WILD FLOWERS
OF AUSTRALIA AND OCEANIA
Of all the continents, Australasia has the greatest
diversity of wild flowers and flora, with more
than
12,000
known species and regular new
discoveries. Western Australia, in particular, is
a wild flower paradise. With scorching hot
summers and cool and wet winters, myriad plant
specimens have learned to adapt and thrive in
this harsh environment.
This beautiful book presents a survey of the
floral diversity of Australia and Oceania.
A comprehensive introduction looks at the world
of wild flowers and outlines the history of their
classification. It describes many of the habitats
where wild flowers grow, from mountainous
regions to floodplains, and looks at the ways
that plants have adapted to survive in their
habitats. The life cycle of the plant is described,
from a seed dispersed from the parent plant, to
seedling, flowering pollinated plant, and finally
to seed head.
Included in the encyclopedia are

species
of flowers, grasses, herbs, rushes, sedges,
trees, shrubs, aquatic and carnivorous plants.
The plants are arranged according to family and
the key features of each are described to help
identify them. Information includes height and
spread, flowering time, flower shape, size, petal
number, habit and form, leaf number and shape,
seed and fruit details. Each is illustrated with a
botanically accurate watercolour. There are also
brief descriptions of other related species, with
their key identifying features.

Michael Lavelle
¡s a
committed environmentalist.
A keen observer of nature since his early
childhood in Lancashire, Michael studied
horticulture at Askham Bryan College in York and
environmental management at Wye College in
Kent. He worked as a professional
landscaper
before starting a career as a horticultural lecturer
in the early
1990s.
Michael has designed and
constructed several educational exhibits at the
Chelsea Flower Show, achieving prestigious gold
medals in
1999
and
2003.
He currently works as
a senior lecturer in landscape management.
