Abstract

ROMANIAN EXILE LITERARY MAGAZINES:
LUCEAFĂRUL
(Paris
1948/1949)
At the end of the Second World War, the at¬
titude of Western Europe towards the Eastern
part of the continent was a very unreceptive
one. The Occident has closed eyes, determi¬
ned to leave a guilty sleep uninterrupted , wro¬
te one of the clear evaluators of its behavior,
Monica Lovinescu, in her memoirs.
Soon after the end of the large-scale confla¬
gration, the fight between fascism and demo¬
cracy was replaced quite fast with another, of
a similar violence
—
the confrontation between
communism and anticommunism.
The Governments (and especially many in¬
tellectuals) did not see/ did not (want to) under¬
stand anything from the grave situation of the
Eastern European countries, which had fallen
(with the approval of the Occident!) under the
Soviet Union s influence.
There, the destruction was almost total;
the governments led by Moscow generated lar¬
ge actions for intellectuals extermination, for
a distortion of consciousness and of national

identity. It was a tremendous and consistent
action of collective brainwash.
In Romania, any tentative to an anticom-
munist resistance withstood no chance. The
communist regime had forbidden all other par¬
ties and imprisoned
-
with a very clear aim of
rapid extermination
-
the entire political elite
of the country.
The forced abdication of the King (Mihai
I) was followed by the closing of the borders
and
-
in all domains
-
the total isolation of the
country attracted severe effects. The nationa¬
lization of the entire economy, the prohibition
of private property, and the initiation of the
process called agricultural collectivization ,
created an unprecedented chaos. In the enti¬
re Romanian society this acute disorder was
accentuated by a reform in the educational
system, by the abrogation of the Romanian
Academy, of the Greek-Catholic Church, of the
private foundations and publishing houses, of
the freedom of the press and by the initiation
of censorship. Officially, long list of prohibited
books was published (and this list was periodi¬
cally supplemented with more and more titles).
In libraries and bookstores classic authors were
replaced with other new names accepted by the
new leaders.
All in all, there was a terrible action of to¬
tal extermination of the Romanian culture, tra¬
dition and spirituality.
Understanding very well the grave situati¬
on, Mircea Eliade, one of the lucid consciousne¬
sses of the moment, wrote in his Parisian Diary
(February, 16th
1949):
the enemy is concerned
only with the elites who can be eliminated with
MiHAELA Albu,
Dan Anghelescu 258
no difficulties having a good police system . In
the same year in Paris,
Emil Cioran
sketched
a very clear portrait of this totalitarian dogma¬
tism in his first book, written and printed in
French at
Gallimard, Précis de décomposition.
In that time
—
when in Romania it was
impossible to express any kind of opposition
to communism
-
the majority of intellectuals
from exile agreed with Eliade s idea about cul¬
ture, considering it as the unique and operati¬
ve politics they could do in the new countries.
Today it is obvious that starting with
1948,
the
Romanian intellectuals had multifaceted poli¬
tical and cultural actions while in exile.
Thus, as political measures, The Council of
the Political Parties in Exile (August
1948)
was
established in Paris, editing a newspaper
-
La
Nation
Roumaine; on
May

the following
year, The Romanian National Committee
was founded under the presidency of General
Nicolae Radescu. In parallel, in Paris, some
cultural associations and organizations such as
„Mihai Eminescu (May
1948)
with the litera¬
ry magazine
Luceafărul,
The Romanian Center
for High class Studies
(1949),
The Romanian
Research Center
(1950),
under the patronage of
Prince Nicolae, and the most prestigious cultu¬
ral institution of Romanian exile
-
The Royal
University Foundation Carol / were also initi¬
ated. After being obliterated by the communist
regime, this Foundation rematerialized in the
capital of France in December
1950.
Its impor¬
tance was underlined by
Constantin
Visoianu
in a note to the French Minister of Foreign
Affairs: The Royal Foundation Carol I for
al-

