Summary
The book contains presentation of political attitudes of the nobility of the
Lubelskie
Voivodship within the Commonwealth of BotiiNations. An author tries to recon what the
real opinions of particular citizens were, citizens who were not too brilliant figures in
politics and nationwide. An effort was made to choose a relatively representative group of
people according to their activity on a political ground. And it usually was followed by
popularity among co-citizens.
Analyzing the most important events from the history of rules of
Michal
Korybut
Wisniowiecki and JohnfflSobieski we usually deal with statements and opinions of people
belonging to this particular group because it is them who distinguish themselves above the
great mass of brothers of the nobility. On the basis of these we must conclude about
widely recognized views and political options. Such fragmentary information extends, for
sure, the margin of error which has to exist having such a spare source material relating to
particular representatives of the Lublin Region nobility. As a result of this the nobility had
to be treated as community and, in the above study, it is discussed rather as an attitude of
the whole Voivodship not particular persons.
With such an assumption, the most reliable source of information utilized here is
regional diet s files which give the picture of conducts of debating nobility. Moreover, one
can conclude about the influence of people whose views are known better thanks to their
broader activity on nationwide forum. A certain possibility of verification also gives,
unfortunately, not so numerous correspondence.
While using such tools, it emerges the picture of the nobility of the
Lubelskie
Voivodship as community not free from internal conflicts, however, quite explicitly
expressing themselves about the issues relating to the whole country. In this study, three
political events were particularly stressed, events which activated the gentry of the whole
Commonwealth in a special way. These were, most of all, elections
-
the most important
expression of golden liberty of political nation . The election of
Michal
Korybut
Wisniowiecki made by the middle gentry themselves against the opinions of senatorial
elites must be stressed. Inhabitants of LublinRegion did not oppose the dominating trends
during these events. Their attitude during the rule of this monarch confirms universality of
support expressed towards him. A special moment of trial was the period of circling of levy
in mass upon Golebie. Inept King
Michal
went down in the heavily tried Lublin Region
gentry s estimation, however, he did not loose their support.
His successor probably enjoyed greater popularity, victor of Vienna
-
John
Sobieski.
In
accordance with the whole Crown inhabitants of Lublin Region supported his election.
Actual attitude towards this ruler can be discussed, however, on the basis of the analysis of
attitudes in later period of his rale. The Lublin gentry looks favorably against a background
of great part of their brothers from other regions of the Commonwealth. They showed the
attitude definitely pro-ruler, positively respond to the proposals of the ruler included in
instructions, there was little influence of malcontents all over this territory. It can be surely
attributed to the influence of such people as
Jan Karol
Danilowicz or
Stanislaw
Antoni
Szczuka.
The attitude of inhabitants of Lublin Region towards the issues relating to entirety of
state was traditionally conservative. One could even try to put a thesis that in the event that
deeper reforms were to be introduced citizens would, in greater part, be in opposition to
the ruler. However, calling this a reactionary attitude would be a bit unjust because such an
attitude did not differ from standards of the whole state. It must be stressed, at this
moment, that the Lublin Region gentry did not torpedo King s plans as it was usually done
by great part of Lithuanians or inhabitants of Great Poland being under an influence of the
opposition.
One should not detect any particular case of creating the views in the
Lubelskie
Voivodship. In their pro-royal attitude, the local gentry did not allow the breach of law
which ensured them, at least in theory, superior position in state. In spite of complaining
about breaking the Seyms which took place as many times as four during the rule of King
Michał
and five during the rule of John
Ш,
resignation from the right to
weto
was not
taken under consideration. It was a clear expression of attachment to traditional laws and
fear of any limitation of them.
One could try to state that attitudes of the Lublin Region gentry were representative
for the whole Crown. It is not about the approach to particular problems, but, so to speak,
entirety of behavior. Coining from the heart of the Commonwealth the nobility
constituted, as it were, conglomeration of predominant features and views. On the one
hand, strong attachment to ruler was stressed, people were impressed, without doubt, by
his fame as the victor of
Chocim
and Vienna, however, they did not allow for the possibility
of extension or even improvement of his rule. The inhabitants of Lublin Region surely
noticed financial difficulties of state and lollowing from them threat caused by weakness of
not-paid army, but they repeated demands to decrease burdens fallen to the Voivodship
several timed. It can be stated, thus, that they constituted a typical example of attitudes of
contemporary gentry admiring, on the one hand, victorious leaders and appreciating the
effort of soldiers, but stinting in financial resources for their maintenance. As most of the
nobility they noticed problems of state but they were not willing to give any contributions
for the benefit of it, particularly, if they were to be higher than those given by other
Voivodships or regions.
