SUMMARY
The characteristic phenomenon in the social, scientific and cultural life
of Poland in the period
1918-1939
was regionalism. It has developed especially
dearly as a grassroots movement, focusing on an advancement, cultivation
and promotion or renewal cultural heritage of that region as well as care of its
economic development. The inhabitants of
Plock
-
a dty with a rich historic
tradition took part in the regional movement of the 2nd Republic of Poland.
This study is an attempt to present thoroughly the activities and achievements
of the local researchers in the years
1918-1939.
The aim of this work was to create the answers for many basic
questions concerning on
Plock
regionalism: how economically-administrative
condition of the dty, which was devoid of industry and relegated to the county
dty role, has influenced the shape of
Plock
regional movement in the 2nd
Republic of Poland?; which of the institutions and sodeties working in
Plock
were involved in regionalism and in what extent?; what initiatives were
undertaken as part of this movement and what place the folk culture took up
among them?; whose were the regional researchers?; what influence had their
activities on the shape of
Plock
inhabitants identity?; which of the demands
of The Program of Polish Regionalism, published in
1926
were carried out
in
Plock?
To give an answer for research questions, the work has been
supplemented by a subject order retaining chronology. The first chapter
is an attempt to define
Plock
Mazovia
-
the region (which besides the dty)
is the main object of the researchers. The second chapter concerns the
traditions of
Plock
regionalism, so defines its origin, indeed. The third one
describes the basic program of
Plock
regionalism, which also contains as well
an all-Poland directives as individual statements of
Plock
theoretidans. In this
part there is a draft of the group portrait of the local activists. The fourth

chapter presents institutional base of a regional activity with a special attention
to the functions of
Plock
societies, taking part in this movement. In the fifth
and sixth chapter there are mainly local initiatives discussed, with
socio¬
cultural,
socio-economic and administrative division. The seventh chapter is
an attempt to reconstruct the self-likeness of Plock s people, based on regional
journalistic and literary legacy of the period of the 2nd Republic of Poland.
The book contains photographs, appendixes with chosen source
material, biographical entries and the calendar of
Plock
regionalism
in the years
1918-1939.
