In the Eye of the Storm opens with an
introductory chapter that describes the
public and private dramas, crucial
moments, and even some of the back-
stories that have shaped the theatrical life
of the city of Barcelona in the aftermath of
the Franco dictatorship. Subsequent chap¬
ters consider at length the creative
trajectories of two key companies (Els
Joglars and
La Fura
dels
Baus)
and five
specific playwrights (Josep M.
Benet i
Jornet,
Sergi
Belbel, Lluïsa Cunillé,
Carles
Batlle, and Josep
Pere Peyró)
who
have played vital roles in the contempor¬
ary Barcelona theater scene. An epilogue
titled New Spaces and New Visions is
devoted to new locales and the multiple
voices that have emerged on the Catalan
stage during the decade of
2000.
Barcelona, the cultural epicenter of
Catalunya,
is presently experiencing the
most dynamic and polemical period in its
modern theater history. It is the com¬
manding hub of an energetic theater scene
that in recent years has witnessed an
exuberant outpouring of new dramatists, a
steady crescendo in theater attendance,
and a continual increase in the inter¬
national presence of Catalan directors,
playwrights, and companies. Barcelona s
post-Olympian cultural landscape, more¬
over, comprises several architecturally
striking theater projects. The diversity of
opportunities to stage plays in Catalan at
an assortment of city spaces is unprece¬
dented, ranging in variety from com¬
mercial locales to publicly funded stages
to experimental alternative venues.
Since its origins in the nineteenth century,
modern Catalan drama has frequently ex¬
hibited a cosmopolitan and even trans¬
national impulse, engaging in an artistic
dialogue with international theater tra¬
ditions of both past and present and
forging its identity
vis-à-vis
its inter-
cultural associations. The path along
which the contemporary Catalan theater
scene has struggled to recover and recon¬
stitute the professional legitimacy and
visibility that it lost during the Franco dic¬
tatorship has been a complex process,
never lacking in melodramatic excess,
witnessed both on and off the stage. The
Barcelona stage, throughout its contem¬
porary evolution, has been immersed in a
stormy climate, whose relentlessly frenetic
atmospheric activity at times may impede
one from acquiring the distance necessary
to see beyond the hurricane.
In the Eye of the Storm aims to enhance
our understanding of the cultural, political,
and historical implications of the current
renaissance in Catalan drama. It will be of
interest to students and scholars concerned
with the cultures of contemporary Spain,
as well as the broader fields of European
performance and cultural studies.
