Summary:Abstract: "Increased complexity in parallel and multiprocessor system architectures has accentuated the need for tools that assist in understanding the behaviour and evaluating the performance of these systems. This report describes a simulation model of the proposed Heterogeneous Multi-ring Dataflow Machine (MDM), consisting of a number of processing element rings, structure store rings and one global allocator ring. The structure of the multi-ring dataflow machine simulator, MR, is presented. Distributed storage management is introduced. A proposed dynamic hardware throttle mechanism which matches program parallelism to machine parallelism is discussed
A scheme that controls the execution of macro dataflow instructions is proposed for integration into the throttle mechanism. This report serves as the defining document for MR, which is one of the tools used for programming and architectural experimentations in the proposed multi-ring Manchester Dataflow Machine.
