Summary
Westerplatte
is a small peninsula situated in
Gdańsk,
at the mouth of the
River Vistula. At the beginning of the Second World War, it became a place
of great symbolism. It was Hitler s decision that the attack by the Third
Reich on the Polish Republic should begin here with a salvo from the bat¬
tleship
Schleswig-Holstein .
For seven days, despite being completely cut
off,
210
Polish soldiers fought off at least
2,500
German soldiers, Danzig
military units, policemen, and
SA
and
SS
forces, who attacked by land, sea
and air. The attackers had a huge advantage. One salvo from the battle¬
ship

and there were many such salvos

Westerplatte.
The defending troops had only one piece of field artillery which, before it
was destroyed, managed to fire only

Westerplatte
peninsula was, how¬
ever, made possible by the defending garrison s outstanding team work,
its excellent training, its use of modern Polish-produced weaponry, and its
tactical skill in exploiting all the advantages of the
Westerplatte
terrain.
Westerplatte
became a symbol of Polish soldiers struggle in defense of Po¬
land s independence. It is remembered as a site of one of the most heroic
incidents in the history of modern Europe.
Zusammenfassung
Die Westerplatte, eine bei
Danzig an
der Weichselmündung gelegene klei¬
ne Halbinsel, wurde am Beginn des Zweiten Weltkrieges zu einem symbo¬
lischen Ort. Nach dem Beschluss Hitlers begann hier am 1. September
1939 mit einem
Schuss des
Kriegsschiffes „Schleswig-Holstein der Über¬
fall des Dritten Reiches auf die Republik Polen. Sieben Tage lang hielten
etwa 210 polnische Soldaten gegen mindestens 2500 deutsche und Danzi-
ger Soldaten, Polizisten und Angehörige von SA und SS, die vom Land,
aus der Luft und vom Wasser aus angriffen, der Belagerung stand. Die
Übermacht der Angreifenden war gigantisch. Ein
Schuss des
Kriegsschif¬
fes (und es gab ihrer viele) hatte ein Gewicht von 1690 kg. Zusätzlich wur¬
den in Bombenangriffen 26,5 Tonnen Sprengstoff auf der Westerplatte
abgeworfen. Die sich verteidigende Besatzung besaß lediglich eine Feld¬
kanone, die vor ihrer Zerstörung kaum 30 Schüsse mit einem Gesamt¬
gewicht von 255 kg abfeuern konnte. Aus vier Geschützen wurden nur
104 Schüsse mit einem Gewicht von insgesamt 67,5 kg abgegeben. Doch
die Verteidigung der Westerplatte war deshalb möglich, weil die auf ihr
stationierte Wachkompanie eingespielt, hervorragend geschult sowie mit
modernen Waffen polnischer Produktion ausgerüstet war und beim takti¬
schen Vorgehen alle Vorteile des Geländes nutzte. Die Westerplatte wur¬
de zu einem Symbol für den Kampf des polnischen Soldaten um die Ver¬
teidigung der Unabhängigkeit seines Landes. Sie schrieb sich zugleich als
einer der Orte höchsten Heldentums in die Geschichte des heutigen Eu¬
ropas ein.

Westerplatte
devint l un des symboles de la lutte des soldats polonais

d armes les plus héroïques de l histoire européenne moderne.

бы польского солдата за свободу отечества. Оно также считается од¬
ним из наиболее героических мест в истории современной Европы.

czątku drugiej wojny światowej stało się miejscem symbolicznym. Decyzją
Hitlera

-Holstein rozpoczął się atak Trzeciej Rzeszy Niemieckiej na Rzeczpospolitą

Westerplatte była jednak możliwa dlatego, że stacjonująca na nim kompa¬
nia wartownicza była zgrana, doskonale wyszkolona oraz uzbrojona w no¬
woczesną broń polskiej produkcji, a w rozwiązaniach taktycznych wyko¬
rzystano wszystkie atuty terenu. Westerplatte stało się jednym z symboli
walk polskiego żołnierza w obronie niepodległości kraju. Wpisało się także
do księgi najbardziej bohaterskich miejsc w dziejach współczesnej Europy.
