The book focuses on the events that took place in Kolozsvár, prior to, during, and after the deportation. One chapter in particular relates happenings outside the city by addressing the faith of young men sent to force labor camps. Our study is based on virtually the entire available literature pertaining to the anti- Jewish legislation and destruction of the Jewry of Kolozsvár : a first hand review of books and book chapters written in English, Hungarian, and Romanian, and the local press of Kolozsvár from 1920 to 1948. As part of the living history of the city, literature sour¬ ces are complemented by testimonies of survivors of the deportation and of forced la¬ bor service, and by statements of Christian eye-witnesses, as well. Though not the largest Jewish community in Transylvania, the Jewry of Kolozs¬ vár is of particular interest for its exceptional cultural contributions. For centu¬ ries, Kolozsvár has had both a significant cultural and economic life both as tradi¬ tional university center and the heart of the Hungarian literature in Transylvania. Following the Revolution in 1848, the Jews were allowed to settle in the city, and they became actively involved in the life of Kolozsvár. Thus, in the so-called Trea¬ sure City (in Hungarian: Kineses Kolozsvár), seated at the Szamos River, an im¬ portant network of Jewish establishments was developed, including religious, eco¬ nomic, financial, social, cultural, and charitable institutions. According to statisti¬ cal accounts, beginning at the end of the 19th century, most of the Jewry of Tran¬ sylvania considered the Hungarian language as its native tongue. Jewish journa¬ lists lived and worked in Kolozsvár, contributing to the Hungarian press. They al¬ so founded Új Kelet (The New Orient), an important Hungarian language Jewish newspaper. It was a well respected newspaper, published as a daily in between the two World Wars, until September 1940, when it was outlawed shortly after the Vienna Award. After the Peace of Trianon [1920], Transylvania was placed under Romanian au¬ thority. Thus, the status of the Hungarian Jewry in Romania became that of a dou¬ ble minority ; they were discriminated for both their so called race and their lan¬ guage. Numerus clausus was introduced in 1927 and blocked their access to higher education. The decrees signed by Constantin Anghelescu, of the Minister of Public Education, barred Jewish students from Hungarian high schools, and banned the use of Hungarian language in Jewish congregational schools. In December 1927, ext¬ reme nationalists among Romanian students vandalized the Jewish communities in Nagyvárad (Oradea), Bánffyhunyad (Huedin), and Kolozsvár. In Kolozsvár, they de¬ vastated several synagogues, destroyed most of the Jewish stores in the center of the city, and damaged important Jewish property. Ten years later, in 1937, the Romani- From the Calvary to the Tragedy 603 an extreme right wing came to power. The government formed by the National Christian Party and led by poet Octavian Goga and university professor A. C. Cuza introduced a series of anti-Jewish laws and decrees. Goga introduced racial legislati¬ on into the educational system, expropriation of Jewish property was supported, and, on January 22,1938, the citizenship of Romanian Jews was re-examined, many Jews being expelled from the country. During this legislation the Arrow Cross move¬ ment became very powerful, Kolozsvár being one of its most important centers in Transylvania. On August 8,1940, the Romanian government passed a special law, the Statute of the Jews, which prohibited mixed marriages and withdrew the citi¬ zenship of most of the Romanian Jews. In late August 1940, following the 2nd Vienna Award, Northern Transylvania was returned to Hungarian legislation. Most of the Jewry awaited this transfer of power with hopeful anticipation; they abandoned their houses in the Southern part of Transylvania, which remained under Romanian order, and resettled to the North of the new frontier. Thus, many families moved from Torda (Turda) to Kolozsvár. The greater their disappointment was, when, without delay, the Horthy-regime ap¬ plied in the newly occupied territory the two Jewish laws that already passed the Hungarian Parliament. Shortly thereafter, they introduced a 3rd and the most se¬ vere racial law. Not only were the Jewish newspapers immediately outlawed, but all Jewish organizations, societies, and sport clubs were suspended (with the exception of the religious organizations). Starting the fall of 1941, numerus clausus became numerus nullus, which was enforced in both high school and college education, as well as in the economy. Practically speaking, jobs were no longer available to Jews and only a limited number of Jewish schools were newly authorized. The approval for these congregational schools was due to the personnel connections of a famous mathematics professor from Kolozsvár, Márk Antal (former a high ranking employ¬ ee of the Hungarian Ministry of Education), to Bálint Hóman, the Hungarian Minis¬ ter of Education. The entire budget for these schools was supported by local Jewish organizations. Given