The present year marks the anniversary of many a Finn¬
ish music institution. It is also a jubilee one for the nation
as a whole, for the independent Republic of Finland will
be ninety in December. The
FMQ.WÜ1
therefore be high¬
lighting landmarks and anniversaries in Finnish music in
the months to come.
The present issue shows a composer, Sibelius, and the
institution now bearing his name in different lights and
from various angles. Fifty years have nowpassed since the death of Finland s musical
icon and
125
since the founding of our only music university.
We enquire into the progress made by the Sibelius Works Project in the ten years
since it was launched (pp.
24-25).
As a case Glenda Goss recounts details of the new
edition of the Kullewo symphony and recent discoveries (pp.
18-23).
Sibelius is also
one item in this issue s survey of Finnish music research. The selective list compiled by
Liisamaija Hautsalo well reflects the broad scope of the academic research at present
being conducted (pp.
26-29) ·
The Sibelius Academy s mission was initially to train musicians, and research is
a relative newcomer. But there is more than this to the Sibelius Academy today. We
report on the management programme introduced at the Academy in an attempt
to make Finland s folk music infrastructure more professional (pp.
16-17).
We ¿so
present the Academy s Innovation Centre and its views on music and technology
(pp.
14-15).
Indirectly, at least, the Kullewo symphony is an offshoot of the Karelian rune-sing¬
ing tradition. In an article based on her own research Anna-Liisa Tenhunen demon¬
strates that the lament

one genre of this tradition

is still alive and active (pp.
30-
35).
And the Finnomenal section focusing on Finnish musical phenomena right at the
end of the magazine enters its second year. This time
Matti
Riekla
expertly links ele¬
ments both ancient and modern, showing how archaic folk motifs have been woven
into the Finnish heavy rock now winning international acclaim (pp.
50-51).
