A knowledge of a personage and works of Aelred of Rievaulx
(1110-1167),
an English Cistercian, mystic and an ascetic writer, not accidentally named
one of the four Evangelists of
Cîteaux ,
until recently was restricted in Polish
literature to the information gained in a laconic encyclopaedic entry1. Only
when
Mirosław Wylęgała
OP translated one of the major spiritual works of
Aelred
—

(De spirituali amiciţia)2
and
Ryszard Gron
sub¬
mitted a treatise summarising the controversies over the person of a monk3
did it enable to examine this extraordinarily vivid character appositely called
a great forgotten of the Middle Ages 4.
Aelred himself before assuming the habit in the monastery of Rievaulx,
the second after Waverley Cistercian foundation in Great Britain, stayed at
the Scottish Royal Court. Before a young and ambitious aristocrat a prospect
of a political career unfolded, or even of assuming in the future bishopric in
St Andrews. In
1134,
however, he arrived at a undoubtedly well-thought-out
decision about entering a monastery of Rievaulx, in which after over eight
years of staying, he took up a post of the master of the novitiate
(1142).
Subse¬
quently, he was appointed an abbot in Revesby
(1143-1147)
and then in Riev¬
aulx
(1147-1167).
Widely acknowledged as an authority, Aelred corresponded
with the sovereigns of France, England, Scotland, lay men, but also clergy¬
men, starting from the Popes finishing with the abbots. He actively partici¬
pated in the public life of the country, acting as a mediator and an adviser
at various disputes. Under his rule the abbey in Rievaulx rose to a leading
centre of a monastic life in the 12th-century England5. Not only in his abbey,
but also in subordinate daughter-houses, Aelred propagated a special, arising
out of his spirituality and theology, humanistic model of the management
of the monastic community. The above model did not attract the support of
his successors, who strived to banish Aelred, the abbot-reformer, from their
memory.
Despite the fact that Aelred created in St Bernard s shadow, he is indis¬
putably recognised amongst the most distinguished writers of so-called Cis¬
tercian Revival, or even called the second Bernard 6. The role of the abbot
of Clairvaux in a social and spiritual sense was so noteworthy that it prevent¬
ed from drawing an adequate attention to the contemporary writers of his. As

stated, [Bernard] appeared to prevail over the changeable and
very often tumultuous course of his epoch 7, in the way that for his contem-
