This book presents both the most important theories of elites as well as possibilities of application of
the theory of elites for the analysis of the selected political systems. An attempt at a new
classification of the theories of elites is presented where the criterion are the concepts of a social
group and a community. The earlier theories such as those of Gaetano
Mosca, Vilfredo
Pareto, but
also that of Charles Wright Mills defined an elite as an organised and uniform social group
dominating over the passive and diverse social masses. On the other hand, later interpretations
such as those of Harold Dwight
Lasswell, Karl
Mannheim or Suzanne Keller, presented the elite of
a given country as a group of elites competing with each other. Also the precursors of the theory
of elites are presented as well as Polish contribution to the theory of elite and the so called
neofunctional elitist paradigm and selected applications of the theory of elites. First are shown the
preindustrial systems, and later, totalitarian ones. The elite in a democratic system was shown on
the example of Great Britain and the USA. The last chapter presents empirical studies referring to
elites in Poland and in Russia during the transformation of the political system. So far there has not
been a synthesis like this one of the theories of elites (and of the possibilities of their application) not
only in the Polish scientific literature, but also there has not been such a work for several decades in
world literature on the subject either.
