In this book, little known facts of the life and creativity of the first *~
Bulgarian university professor of geography Anastas Ishirkov
(1868-1937)
are presented. He graduated in history at the Sofia University
(1891),.
implemented his PhD in geography in Leipzig
(1895),
and specialized in
Berlin
(1896),
Vienna
(1899)
and Paris
(1900).
In
1903
he was elected a
professor of geography in the Sofia University. He is an author of
40
books,
320
articles and
32
literary works.
The first part of the book consists of research about him.
The origin and meaning of Professor Anastas Ishirkov s name and
surname has been discussed. The name „Anastas has a Greek origin
and in translation means „resurrected . The surname „Ishirkov comes
from the Persian-Turkish
„şir ,
which means „a lion , „a brave man .
Besides Anastas Ishirkov s five published pseudonyms
-
„A. I. , „A. Ish. ,
„Ish-rk , „Z. and „A. Vazkresenski , two more, unknown until now, have
been revealed

and
„lv.
Milin .
Now in Bulgaria a village in Dobrudja, four streets in
Lovech
and
Sofia, and a lecture hall in the Sofia University are named after Anastas
Ishirkov.
Anastas Ishirkov s research in toponymy and in four of its branches:
oikonymy, horonymy, urbanonymy and hydronymy, is described in detail.
This is the first time data about the previously unknown humorous
newspaper
„Farkat
List („A Flying Sheet ), edited by Anastas Ishirkov, is
published.
The second part is published correspondence with Professor
Konstantin
Irechek from Vienna, Professor Vasil
N.
Zlatarski
and the ethnographer
Stoiu
N.
Shishkov.
There are a total of
39
documents,
33
of which are published for the
first time.
In the third part, using short excerpts, little known scientific publications
by Anastas Ishirkov are now presented;
35
articles,
9
reviews and one
translation. Nine, almost unknown artworks by Ishirkov are now published
for the second time:

poems,
3
stories and one epigram. All publications
in the third part are from the period
1896-1932.
The book ends with
17
illustrations, name and geographical pointers.
The edition is devoted to
140
years from the birth of Professor Anastas
Ishirkov
(1868-2008).