that all the Jewish professors had been fired from state schools and universities, Márk Antal could choose from among them and put together the best faculty ever available to a college. Thus, the Jewish School (Zsidó Gimnázium) і in Kolozsvár became an excellent center of education, offering courses and various activities, that permeated the entire life of scholars. Despite the anti-Jewish measures, the Jewry of Northern Transylvania remained faithful to both their Hungarian language and culture, and they continued to be¬ lieve that Hungary is a state where the legislation and constitution are obeyed and valued, as in the former Austrian-Hungarian Empire. This is why only a very few Jews tried to flee over the frontier to Romania, where they would ultimately have had a better chance to avoid deportation. Out of the over 16 thousands Jews of Kolozsvár, a city situated only about 10 miles away from the frontier no more than 200 people fled to Romania. Even after the German occupation of Hungary on March 19,1944, the Hungarian citizens of Jewish belief did not give up their hope that the Hungarian government would save them. Following the Nazi occupation of Kolozsvár, at the end of March 1944, the Jewish community of the city was severely intimidated by the arrest and detention of 150 families. The Germans, including several owners of enterprises, attorneys-at-law, medical doctors, 31 political leaders, and journalists imprisoned many of the most distinguished members of the community. Starting May 3, i944> the Jewish populations of Kolozsvár and of the communi¬ ties in Kolozs County were removed from their homes by Hungarian gendarmes and police. They were concentrated in a ghetto established at the brickyard in the Iris quarter, at the northeastern end of the city, under the direct command of Lász¬ ló Urban, the city s chief of police. The ghetto was overcrowded, had almost no sani¬ tary facilities, and the people resettled there had to cope with a continuous shortage of food and drinking water. Their only accommodation was in the barns without walls, used as drying sheds for bricks and tiles. There was no hospital and very lim¬ ited amounts of milk for children. The gendarmes established a mint , a building where Jews were tortured into confessing their hidden valuables. Three weeks later, most of them were deported in six transports to Auschwitz (on May 25, 29, and 31, June 2, 8, and 9). Only about 10% of these people survived the holokauszt. In addition to the approximately 200 Jews of Kolozsvár who fled to Romania by crossing illegally the Hungarian-Romanian border, a few were successful in hiding in the city. Three hundred eighty-eight exempted Jews were included in the so- called Kasztner-transport ; they were removed from the ghetto on June 9-10,1944, and sent to a special ghetto at the Wechselman Institute in Budapest. On June 30, they were sent to a privileged camp 200 meters away from the Bergen-Belsen con¬ centration camp, and they eventually arrived to Switzerland. As revealed by the daily newspapers Ellenzék and Keleti Újság (later Keleti Mag¬ yar Újság) of Kolozsvár during late summer 1944, the anti-Jewish decrees continu¬ ed being issued even after the Jews disappeared: most of these referred to the legal status of the former Jewish property. Procedures were established for the distributi¬ on of Jewish enterprises and houses, and for the use of Jewish capital. In contrast to the official government position, the Christian population of Kolozsvár showed a moderate attitude toward Jews. Despite the totalitarian system introduced after the German subjugation, many Christians of the city tried to hide, to save, or to provide help to their Jewish friends, colleagues, or neighbors. Five citizens of Kolozsvár ha¬ ve been recognized as Righteous Gentiles: university professor of business and eco¬ nomy József Tóth, who saved eight Jews, priest Andor Járosi, Minister of the Evange¬ lic Church in Northern Transylvania, Elsie Németi, wife of an engineer and profes¬ sor at the technical college of Kolozsvár, housewife Anna Pál, for hiding a four or five years old boy, and shoemaker Lajos Péter, for sheltering lawyer Dr. Jenő Neu¬ mann. (University Professor Raoul Sorban was also recognized by Yad Vashem, ho¬ wever, his activity appears rather controversial.) Priest Andor Járosi, Minister of the Evangelic Church in Northern Transylvania, hid the daughter of theater direc¬ tor Imre Kádár and issued several fake baptismal documents. Notable were the atti¬ tude of several medical professors, such as Drs. Imre Haynal, Dezső Miskolczy, and Dezső Klimkó, heads of different clinics of Kolozsvár, who interned several Jews in their hospital, throughout the critical period. Several others must be added to this list: medical Dr. Prach Wilhelm, lawyer Peter Rebreanu, university professor Attila T. Szabó, and attorney-at-law Aurel Socol all contributed to saving Jewish lives. Ot¬ her kinds of help included lending Christian identity documents, shopping during the restrictions of circulation imposed on Jews, as well as storage of personal goods and valuables of Jews throughout the war.
