ABSTRACT
The first part of the Burial Complexes of the Golden
Horde Age in the Verbovy Log
VIII
Kurgan Cemetery monograph covers research
by Mikhail Vlaskin, deputy director, Nasledie Dona Co. of the State Culture Office
of Rostov
Oblast,
Alexei Garmashov, Nasledie Dona Co. of the State Culture Office
of Rostov
Oblast,
and
Svetlana
Naumenko, senior research fellow of the Laboratory
of Archeology, Rostov State University.
In
1990,
in the course of explorations of the burial mound Verbovy Log
VIII
by the Tzymlyansk group of the Archeological laboratory of Rostov State University,
in
Dubovsky
Rayon, Rostov
Oblast,
between the rivers Don and Sal, three
extraordinary burial complexes were found dated by the time of the Golden Horde.
They are unique primarily because of the integrity of their organic items.
The burial ritual in general is common for the Golden Horde antiquities. In
three burial mounds three burials were found, one in each burial mound
—
two
containing women, and one with a man.
Moats surround both female burials.
Archeological and ethnographic parallels allow interpreting the ground
surrounded by moats as mock dwellings where the soul of the dead found his or her
last haven. The main role in the funeral rituals must have been given to bulkheads in
the moats (passages) built on the eastern and western sides.
Next to the filled moats, sculls of horses were found. Tomb design is similar: a
pit with a cavity in the southern wall. In Kurgan
1,
a fragment of coffin could be
traced, made of planks with residual iron braces shaped as nails and brackets.
Each tomb in the entrance hole had either a horse, bridled and saddled (Kurgan
5),
or a stuffed horse (Kurgan
1).
Harness was represented by iron curb-bit, ornament of the bridle, clasps,
stirrups, figured plates, bone-point of the whip. Careful fixation of carved bone
plates allowed to reconstruct the saddle found in Kurgan
1.
Inventories around the dead varied.
Common household items were found: iron scissors, knives, a bowl, a bronze
cup, a fire iron with flints, a bone needle-case with iron needles, and a leather bag.
Items that can be described as rare findings include an iron rod with an arrow-
like point, which may have been used as a kitchen or a dinner item to see if meat was
ready when cooking, or to hold big pieces of meat during meals, or when cutting
smaller pieces.
A multifunctional table set is unique, used as a small knife and a fork.
Remains of awooden boxwith handles fixed by iron yokes and equipped with
bone cylindrical handles, found in the female burial in Kurgan
1,
are rare findings.
The box was probably used to deliver a set of clothes to the place of burial, that was
then thrown over the deceased. The box was left inside the tomb, with all its bone
д·-
handles dismantled and placed beside.

The finding of two gold (burial moudl) and one bone (Kurgan
5)
buttons is
connected with the clothes.
A number of items can be classed as toiletry
—
a bronze looking-glass with
geometric pattern, a wooden comb, an iron item to clean ears and nails.
The set of women s jewelry is diverse: gold ear-rings shaped as a question
mark, silver bracelets made of plates with carved ornament, electra rings with
cornelian and glass incrusts, a silver ring, cornelian beads, rock crystal, and glass.
A silver amulet-case with a piece of wood inside is of particular interest.
A fragment of flattened coin (grivna) found at the right hand of the deceased
in Kurgan
1,
was interpreted as a variation of «Chiron s
Obol»
The male burial was accompanied with a set of weapons: an iron chain armor,
a wooden bow, a quiver of birch bark, with iron-pointed arrows.
Analysis of the funeral ritual and inventory attributes the burials from Kurgans
of Verbovy Log
VIII
to the pagan period of Golden Horde, chronologically placed
between middle
13
to late
14
century.
It s typical for this period to preserve rituals of funeral ceremony and material
culture of the Polovets.
Considering the similarities of
fonerai
inventory, its possible to date these
complexes by late
13
to second half of
14
century.
The second part of the Garments and Silk from Verbovy Log Kurgan monograph
is dedicated to the study of textiles found in male and female burials. The research
was by Zvezdana
Daudet,
Ph.
D.,
doctorate applicant of the Institute of Orient
under the Russian Academy of Sciences, member of the Centre International
d Etude
des
Textiles Aciens (CIETA). The objective to ascertain ethno cultural and chronological
frames of the memorial determined the main goals of the research: to study the cut
of the garments for the reconstruction of its form, and to study the textile to establish
its technical characteristics and designs.
Visual reconstruction of the garment was based on the restored cut of the
original color range identified by study of the dye-stuffs and ornaments of the
textile.
The author gives interpretation of reconstructed garments in its historical and
cultural context, supported by a wide range of sources: archeological, drawings,
written sources and ethnographic.
The set of waist garments included trouser-stockings and baggy trousers made
of striped silk with drawn-work (Fig.
1—2, 5).
Baggy trousers were made by the
Chinese design, but of Iranian Silk.
Underwear was represented by a right-wrap shirt, made of red silk with brocade
ornament (Fig.
3—5).
The woman s dressing gown (Fig.
6, 11)
was made of yellow silk with printed
pattern. Very wide straight sleeves were attached to the straight body of the gown. The
finish of the collar has direct analogues in dressings-gowns of Mongolian empresses
of the Yuan-dynasty (Fig.
9).
This item is much longer at the back than on the front,
typical for clothes of Mongolian and Chinese noble women of the Yuan-dynasty
(Fig.
10)
Top clothes in the woman s set are of particular interest, as they were made
of purple-violet silk (Fig.
12—19).
The entire wrong side of the fabric bears traces of
fors
and hides (Fig.
13—16).
Chemical and biological analysis established that this
article was
Hned
with fox for and had a warm layer of hide of a fat-tail lamb. The for
coat was decorated with a collar and a false
shirtfront
of brocade, with the picture of
Jeiran antelope (Fig.
17, 18)
The length and the width of the for coat underline the amount of textile used
to make it, lining from the fox for, the collar woven with gold threads, and false

