced in them has been not the Zoroastrian but an ancient
solar priority
Against the same cultural background, the symbols and signs have
been discussed on an Old Bulgarian seal from Pliska, as well as the se¬
mantics of the Bulgarian cosmological holy version in the depiction of an
Eagle and a Snake.
This galley, deriving from the artistic manifestations of the Old
Bulgarians, makes possible the cohabitation of the Bulgarian decorative
tradition with clear-cut mythological patterns, samples and ideas, carry¬
ing Old Iranian cultural prerequisites. In terms of this aspect (ethno-ge-
netic and cultural and religious), it is not externally imitative, but seman-
tically consistent.
Along with this, another objective of the investigation has been to
point out the differences between Zervanism and Zoroastrianism as two
separate religious systems in the Iranian-language space, whose centu¬
ries-long dispute also developed some late compromise versions adopted
in the Sassanid world. The problem has also been considered in relation to
the signs of the Old Bulgarian spirituality and the registering of its com¬
mitment to or distancing from these spiritual trends.
The main conclusion, gaining grounds on the basis of the logic of
the results, shows that the world of the Old Bulgarians shared the cultural
area of part of the Sacae peoples. A religion conformed to the environ¬
ment fMithraism in the agricultural aspect), whose key centre was the
solar morality, had been backed up by the astral Assyrian-Chaldean elite
conception of the Holy Time, proving to be a persistent opponent of Zoro¬
astrianism.
