SUMMARY
The publication presents twenty years of history of Pleszew s self- government.
The period includes
1919 - 1939.
It was important time not only for
Pleszew,
but also for entire Poland. After over
100
years Poland recaptured the independence.
The essential role in structure of state was entrusted to the local self
-
government.
The self
-
government solved a lot of problems which the new state encountered.
To those tasks belonged among others: construction of flats, installing a sewer system
and water
-
supply in the city, care of the fire safety, education, public assistance or the
supply of energy. The economic situation also forced the self
-
government to make
efforts in the scope of solving of the unemployment matter. How did
Pleszew
manage
those problems, the author concluded herein the publication.
The problems and the issues characteristic for the local self
-
government were
also provided with analysis. Issues of election to the City Council of
Pleszew
were
presented above all. Persons who were chosen to the council were established with
indication from which electoral lists they were candidates. The
Pleszew
results of the
election were showed relating to the entire
Poznań
province. To imaging the local
political life the knowledge about the magistracy (the board) and the city council can
deliver the essential information. So elections to those bodies of the municipal self
-
government were reconstructed.
The biographical entries of persons involved in activity of Pleszew s self
-
government in interwar period had to be in the publication. So the figures of mayors
of Plaszew and the chairmen of The City Council of
Pleszew
were described.
The list of names of Pleszew s streets were also placed in the publication
in the form of the appendix. They gave, what the given street be called in the period
of the Partitions of Poland (before
1918),
in the interwar period
(1919 - 1939),
during
the occupation
(1939 - 1945),
in the period of Polish People s Republic
(1945 - 1989)
and what name the given street has got at present.
The source material used in the publication came mainly from the National
Archives in
Kalisz.
Records of the Registry Office and relations and memories of persons
remembering that period were also an essential source.
