Anyone heard any avant-garde here lately?
How is avant-garde doing in present-day Finnish music? And what about
experimental music? Are avant-garde and experimental synonyms; do they
overlap or are they sonorous inhabitants ofcompletely different worlds?
These questions are easy to ask, finding and interpreting the answers far
more difficult. The pessimistic viewis that both avant-garde and experi¬
mental classical music are conspicuous in Finland by their total absence.
Classical music focuses unquestionably on scores and works, almost as in
the good old Sibelian spirit. In the tidal history of music it seems that exper-
imentalism has reached its lowest ebb.
Viewed from the perspective of more recent musical genres, the concepts
of avant-garde and experimental do not seem to pose any problems. Rock,
jazz and even folk lead experimental lives of their own, and right now they
appear to be on the crest of a wave.
It all boils down to semantics. Avant-gardism and experimentalism are,
as concepts, already part of the aesthetic, political and moral history of clas¬
sical music. The younger genres are only just constructing their histories. If
contemporary discourse on Finnish classical music seems to lack an experi¬
mental dimension and jazz, say, eagerlyuses avant-garde terms, the content
may not always be clear. Because the real-time identification of truly signifi¬
cant avant-garde sure to leave its mark is very difficult indeed.
