La Critique

française notamment, se défie peu des
déclarations des poètes, qu elle archive,
«
établit
»,
analyse, cite, souvent
docilement, au mépris des exigences méthodologiques qui sont les siennes.
Consciemment ou non, elle avoue ne pouvoir fonder son autorité qu en
affermissant la leur. La Critique, au lieu de servir ses propres intérêts,
consolide ainsi l Institution poétique qui, dissidente et autocratique,
transversale, éparse et diverse, trouve encore le moyen de se déclarer
réfractaire à toute institutionnalisation
;
en dépit des consensuelles
Académies et des arts poétiques.
Saint-John Perse prend sur lui d anticiper sur la Critique, qu il tente
d orienter ou de neutraliser. Son nom n appartient pas aux Lettres, et il n a
pas écrit d art poétique. Mais on le voit, ici et là, évoquer une société secrète
(dirait Valéry) de
«
pairs

pour en faire une galerie de prête-noms qui
illustrent ses propres choix.

n est de Gide, ni de Claudel ni de Fargue que
persiens...

Aussi l équation poétique et critique chez Perse pourrait-elle
être pensée autrement

Car la poésie de Perse s éclaire de lumineux amers et s anime de
puissantes balises conceptuelles et méthodologiques qui devancent l emploi
même de nomenclatures stylistiques...

et l on y voit naître et œuvrer des
concepts

tels ces motifs totémiques, figurations mythiques
nourries au legs de deux rhétoriques, l antique

et sa propre logique profonde, qui assimilent amis et œuvres à ses motifs les

cristallise autour de son œuvre une critique, d abord

Bel Lakhdar est enseignant chercheur, notamment à

de Meknès (Maroc). Il a publié de nombreux articles autour
de Perse et des questions de formation des enseignants. Cet
ouvrage est une entière refonte de sa thèse d État, soutenue à Fès
sous le titre Saint-John Perse, poète et critique.
