Andrija Štampar
remained until now largely unknown to
the wider public because it was stored in the Personal Archives of
An¬
drija Štampar
(signature
HR HDA
831)
in the Croatian State Archives in
Zagreb. The manuscript contains
867
typed and
24
handwritten pages.
Another copy of the Diary is kept in the
Mirko Dražen Grm

Memorial
Fund History of sciences of the Slavic peoples, in the Library of the Croatian
Academy of Sciences and Arts. The renowned historian of medicine and
corresponding member of the academy gifted this collection in late
1999.
The editors have compared both copies during the preparation of this
publication.
Mirko Dražen Grmek
was the first to start editing the Diary, which
had originally been divided into seven parts. The first part, consisting of
24
handwritten and
37
typed pages, describes
Stampars
journeys to the
United States, Canada and China; second, comprising
17
typed pages,
to Turkey and Bulgaria; third, on
23
typed pages, to Spain. The fourth
describes
Stampar
s
second journey to the Far East on
224
typed pages.
The fifth part combines the third trip to the Far East with the voyage to
the Soviet Union on
480
typed pages. The sixth part is titled At ho me after
return from Russia. On
47
typed pages, it describes a journey through a
number of European countries. The final, seventh, part of the Diary takes
39
pages to record the second journey to the United States and Canada.
To help the reader, this edition of the Diary is organized into nine
chapters: the original first part (the journey to the United States, Canada
and China) as well as the fifth part (the trip to the Far East and Soviet
Union) are each divided into two chapters.
The Diary was written between
1931
and
1938.
The first entry is dated
22
September
1931,
the day that
Stampar
left for Paris to board a ship to
the United States and Canada. On
8
January
1932,
he set on a trans-Pa¬
cific journey to Japan and China. That section of his voyage lasted from

1932.
The next entry is dated
13
December
1932
and it takes us to Turkey and Bulgaria, with the last note written on
22
December
1932.
The Diary is resumed briefly from
8
until
13
May
1933,
to record a trip to Spain. On
22
September
1933,
Štampar
left for his
second journey to the Far East. That part of the Diary is not dated. While
the exact date of his return cannot be established, the context and the
surviving correspondence suggest that this long and complicated journey
lasted into the autumn of
1934.
The following section of the Diary is equally undated but the context
indicates that in early spring
1934
Štampar
returned to the Far East for
his third and final journey to that part of the world.
Štampar
remained in
China until early June
1936,
when, travelling through the puppet-state
of Manchuria he arrived in the Soviet Union. The relevant documents
and the context indicate that he stayed there through June and July
1936.
Upon his return home in August
1936,
Štampar
wrote down his impres¬
sions and then, in September, embarked on another journey. It started
in Geneva, the seat of the League of Nations Health Organization, and
then continued to France, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Romania,
Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, Italy and finally back to France. While we know
that the journey lasted until December
1936,
the diary entries are not
dated.
Finally, in
1938
Štampar
undertook his last big journey before the
Second World War, which took him, for the second time, to the United
States and Canada. The records of the trip start on
25
January
1938
and
stop on
2/3
May
1938.
Although the trip continued after
3
May, the
extant copies of the Diary do not contain the pages describing the final
part of the journey.
Štampar
travelled as an advisor to the League of Nations Health Or¬
ganization, the Rockefeller Foundation and the nationalist Chinese gov¬
ernment of Chiang Kai-Shek; as a lecturer invited to leading universities;
and as a well-known and well-respected expert. He met highly-positioned
people: from politicians and diplomats to scientists and academics. He
witnessed key historical events: the Sino-Japanese war, emergence of Eu¬
ropean totalitarian regimes, Italian occupation of Ethiopia, and Soviet
five-year plans. Within his field of public health he was a participant and

the architect of a dramatic shift characterized by the penetration of new
ideas of preventive and social medicine into medical theory and practice.
He co-produced the new international health order whereby health took
over hitherto new functions that in the following decades changed health
in many parts of the world.
Andrija Štampar
recorded in his Diary many
smaller histories and personal tragedies, for instance of peasants in the
turbulences of war. The Diary is interwoven with his personal and family
life: tragedies, happy and sad times. It is an intimate history of a man who
empathized with others and lived through great pain and suffering. This
insight into
Stampars
thoughts counters most other sources by revealing
him as a tender, emotional and fragile person. But in addition and above
all, the Diary is an expression of optimism and a pronouncement of a
better world where disease and poverty will diminish.
