Summary
The excavations at Morton Lane, Beverley undertaken in
1999
and
2001
have revealed a range of
medieval and post-medieval features and deposits associated with domestic occupation, with some
evidence for industrial and craft activities. Occupation began in the 12th century and, after an
enigmatic hiatus in the 14th century, continued during the 15th and 16th centuries, with a later
18th-
century
component on the western edge of the site.
The report includes the results of subsequent and independent archaeological investigations
carried out by Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd to the south of the site at
69-73
Morton Lane. Here,
deeply-stratified deposits of similar date were identified including multi-phase structural evidence,
pitting and boundary definition. Finds recovered from both sites include ceramics, as well as small
quantities of faunal remains, metalwork and ceramic building material, along with rich
environmental deposits which provided evidence of textile processing. The excavations provide the
first archaeological evidence for medieval occupation and industry in this area of Beverley.
