THE PHRASEOLOGICAL SYNONYMY IN ROMANIAN
FROM THE INTEGRAL LINGUISTICS POINT OF VIEW
Abstract
Our paper aims at providing an analysis of phraseological synonymy in
Romanian. The tackling of this linguistic phenomenon is twofold: either by
analyzing the list of idiomatic phrases offered by dictionaries (in the cases when
the phraseological units only have their dictionary meaning
[signifié],
exclusively
given by language
[langue]),
or by looking at the synonymical relation between the
idioms from the text (in the cases when the meaning is influenced by the thing
meant
/
denotation), taking into consideration both the speakers and the contexts.
Whereas the first analysis has already been done (we refer to the contributions of
some specialists like Gh.
Colţun
or Mariana Andrei), the second method has not
yet been adopted in the monographical exploration of phraseological synonyms.
We embarked upon such a project, convinced that it is the most appropriate
approach, in accordance with the reality of language
(langage).
Since a correct study of synonymy has to base itself, first of all, on a clear,
coherent perspective on language as a whole, we believe that
Coşeriu s
linguistic
theory (known as integral linguistics) offers us the principles we need. We would
mention at this point only some of
Coşeriu s
essentials, which we based on and
which directed our efforts:
[a] What is spoken is always a language
(langue)
and any language is
spoken only in discourses
/
texts.
Coşeriu s
linguistics turns Saussure s upside
down (according to
Coşeriu
himself), because it takes speech as a starting point to
reveal the language.
[b] The historical language (here, the Romanian language), constituted as
tradition within a community, stands for a collection of functional languages. A
functional language ( structure ) has as its counterpart Saussure s term
langue,
since it is a unitary language from a syntopic, synstratic and synphasic point of
view and used as such in discourses. In fact, each and every speaker knows more
than a functional language, for his idiomatic competence also includes knowledge
from other dialects, language levels and language styles.
[c] A permanent characteristic of language is creativity (as an universal),
manifesting itself in speech and language as variety, just as it is obvious the fact
that the language and speech of each and every speaker is characterized by alterity
(according to
Coşeriu,
i.e. to be with someone else
[cf.
lat.
alter] ), which ensures
its homogeneity. The historical language ( architecture ) is the language as such,
undergoing internal variety from a diatopic, diastratic and diaphasic point of view.
[d] The full functionality of language gets manifested in the poetic
language
-
and
Coşeriu
sees poetry as literature generally speaking, as art
-,
all the
other so-called functional styles diminishing, in fact, its functional plenitude. The
261
language of the great writers coincide, actually, with the historical language, as
fulfilling its possibilities.
The things mentioned above point out why we chose to study synonymy
from a mainly functional perspective, especially in belletristic texts. What is more,
the prose (mainly the epic genre), due to its complexity, makes the synonymical
phenomenon become even more interesting; in a novel, for instance, one can find
differences (even different functional languages) between the characters language
and the narrator s.
Taking
Coşeriu s
linguistic theory as a starting point, also including two
other premises (i.e. [a] both in language and speech the word and the
phraseological unit can be both seen as linguistic signs, and
[β]
according to the
etymological meaning of the term synonymy [the Gr. synonymia
<
syn
+
ônoma],
the concept of «synonymy» only refers to the lexical, phraseological and lexico-
phraseological synonymy), we thus aim at proving (apart from the description of
the object researched) that there are not significant differences between lexical
synonymy and phraseological synonymy, since synonyms from both categories
behave in a similar way.
Starting from the brilliant manner in which
Coşeriu
comprehends the
general structure of language (see the grid below), we drew a few distinctions in
the field of synonymy. With reference to its occurrence, we distinguish
grosso
modo,
first of all, a synonymy in actu, a real one, corresponding to speech and a
synonymy in potentia, virtual or potential, corresponding to language . But, since
things are not that simple in language, using
Coşeriu s
distinctions, we are forced
to draw some new distinctions in order to be more precise.

In short, our opinions are rendered in the following grid, aiming to
organize the study of synonymy. In addition, the grid comprises all dimensions of
synonymy, for each and every compartment. We used many examples of lexical
synonyms as cases in point for these types of synonymy in the first part of our
paper.

In the latter part of the paper, entitled From idiomatic competence to
expressive competence in the field of phraseological synonymy in the Romanian
language , we looked at the phraseological synonymy in Romanian from an integral
linguistics point of view, putting into practice the principles and distinctions already
presented and exemplified in the third chapter of the first part of the paper. The
resources analysed are most probably illustrative:
36
writers (including the
chroniclers) from all over the country and from all epochs; in addition to these, there
are volumes of regional texts, dialect atlases, general dictionaries or dictionaries of
idioms and phrases, collections of proverbs and even journalism.
In the first chapter we tackled the phraseological synonymy at the
universal level and pointed out the fact that this aspect is worth discussing only as
possibility for the intralinguistic synonymy, only if the phraseological units are
263
adopted and adjusted according to the structure of a language due to some general
rules referring to judgement or speech in general (which, in fact, explain the cases
of polygenesis as well). Since it is a level where the content is seen as denotation,
asserting that there is such thing as interlinguistic synonymy is an error. One can
state that the phraseological synonymy is one of the possible linguistic
universais.
At the historical level, in the second chapter, besides some observations on
phraseological variants, we have tackled the phraseological synonymy as a result of
diachronic, diatopic, diastratic and diaphasic variation mainly because of two
reasons: [a] to prove that taking the syntagms obtained through the different types
of variation of the lexical theme as independent phraseological units is more
appropriate, for this is how speakers know them; [b] to illustrate the
synonymysative variation as mechanism of linguistic creativity, as part of
idiomatic competence (since we don t learn a language, what we do in fact is
learning to create within a language). One can thus assert that units such as

