A New Shape of the World
The Birth of the European Medieval Civilization
Summary
The book proposes an anthropological-cultural look at the process of birth of the
European medieval civilization, considering the whole historical complexity of the
phenomenon. The author is particularly interested in the relations between transfor¬
mations of the social structures and changes noticeable in the culture of the inhabi¬
tants of early medieval Europe. He tries to present the dynamics of the transforma¬
tions, paying attention to how succeeding societies joined the current of civilization
changes, which caused new patterns of life to penetrate further and further parts of
the continent.
The look at the beginnings of the European medieval civilization, proposed in
this outline, seems justified by, among others, the revealing of quite a new collec¬
tion of source information which is at our disposal. We owe it first of all to the ar¬
chaeological research carried intensively in many European countries. The research
has significantly widened our knowledge of cultural processes occurring in the ear¬
ly Middle Ages, particularly concerning the reality of everyday life. Also a lot of
elements of the symbolic culture became accessible to our cognition due to archae¬
ology, although the Tightness of the proposed interpretations can be most often
doubted to some extent.
The application of new evidence of the past, discovered in the course of exca¬
vations, makes it easier to overcome the hitherto common tendency to perceive the
process of birth of the European civilization through the prism of the Latin West. It
was relatively recently that the researchers began to appreciate also the output of
the Byzantine circle and the importance of the relationships with the Muslim world.
The author is of the opinion that the look at these phenomena from the perspective
of countries situated beyond the former borders of the Roman Empire will signifi¬
cantly widen and deepen the image. Certainly, the main culture-building centres of
early medieval Europe were in the
succesion
lands and the former barbaricum con¬
stituted in fact the periphery of the civilized world. Also there occurred processes
of the basic meaning for the further history of Europe, deciding about the dynamics
and permanence of the changes taking place. Several characteristics which distin¬
guished the societies living there and their culture were going to become the com¬
mon European output within Middle Ages.
Summary
481
The treatise consists of seven parts. In the first one, entitled the Prologue , the
author analyses the main trends in the cultural development of the Europeans from
the agrarian revolution in the Neolithic age to the formation of the division into the
Mediterranean civilized world and barbaricum in the northern part of the continent,
formed at the decline of antiquity. In the second chapter, entitled Breakdown of the
antique world , he presents changes brought about by the fall of the western border
in the fifth century and the symbiosis of barbarians with the people of west provin¬
ces of the Empire. Significant is the proposition of survival created by the East
Roman Empire, crowned with great success in the times of emperor Justinian. It
was shaken, however, by further threats from part of the barbarians and by the deep¬
ening process of acculturation of the newcomers. The Arabic impact in the seventh
century finally caused the unity of the Mediterranean world to collapse, although the
significance of the event for the birth of a new civilization has remained the subject
of discussion.
For the proper evaluation of the turn it is necessary to deepen the knowledge
of changes occurring in the tribal communities of the former barbaricum in the
period between the fifth and the eighth centuries. In chapter III, Barbaricum of the
beginning of the Middle Ages , the author considers characteristics of the culture
distinguishing the German peoples remaining in their central-northern European
cradle. A new, important factor of the changes became agricultural Slavic commu¬
nities living in the mild, forest-field and forest-steppe zone of Central and East Eu¬
rope. In many aspects they were different from the Baits inhabiting the local forest
zone as well as from the Finno-Ugrians inhabiting the zone of forests and taiga
-
further to the north. Quite an important factor in the history of Europe was also
Nomads still flowing in succeeding waves from Asia into the areas situated on the
middle part of the Danube and steppes on the Black and Caspian Seas.
Gradually there were formed new social-cultural structures. The questions are
presented in chapter IV entitled Overcoming the crisis . First, the author deter¬
mines the contribution of the insular, Irish and Anglo-Saxon communities into the
creation of new cultural patterns. However, of the primary importance was the evo¬
lution of relationships in the Merowingian state
-
both the acculturation of former
barbarians and the forming of new ethnic links, with the changes occurring in
Lon¬
gobard
Italy being of considerable significance, too. The crowning of the proces¬
ses was so-called Carolingian renaissance which led to the synthesis of the West
to form the first outline of the Latin cultural circle. Simultaneously in the East the
Byzantine Empire, plunged in a deep crisis up to that moment, began reviving in
a new shape in the ninth century, referring in many aspects to the antique heritage
but different in reference to the basic characteristics of the culture and its ethnic
character.
Thus in Medieval Europe there started creating two different, although both
Christian, cultural circles. In chapter V

the author analyses the strengthening of the Latin links in post-Carolingian states

Summary
in the 9th-! 1th centuries. He discusses in detail the ways of new societies joining
the civilization community: the Slavs and the Hungarians on the middle part of the
Danube, West Slavs between the Elbe and the Vistula rivers and the German in¬
habitants of the Scandinavian Peninsula.
The Byzantine cultural circle strengthened and widened as well. Chapter VI,
entitled Outlines of a new civilization
-
the East , presents the flourishing of By¬
zantium in the period of so-called Macedonian renaissance in the 9th-l 1th centuries.
In that very time the circle of influence of Constantinople embraced Slavic socie¬
ties of the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula. The Christianization of Russia was
of the basic importance as it contributed to the propagation of the Byzantine pat¬
terns of civilization in East Europe, on the Dnieper
und
the upper Volga. In the chap¬
ter there is also considered the importance of the Muslim civilization for the devel¬
opment of medieval Europe, particular attention is being paid to Spain gained to the
Muslim world as well as to the Muslim penetration of the areas on the lower and
middle parts of the Volga river.
The whole treatise is ended with chapter
VII
Final remarks: new Europe .
There the author discusses the question of how homogenous the European civiliza¬
tion created in early Middle Ages was, how important its visible divisions turned
out to be. He reminds that at the decline of antiquity the division into the civilized
South and the barbaric North was quite a new phenomenon for in the prehistoric
times the cultural innovations flowed in from different directions; one of the factors
uniting the continent was, among others, the Indo-European ethnic community go¬
ing back to the decline of the Neolithic age at least. In the early Middle Ages the
opposition between the South and the North broke down due to the process of join¬
ing new peoples to the Christian civilization community being in the process of cre¬
ation. However, the division into the Latin West and the Byzantine East, rooted in
different social-cultural traditions, turned out significant. There also still came into
prominence regional differences determined by different ecological possibilities and
historical traditions of the inhabitants.
In the discussion on the European civilization there is usually stressed its Hel¬
lenic-Roman genealogy. According to the author the look at the whole of the con¬
tinent, possible thanks to the revealing of material evidence of human activity pre¬
served under the ground, testifies to the view being far unilateral. It is worthwhile
to remind that the very kind of social links characteristic of the Middle Ages and
denoted as feudal, became the ground of the European order basing on the tribal
roots. The shape of societies created in Medieval Europe and their cultures were
thus further on determined by experiences gained in course of the past millennia not
only in the Mediterranean South but in the barbaric North as well.