most one century was in Romania one of the
most active cultural institutions in the service
of progress of Thought and Science. This docu¬
ment continued by saying that in the new con¬
ditions, on French territory, it will play the role
of a Centre for cultural activity not only of the
Romanian refugees, but also of those from all
over the world (see
Valériu
Florin Dobrinescu
and Ion
Pătroiu - Documente franceze privind
începutul organizării exilului românesc,
ed.
Vremea, Bucureşti,
2003,
p.
99).
Thus, while in Romania the value scale
had been inverted by the
instauration
of com¬
munism (important writers were forbidden or
censured, cultural institutions were prohibited
and replaced with others in the servitude of
the Soviet invader), in exile, the free intellec¬
tuals assumed the important role of continu¬
ation and promotion of their national values.
Paradoxically, some of these intellectuals (such
as
Alexandru Ciorănescu,
George
Ciorănescu,
George
Uscătescu, Alexandru
Busuioceanu,
N.
Herescu, Ştefan Baciu,
Octavian
Vuia)
be¬
came better known (or even famous) in their
new country than in Romania. Unfortunately,
until today, their names are almost unknown
to contemporary readers.
Regarding their cultural action we have to
underline that they did not limit their activi¬
ty to establishing organizations or foundations
and writing literature. They also edited news¬
papers and literary magazines in Romanian.
This was a certain method of continuation of
the literary press tradition from the interwar
MiHAELA Albu,
Dan Anghelescu 260
epoch, but also a way to maintain the Romanian
identity.
In order to give notice to today s readers
regarding this activity, our book is a „restituti¬
on of the first literary periodical of Romanian
exile, edited by some of the most representa¬
tive persona in Paris
-
Mircea Eliade, Virgil
Ierunca,
N.
I. Herescu etc.
The structure of the book is based on the
main themes of the studies, essays, and litera¬
ry chronicles included in the magazine, having
also a special chapter dedicated to literature
-
poetry and prose. We did not follow totally
the sequence of the articles but rather opted
for a thematically division:
Studii culturale
si
eseuri (Cultural
Studies and Essays), where ar¬
ticles such as
Literatură şi destin
(Literature
and Destiny) by
Al. Busuioceanu,
Două tradiţii
spirituale româneşti, Scrisul şi misiunea litera¬
turii
(Two Romanian

Traditions and
Writing and the Mission of Literature), both by
Mircea Eliade,
Laudă culturii româneşti
(Glory
to the Romanian Culture) by
Mihail Villára,
ali¬
as
Mihail
Fărcăşanu, Fragmente
(Fragments),
signed Z. P. (today we know that these initi¬
als cover Cioran s identity). It is important
to mention that some of the authors used
pen-names in order to avoid punishment for
their relatives in Romania!
Another topic,
Exilul şi luptaanticomunistă.
Articole polemice
(Exile and the Anticommunist
Fight. Polemical Articles) includes studies such
as Sovietizarea
culturii române (Sovietization
of Romanian culture), by Iosif Moldoveanu
(alias George
Ciorănescu),
Sovromcultura

;
A subchapter

two great personalities of Romanian culture,

We maintained the column

but we included here only some artide&froM
the magazine

Cuvânt pentru Pastele românesc

by the French professor Marcel Fontaine), La
cumpăna veacului
(At the limit of the century)
by
Octavian

and
Atitudine ortodoxă
(An
Orthodox attitude), by dr.
Petre Popescu.
The
other articles were thematically dispersed.
The details and the analyses of
Luceafărul
summary have been preceded by an ample de¬
scription of the political and cultural situation
in post-war Europe (in general) and in France
(in particular) as the country where a good frac¬
tion of our refugees found a place where this
first literary magazine of the Romanian exile
could materialize.
In short, Europe/ France after the war,
Romania under the Stalinist terror, exile, cul¬
tural exile, and literary magazines of the exi¬
le
-
these are some of the main themes of this
book.
Luceafărul
appeared only in two issues
because of the lack of money (May
1948
and
November
1949),
but is a very important pu¬
blication and it has to be better known and in¬
cluded in the history of Romanian literature.
It opened a long succession of magazines and
remained a symbol of a Romanian resistance,
MiHAELA Albu,
Dan Anghelescu 262
less loud but very profound , as a symbol of the
major obsession to maintain the Romanian
language and to continue the literary tradition
here , as one of the very active members of exi¬
le, loan
Cusa,
appreciated it, being at the same
time a small icon of all literary and spiritual
traditions, today still alive in our culture , as
Mircea Eliade, one of its founders, valued the
magazine.