to herd point to a case of
phraseological synonymy as diaphasic variation. Even if we didn t ignore drawing
a comparison between phraseological synonyms from a semantic or formal point of
view, we were, however, less interested in this aspect.
The third chapter deals with the phraseological synonymy phenomenon at
the individual level, in texts. According to the distinctions made in the first part, we
look at the phraseological synonymy in praesentia, within which we separated a
phraseological synonymy in contact (e.g.:
Iar când
or
mai fi patru ceasuri până ne
ajunge sorocu şi începe balamucu, învierea îşi ia tălpăşiţa la gară, spală putina.
-
F.
Neagu; both idioms ar.e synonyms, meaning to scuttle away ) and a distanced
phraseological synonymy (e.g.: Dete

şi cetăţile ca să facă ştiut tuturor oamenilor...
[...]
cunoscură că fata era fiica unui
împărat vecin, căruia îi dară de ştire despre venirea fie-sei.
-
P. Ispirescu;

A first criterion according to which we presented the data collected to
illustrate the synonymy in contact referred to the functions of synonymy. We
consider the intensification and explanation functions more important. A second
criterion to classify synonyms (also true for distanced synonyms) refers to their
grouping into the four main
categorial
parts of speech (noun, adjective, verb and
adverb); within these classes, the examples given were arranged chronologically,
according to the epoch the writer belonged to.
With reference to the phraseological synonymy in absentia, we analysed
some examples showing some writers preference for a certain idiom or phrase to
the cost of others, synonyms which are missing because they are not motivated in
those contexts. For instance, it is not by chance that
Creangă
uses the phrase
a-şi
da
duhul
to give up the ghost from all the other idioms meaning to die . The one
264
who had died was known as Priest
Duhu
[=
Ghost]:
„Şi poate că din această
pricină bolnăvindu-se greu, şi-a dat duhul, tocmai când ajunsese îngrijitor la
biserica Nicoriţa din Tataraşi
(I.
Creangă, Popa
Duhu).
The last chapter deals with the lexico-phraseological synonymy at the
individual level only. We also referred to it, since it implies phraseological synonyms,
even if the relation in itself is lexico-phraseological. More than that, according to the
place synonyms have in discourse, we thought it proper to talk about relations of
lexico-phraseological synonymy or phraseologico-lexical synonymy. On the other
hand, as an inventory issue (either at the historical level or at the individual level), there
is no point in using the determinative term phraseologico-lexical.
Finally, our research leads to the following conclusions:
1.
The analogy between word and phraseological unit allows a similarity
between lexical synonymy and phraseological synonymy. In fact, the very
existence of the lexico-phraseological synonymy is an important proof. Since,
unlike words, idioms are rarely polysemantic, we could notice that in texts also,
generally speaking, they have a lesser capacity to get, under the pressure of the
context, meanings other than those given by dictionaries, even if in speech the
dictionary meanings seem to be influenced by the reference
/
the thing meant.
2.
We would point out that each and every distinction regarding the types
of lexical synonymy, based on
Coşeriu s
grid representing the language, were
proved true for both phraseological and lexico-phraseological synonymy
(synonymy in actu or real synonymy vs. synonymy in potentia or virtual
synonymy, with the proper distinctions for the historical and individual level).
3.
As to the functions of the synonyms (which we revalued) within the
expressive competence, we did not come across major differences between the use
of lexical and phraseological synonyms. One could notice the fact that, in the case
of juxtaposed phraseological synonyms, drawing a distinction between the
explanation function and the intensification function becomes even a more difficult
task, as compared to the lexical synonyms.
4.
As to the universal level (level of denotation), we noticed that one
cannot accept the idea of interlinguistic synonymy, since meanings are not valid
but within a certain language.
5.
From a historical point of view, tackling phraseological synonymy as a
result of diachronic, diatopic, diastratic and diaphasic variation, we thought it
proper, according to idiomatic competence, to see the phrases obtained from the
different types of variation as independent phraseological units (since this is how
the speakers know them). These types of synonymysative variation are worth being
studied, for they become a real mechanism of linguistic creativity, which is part of
the idiomatic competence.
6.
The question regarding the difference between
«expresii»
and
«locuţiuni»
is not really a problem which disrupts the study of phraseological
synonymy, since the term «frazeologism» includes both of them, as stable word
joinings (and still, we proposed that the difference should be made according to the
distinction between metaphor and metonymy).
265
7.
Our research proved that even in practice the great majority of
phraseological synonyms are verbal phraseological units.
8.
In the case of writers, we noticed that both the use of synonyms and the use of
idioms are constituent parts of idiostyle only in some cases (e.g.
A. Pann,
P. Ispirescu, I.
Creangă),
out of different reasons (ludic or because of a need of intensification). There
are also writers who use synonyms quite rarely (such as M.
Preda).
9.
Certain text traditions, such as
Tohăneanu s
assertion that more
expressive synonyms are to be found in dialogue, not in narration, are not always
true (take Rebreanu as an example), but, in most cases, they are.
10.
If language as such always gets known through its speakers, at the
individual level, as discourses , while the historical language (here, the Romanian
language) is seen as a collection of functional languages, then it cannot be
properly studied but in discourses or texts. It is also the case of synonymy, as
language matter, which reveals its beauty in literary works.
