Summary
An author, as a historian-archivist, took up the history of one of the oldest state
archives in Poland. Archival tradition of
Piotrków
dates back to the fourteen century
when the municipal archives functioned within the town area and
Sieradz
country clerk
came to
Piotrków.
In
1578
under the reign of Stefan
Batory
the Crown Tribunal was
founded, the supreme court for nobility. Due to numerous trials the records were col¬
lected in the tribunal archives which were placed in town hall. These three archives gath¬
ered records in their resources till
1793.
Piotrków
was incorporated into the Prussian an¬
nexation territory this year and than, after the period of the Duchy of Warsaw, under the
provisions of the Congress of Vienna of
1815
it was under the Russian annexation till
1914.
In
1828
the Public Record Office was established in
Piotrków
which was to gather archive
records and files of the Old-Polish Period. This Office was liquidated in
1882
and its re¬
cords were moved to the Central Public Record Office in Warsaw. In
1944
all files col¬
lected there were burned. After the reform of administration in
1867
Piotrków
became the
capital of the Guberniya and the seat of the Guberniya Government. That is why, archives
were established in
Piotrków
and functioned till the outbreak of the First World War. Af¬
ter the war operations all over this territory
Piotrków
was situated in the Austrian occupa¬
tion zone. In
1918
after resumption of independence by Poland it was the State Archives
in
Piotrków
among first archives to be established. During the Second World War the ar¬
chives functioned under the management of the German Archival Office in
Radom.
After
the war they operated as independent archives and than they were subordinated to the
State Archives in
Łódź.
In
1976
they regained the status of the Voivodship State Archives
in
Piotrków Trybunalski
and they have been functioning under the name of the State Ar¬
chives in
Piotrków Trybunalski
since
1984.
This publication consists of four chapters. The first one was devoted to archives
functioning all over
Piotrków
territory from the fourteenth century till
1918.
The following
archives were discussed: town, landed, tribunal and municipal ones as well as the Ar¬
chives of
Piotrków
Guberniya Government together with the period of the First World
War. The second chapter pertains to organization and functioning of the State Archives in
Piotrków
in
1919-1951.
The legal bases for functioning of state archives accompanied with
organizational structure diagrams were discussed in the first sub-chapter. Than, the his¬
tory of the archives of
Piotrków
in particular historical periods was discussed namely the
Second Republic of Poland, period of the German occupation and years
1945-1951.
The
third chapter was devoted to the employees of the archives with division into the periods
1919-1945,1945-1951
as well as evaluations and characteristics of their scientific academic
achievements. Particular attention was given to Adam
Próchnik,
historian-archivist, pub¬
lisher and politician. The last chapter covers various aspects connected with collecting and
working out of the archival resources gathered for all these years. The structure of the

archival resources, the number of realized preliminary archival researches and visits into
the scientific study were presented in the form of graphs and tables.
The content of this research gives an answer for the main question
-
the main
hypothesis which was to prove that the State Archives are one of the oldest archives in
Poland. The issue of the State Archives in
Piotrków
has never been touched up till now.
There were only a few articles written including three ones worked out by the author of
this publication. Detailed questions covered various aspects of activities of the archives
and their reflection can be found in particular chapters and sub-chapters. They related to
the organization of the archives, their functioning and the influence of people employed
in them on their activities. This piece of work is enriched with five colourful graphs, four
diagrams and thirteen tables.
The archive resources currently reflect the activities of the institutions and offices
operating all over
Piotrków
in different periods of time. One can hazard a guess that
among five kilometres of files currently stored in the archives as much as one third of
them were written in Russian language.
