AMERICAN NATIONAL
LATVIAN LEAGUE, INC.
1918-1968
The years following World War I were scarcely less
difficult for Latvia than war itself. The war, which had
ravaged the fertile land and her people, left in its wake
unemployment, starvation and distress.
It was on September
9, 1918
that the American Na¬
tional Latvian League (ANLL) was organized in the United
States.
Headed by Jacob Sieberg, the ANLL, with headquarters
in Boston, raised money throughout the United States to
send food and clothing to the war-impoverished women and
children in Latvia. The ANLL in Boston was the largest
Latvian organization in the United States with branches in
New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland and Chicago. Through
active participation in national parade and liberty loan
drives, members raised several thousand dollars which they
donated to the suffering inhabitants of their native country
and to the Latvian refugees in far east Vladivostock. Jacob
Sieberg alone, with the aid of his newspaper
Amerikas
Vestnesis, collected and sent
io
the Eighth Latvian Batal-
lion
$997.00,
and a sum of
$1,824.00
to the Latvian Provi¬
sional Government and the first Latvian delegations in
Paris and London.
On May
30, 1921
the League send a special committee
including Jacob Sieberg and Ernests Peterson of Boston to
Washington to plead with President Harding and Senator
119
Henry
Cabot Lodge (Chairman of the Senate Foreign Re¬
lations Committee) to recognize Latvia s
de
jure. They
were aided in their efforts by Rep. Walter M. Chandler
and Senator King of Utah.
Latvia was recognized as a free and independent state
by the United States on July
27, 1922,
together with the
other Baltic states: Estonia, Lithuania, and Albany in the
Balkan region. During this time ANLL discontinued its
branches in Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland
and Suderland, Massachusetts. ANLL was working toward
its goal: sending aid to its homeland while propogating the
idea of a free Latvia.
In Jaunary
1919
the ANLL conducted its first Latvian
Congress in the United States. At this time the central
committee was formed and Mr. Karlis Ozols was elected
representative to the Peace Conference in Paris.
This date marked the entrance of the Latvians as an
organized ethnical group flying Latvia s red-white-red flag.
Their emergence also saw them participating in various
drives, helping the Red Cross, taking part in the American
Making exhibition in New York, etc. The ANLL central
committee in Philadelphia, under the directorship of Dr.
Charles
Roos,
published various informational brochures
about Latvia.
After
1921
ANLL activities continued only in Boston.
Each year members together with other Latvians celebrate
November 18th (Latvia s Independence Day) and pay
tribute to their once free homeland. This tradition contin¬
ued even during the years of the second World War when
Latvia s soil was trampled by her enemies: Communists
and Nacis.
During World War II ANLL appealed to the United
States to aid the Latvian people against the soviet occu¬
pation of their land, and also to establish Latvia s sover¬
eignty in accordance with the principles of the Atlantic
Charter.
120
In
1949
and
1950
new energetic immigrants joined the
League and took over its leadership. These members de¬
clared loyalty to the United States, stood for cooperation
with the other Baltic associations and fought against Lat¬
via s occupation. In
1952,
when ANLL purchased its present
home at
64
Sigourney Street, Jamaica Plain, the house was
used as a blood donation center for the wounded American
soldiers in Korea. Christian Herter, who at that tome was
campaigning for the office of Governor of Massachusetts
and later was Secretary of USA, visited the Latvian home.
ANLL is
a non
profit organization devoted mainly to
cultural and social activities, geared to keep alive the spirit
of a free Latvia. The ANLL is proud of its library, whose
books and references give detailed information dealing with
Latvian life, culture and history. Founded in
1927
it is now
one of the largest Latvian libraries in the free world.
Representing the Latvian spirit in every performance is
the Latvian folk-dance group which uses the League s
house for its rehearsals.
The ANLL is also the home of Latvian School which
was organized in
1951.
Approximately
100-130
students
attend classes which meet once a week each Saturday. Here
Latvian students are taught their native language, history,
geography, religion, folk-songs and dances. From its in¬
ception to
1958,
the school was supported only by the ANLL.
However, since
1958
all Latvian organizations and churches
in Boston take their share in financing the Latvian school.
The Latvian house is also the center of several Latvian
organizations including the Jacob Sieberg Museum, the Lat¬
vian Credit Union, the Latvian Homeowners Society and
Latvian Student Fraternities and Sororities.
Also housed in the ANLL building is a book shop of¬
fering for sale the latest publications in novels, poetry and
history. Every year Latvian artists display their work and
conduct lectures on the newest trends in art.
121
In
1964
the social hall of the ANLL was destroyed by a
fire and the losses incurred were huge. Construction of a
new and larger hall was made possible through donations
and a bank loan.
On May
1st, 1964,
the American Latvian Association in
the United States, Inc. (Washington, D.C.) conducted its
annual Congress in Boston. In recognition of Latvia s fight
for freedom, Mayor John Collins proclaimed that day as
Latvian Day and the red-white-red flag of Latvia flew
over the City Hall. Governor Endicott Peabody and Con¬
gressman Torbert MacDonald were guests of honor in the
Latvian Congress.
In
1963
Jacob Siebrg, the founder of ANLL, died at the
age of
100,
still cherishing the hope that his native land
would once again enjoy its freedom.
Since
1949
there have been several ANLL presidents:
Rev. Oswald Blumit, Dr.
Aleksandre
Grinups,
Mr. Adolfs
Gailitis, Mr. Aleksandrs Cirulis and Mr.
Valdemars Lam¬
bergs.
Through the efforts of the current president, Mr.
Ludvigs
Reiters,
the Latvian Cultural Center and Trust
have been established. At present
Mr. Reiters
is concerned
with plans to purchase or construct a larger building which
will house all Latvian organizations in Boston.
