This study is related to the processes of deconstruction and reconstruction of the Ukrain¬
ian ethnic identity in
Warmia
and
Mazury.
It is an attempt to find answers to the following
research questions focused on the problems of assimilation of this group: What is the role of
Ukrainian schools, orthodox churches and other institutions, which aim at preventing the
Ukrainian assimilation processes in the region? To what extent does the programme of edu¬
cation at the grass roots level and education intended to advance technological progress as
declared by the Ukrainian community become a barrier to assimilation and to what extent
does it become inevitable, especially in the third and fourth generation of Ukrainians born
in
Warmia
and
Mazury?
Does it mean that the Ukrainian national identity that was being
built in
Warmia
and
Mazury
in separation from the traditional cultural environment of the
Polish and Ukrainian borderland may develop without obstacles? What are the chances that
it may be preserved in view of the processes that blur the borders of local communities and
change the functioning of the family and the institutions responsible for the transmission of
the ethnic traditions? What changes can be observed in the culture in three of the dimensions
most important for the survival of the ethnic group as recognised by the author? Firstly, in the
language, secondly in the religion, and thirdly in the social memory. These three traditional
foundations and pillars of the Ukrainian national character are increasingly less granted i.e.
sealed with tradition, and increasingly more prescribed as the agenda for ethnic communi¬
ties and institutions.
This study combines sociological and anthropological perspectives, quantitative and quali¬
tative approaches and diachronic and
synchronie
views. This multiplicity of research perspec¬
tives is particularly justified when the subject of interest is the identity formation processes
on the part of an ethnic group that is threatened with progressive assimilation processes and
developing its own strategies for survival and reconstruction of its identity, both on the indi¬
vidual level (identification of group members) and collective (institutional) level. Therefore,
the work uses various studies. First of all, these were short questionnaires conducted in
2005
in three selected Ukrainian communities; in Bartoszyce,
Olsztyn
and
Pasłęk;
their purpose
was to determine the most important manifestations of ethic identity of the given group. Sec-

ondly,
there was qualitative research conducted among Ukrainian intellectuals, who, in their
professions, social functions and social status may be considered as leaders of the Ukrainian
community in
Warmia
and
Mazury,
responsible for maintaining its national character and
included teachers of the Ukrainian language. In
2006, 15
interviews were conducted with
teachers working in primary and lower secondary schools where Ukrainian was taught. These
interviews sought to determine the linguistic situation of Ukrainian communities (primarily
families) and problems connected with teaching Ukrainian in schools. The second stage of
the qualitative research, conducted in
2007
and
2008,
was related to the role of the Orthodox
Church in the preservation and reconstruction of the Ukrainian national identity in
Warmia
and
Mazury.

interviews were conducted among Orthodox Church priests serving as ad¬
ministrators of orthodox parishes in the Dioceses of
Olsztyn, Elbląg
and
Węgorzewo.
These
interviews focused on the social and cultural role of Orthodox parish churches in the Ukrain¬
ian minority community; religion as a value of the native culture and as the crystallisation
axis of Ukrainian national identity for the diaspora; the range of the assimilation processes
(conversion and mixed marriages as well as secularisation) and dilemmas connected with the
ethnicity of the orthodox religion.
Moreover, in a study of the linguistic situation of Ukrainian families and the role of reli¬
gious tradition as the basic indicators of group identity and a barrier for assimilation proc¬
esses, the study used materials from research conducted in the Scientific Research Centre in
Olsztyn
between
1996
and
1997,
conducted among the largest Ukrainian populations in
Ma¬
zury.
The use of materials dating back to
1996
and
1997
made it possible to introduce a time
perspective into the consideration of the course of assimilation processes among Ukrainian
communities in the region. On the basis of this research, it was possible to refer to the situa¬
tion before
1947,
i.e. the memory of the Polish and Ukrainian borderland, which determined
the principles of coexistence of Poles and Ukrainians. The persons interviewed recalled the
notorious Operation
Wisła
conducted in
1947
involving the deportation and the separation
from cultural and religious life of people forced to settle down in a new, alien and often hostile
environment. What served as a counterbalance was the year
1989,
when minorities regained
their full legal, political and cultural rights. In addition to this, the research from
1996
and
1997
made it possible to compare the situation in the late
1990s
to that in
2005
to
2007
which,
in turn, made it possible to capture, at least to some extent, the dynamics of the changes after
1989.
Although a few years may not be very significant in the long history of this ethnic group,
in this case these years were especially important because the Ukrainian communities in Po¬
land gained full political and cultural rights, their social and cultural activity increased and,
as the study shows, important qualitative changes took place in the processes of assimilation
in this environment.