Burials of Nobility of the Golden Horde Age Between the Rivers Don and Sal
shirtfront —
these are clear signs of the social status of the owner. The most important
thing for the contemporaries was the purple-violet color of her garment; the social
meaning of it may be understood from the Tangut saying, «Everybody bows to a
person wearing purple clothes».
Main parallels to the complex of garment being restored may be referred to the
Chinese garment, which is not surprising. Fashion in the Mongol empire was
determined by the representatives of the ruling ethnos, who followed the Chinese
fashion and imported clothes from China. Changeful tastes of steppe nomads played
an important role in the forming of the fashion in the Golden Horde. They tried to
wear such cloths that would show their affiliation to the empire, and preserved in
their costumes marks of the cultural serf-identification. In the complex under
consideration such marks of steppe traditions are the cut-out and the form of the
fur-coat, as well as its purple-violet color.
Eclectic tastes of the consumer, at least in part, determined the syncretism of
various ethnic traditions that characterized the craft and art culture of the empire.
In the male burial, two kinds of silk-monochromic taffeta and brocade were
found, richly ornamented Iranian fabric with pictures of parrots and fish. The author
managed to restore the rapport of the fabric (Fig.
39),
the cut and form of the item
(Fig.
20).
It was a skirt. Such kind of clothes is known from the pictures on the
Polovets stone sculptures, among archeological findings in rich Mongolian burials
in Chita
Oblast,
in the Nothern Caucasus in Alan catacomb cemetery near Zmeiskaya
Village, and in the
Kirgiz
costume. Such skirts were used by nomads as a warm
component of the costume, worn on top of the caftan.
The author dedicates separate research to the fabric. The collection has
31
samples of silk fabrics which in technological respect are classified according to the
method of interlacing and the dying-stuff used.
Analysis of the ornament motives in the fabrics revealed Chinese (Fig.
27, 29—
32, 35-36)
Iran
(25, 39)
and Central Asian (Fig.
33, 37)
art traditions.
The represented collection of the pattern silks considerably extends the notion
about the assortment of the fabrics of the Golden
Hord,
that were used by the
inhabitants of the Juchi Ulus (settlement) in Caucasus.
Many samples found in one memorial are of interest not only from the point
of view of their cultural affiliation, but also as revealing historical parallels with
textile findings, both available but not in scientific use, and future. In this relation,
attribution of Iranian fabrics is important. This kind of fabrics was first represented in
Golden Horde memorials of the Northern Caucasus and regions along the Volga,
together with known Chinese silk fabrics.
The catalogue contains all technical characteristics of the fabrics and the
description of their decoration.
The study includes a number of appendixes that describe the results of analyses
of dying stuffs, gold coating of threads, hear and hides, considered in the historical
aspect of the existence and house hold of the Golden Horde culture.
Appendix
1.
Technological Characteristics of Seams covers technical
characteristics of seams, that allow in certain cases to
restore the shape and character of the garments: warm, light, lined or unlined, etc.
Appendix
2.
Research of Leather Fabrics and Animal Hair The results
of examining the hide and hair of animals found in the
fragments of the garments are listed as a result it was determined that for warming of
the fur-coat the fur of afoxand the skin of alamb of afat tailed ship was used. The
research of fragments of lamb skin lead to the characteristic of particular trends in
sheep breeding of medieval nomads, in the authors opinion is not a redundant detail
Погребения

but demonstrates possibilities of costume as a historical and culturological source to
represent objective aspects of reality, in the context of it s historical being.
Appendix
3.
Research of Gold Coating on Threads of Animal Origin
and in Composition of Dyes Printed on Silk Surfaces
The result of research of golden coating on threads of animal substance and the
composition of the dying stuffs used on the surface of the silk fabric by printing,
quantitative structure of gold on the fabric samples was determined. It allowed to
distribute the silk fabrics in to groups, which correlate with technological and art
attributes in textile traditions of Iran and China.
Appendix
4.
Research of Composition of Glutinous Substance to Fix
Cold Coating of Threads and Prints on Fabrics The result
of studies of the composition of the glue staff for the golden covering of the threads
and for the fixing of the printing on the fabric it was determined that the glue staff
refers to the albumen of the animal origin.
Appendix
5.
Research of fabric dyes Dying stuffs used on the silk
fabric from Verbovy Log were examined. Examination was
based on chemical tests by thin-layer chromatography and infrared spectroscopy.
Also the nature of mordant considerably influencing the character of received
shade of the color was determined. In the result the plants used as dying raw material
of red color were determined
Rubia
Tinctorum L,
Bush Krapp (Oldenlandia
umbellate L), yellow color
—
«Persian berries» Rhamnus amygdalina and Ranopticum
carthamoides, and Indigofera tinctoria, that contained dark blue pigment.
The general character of the complex: domination of Chinese s silk, Chinese
cut of the woman s dressing gown, lamb hide of a fat-tailed sheep used in the fur-
coat
,
similarity in form to the fur-coats of Chinese nobles, a warming skirt from the
male s burial; The context of analysis of the funeral ceremony and inventory, give
grounds to assume that this monument contains representatives of nomadic aristocracy
from one of the Central Asian Turkic tribes that appeared in Juchi Ulus.
