Bolesław
the Curly was the third son of
Bolesław
Ш,
prince of Po¬
land and his second wife Salomea, princess of Berg. Until now the
princeps
did not have a written biography, quite surprisingly as the
time of his reign was interesting and well known in historical science.
This work consists of three chapters: I The first years, his inheritance
and the beginning of his single-handed rules,

Domestic policy of
princeps
Bolesław
the Curly,

Foreign policy of
Bolesław
the
Curly. As the titles of the chapters indicate we tackled the following
problems: historical beginnings and shape of Bolesfew s inherited
province, their political, economical and social conditions, followed
by problems connected with the will of
Bolesław
ICrzywousty. The
next part is devoted to
Bolesław s
domestic and foreign policy, his
relationships with Holy Roman Empire, Russia and Prussians. The
work deals either with his foundation activity, his will and private
life
-
the issue of two wives and children.
Bolesław
the Curly was born about
1122.
His father, who died
in
1138,
partitioned Poland in his will. At the beginning he left five
sons, however, only three of them received their parts.
Bolesław
gave
Małopolska
and
Śląsk
to
Władysław
II, who became the
prin¬
ceps.
Mazowsze
and
Kujawy
went to
Bolesław
and
Wielkopolska
to Mieszko. Their mother got a part for herself and it was
Łęczyca
and
Sieradz.
She lived there with the two younger sons
Henryk
and
Kazimierz.
During the first years everything went peacefully. After
1140
the oldest brother started searching for allies to seize every
part of the country for himself. In the war of
1146
the younger
brothers defeated
Władysław,
who consequently was chased away.
Władysław
made a decision to pay a visit to
Konrad
III, the king
of Holy Roman Empire and asked him for help. In Poland
Bolesław
became the
princeps,
he got all
Małopolska
and gave his younger
brothers Mieszko and
Henryk
new parts of land. However,
Kon¬
rad
III, who was helping
Władysław
to get his principality back,

attacked Poland.
Bolesław
and Mieszko organized a great defense
and they defeated his big army. The King decided to approve new
princeps
of Poland,
Bolesław
IV the Curly.
Bolesław
began fighting
with pagans of Prussia and he sent his younger brother Mieszko
on a crusade to
Połabie.
The next stage of his reign was helping his
Russian ally
Wsiewołod
to regain his crown. In
1152
Konrad
ΙΠ
died. The great Frederic
Barbarossa
became the Emperor of Holy
Roman Empire. In
1157
he organized a vast army and attacked
Poland. He was advancing rapidly and Polish
princeps
could not
hold him back. The Emperor reached
Poznan
and wanted
Bolesław
to swear an oath of fidelity to him.
Bolesław
accepted such terms
to avoid further consequences, the Emperor approved his reign and
returned home. The following year, in
1166,
Bolesław
organized
a great war with Prussia to convert them to Christianity, however
his big army fell into a trap and his younger brother
Henryk
was
killed.
Bolesław
went back to his homeland, and probably never
fought with Prussia again. In
1167
knights, Mieszko, the prince of
Wielkopolska
and
Kazimierz,
the youngest brother of them, organ¬
ized revolt against him in
Jędrzejów.
They threatened to take the
Małopolska
principality unless he gave some part of the land to
Kazimierz. Bolesław
went along with that request. He gave
Kazi¬
mierz
only
Wiślica,
however, knights approved his decision.
Bolesław
had two wives. The first one was a princess of Russia
named
Wierzchosława.
They got married when they were children.
They probably had four children
-
Bolesław, Leszek, Wierzchosława
and another daughter. We do not know her name, but we know
that she married the
princeps
of Russia, Wasylko.
Wierzchosława
died probably in
1165
and after that
Bolesław
married Maria. We
do not know anything about her. We suppose that she died short¬
ly after the wedding. She did not have any children.
Bolesław
was a very unusual
princeps
and he ruled in really
interesting times. In that time Poland ceased to be a land with one
king and started to become a country with one
princeps
and sever¬
al princes who were in charge of different districts. The
princeps
of
Małopolska
was the most important person in Poland, however,
there were princes of
Mazowsze, Śląsk, Wielkopolska
as well. They
had to work together and make mutual decisions.
Bolesław
was the
only
princeps
who ruled for twenty seven years. In that time there
was peace in Poland, all princes worked together and the country
was growing and developing. It was a contribution of
Bolesław.
After his reign the peaceful era ended and the princes were all
fighting for many years.
