Deep South
is the cooperative effort of a team of social
anthropologists to document the economic,
racial, and cultural character of the Jim Crow
South through a study of a representative rural
Mississippi community. Researchers Allison
Davis, Burleigh B. Gardner, and Mary R.
Gardner lived among the people of Natchez,
Mississippi, for more than eighteen months as
they investigated how class and caste informed
daily lite in a typical southern community.

of W. Lloyd Warner, a noted social anthro¬
pologist at Harvard

and later the
University or Chicago who coordinated and
inspired numerous community srudies such
as this one. Expanding on earlier studies
of community stratification by social class,
researchers in the Deep South Project intro¬
duced the additional concept of caste, which
parsed a community through rigid social
ranks assigned at birth and unalterable
through life
—
a concept readily identifiable
in the racial divisions of the Jim Crow South.
As African American researchers. Davis
and his wife, Elizabeth, along with his assis¬
tant St.
Clair
Drake, were able to gain un¬
rivaled access to the black
communie*
in rural
Mississippi, access unavailable to their white
counterparts. Deeply moved by the harsh cir¬
cumstances the team encountered, Drake in
particular came to view their scholarship as
a form of activism on behalf
oí
their subjects.
Through their interviews and experiences.
rhe authors vividly capture the nuances in
caste-enforcing sysrems of tenant-landlord
relations, local government, and law enforce¬
ment. Among the most surprising discoveries
was Drake s investigation of the relative fluid¬
ity in race relations between poor whites and
blacks. But the chief achievement of Deep
South is its rich analysis of how the southern
economic system, and sharecropping in par¬
ticular, functioned to maintain rigid caste
divisions along racial lines.

of Deep South, lennifer Jensen
Wallach
situ¬
ates this germinal study within the field of
social anthropology and against rhe backdrop
of similar community studies of the era.
She also details the subsequent careers of the
study s distinguished team of researchers and
their contributions to the fields of sociology,
anthropology, and African American studies.
