VOLUME II SOCIAL REACTION TO MENTAL
HEALTH PROBLEMS
These sections address the nature of the contemporary response to
mental illness, and include areas relevant to law and disability as well as
treatment and social control.
Acknowledgements ix
Introduction 1
part 6
Stigma and labeling 5
Mental illness is one of the most stigmatizing conditions there is, and
there is a wealth of literature which directs attention to the stigma of
being labeled mentally ill. Classic as well as contemporary research
examines not only public labels, but the effect of labels on treatment
and care for those with mental health problems.

Normalization, empowerment, and recovery 307
Psycho-social rehabilitation has been the preferred treatment model for
individuals with chronic mental health problems, and emphasizes the
ability of individuals with mental illnesses to live normal lives in the
community. Empowerment-based ideologies of care emerged in the 1980s,
and are reflected in the current emphasis on recovery.

Mental illness as disability 363
Severe mental illness is often a disability because of functional limitations,
and many adults with mental illnesses are disabled. Another element to
the literature on law and mental health has been the inclusion of mental
illness in the American Disabilities Act (ADA). Readings will examine
mental illness as a disability as well as recent research on the
consequences of the ADA for those living with mental illness.
