SUMMARY
In contemporary archeology the Balkan Peninsula is assumed as a cultural cra¬
dle of Old Europe. Millions of years ago, The Balkans were a system of islands
and archipelagos in the Thetis Ocean located between Africa and continental
Europe. With geological changes that took place at that time, the newly formed
Balkan continental land found itself between the Mediterranean Sea on south and
the Panonian Sea on the north. The territory which the present Balkan countries
■
occupy was formed following the flowing off of the Panonian waters into the
Black Sea through the Carpathian Mountains.
The retrieval of the last ice layer from the Middle Danube area some
12000
years ago created favourable conditions for the man s survival. The first fisher¬
men societies, and later of agricultural societies there, developed the culture of
Lepenski
Vir
which is one of the oldest cultural habitats in Europe.
This paper attempts to decipher the onomastics, mythology and pre-history of
the Balkans in a new way using the terms of the Jung s complex psychology, such
as archetype and collective unconsciousness. The Middle Danube onomastics
comprise the hydronyms and the oronyms in compliance with the military plans
of this area.
The ancient Greek language was used in describing the names. Many Greek
and German research reports have commonly found that the Ancient Greek lan¬
guage comprises non-Hellenic substratum allegedly connoted with the indigenous
people of the region. Those researches have revealed the following:
1.
A large number of hydronyms and toponyms from the Balkan Peninsula
belongs to the common and general Balkan paleoglossology from the fam¬
ily of pre-Indo-European languages;
2.
The Danube (personifying Zeus) onomastics with its tributaries and
numerous rivers islands
(ada)
belong to the paleoglossology and represents
the allegory of mythology system found with the theogony of Homer and
Hesoid from the Pantheon of the gods of
Olymp;
3.
The cosmogony of Hesoid symbolizes the eternal struggle of the water
and stone and the interaction
ofthat
process in the human consciousness.
The geophysical fight actually took place between the Panonian Sea and
the Carpathian Rocks and ended by forming the Djerdap-Tartar gorge. The
water gained a victory, i.e. the Danube-Zeus who became a master of all gods;

4.
The greatest fight, however, took place among the gods of the second
and third generation and it was named gigantomachia. It took place in
Serbia, near the Pozarevac Field (Flegreion Pedion). The lightning stroke,
huge rocks were thrown and the trees burned and everything was set on fire
as in hell. It followed that Zeus won his victory;
5.
The onomastics of the Danube Adas (Ada Kale-Eritia, Forkotumac,
Cakljan near Belgrade and others) marks the mythological road sign of
Heracles from the collection of his heroic deeds, as described in the well-
known myth: the stealing of cattle from the Gerion s herd, the capture of
Kerber, the stealing of golden apples from Hesperidia, the fight with
Как
-
god-like monster, and so on;
6.
The onomastics of The Balkans also defines the toponyms of places
where many different Hyperborean tribes lived, such as Dauni, Misani,
Minyces, Lapits, Mosiniks and Kaky. Due to the migrations of the Indo-
European peoples (Dorans, Skyts, Illyrs and others) the
Danubian
inhabi¬
tants migrated from their ancestral lands to the South in
XIII
B.C. That led
to the shifting of the civilization center to the Greek Athens, to the
Macedonian
Pella
and to the Italian boot.
7.
In spite of migrations, the native peoples such as the Old Slovenes from
Central Balkans, together with the Skits, survived and they are a continui¬
ty of the living on these areas and a living testimony to the transfer of
archetypical civilization from generations to generations, exclusively by
spoken word, through centuries.
8.
The paleoglossology of The Balkans belongs to the cultures of Lepenski
Vir, Starčevo,
Vinca,
Karanovo,
Anzabegovo, Dupjak
and Sekslo and it
comes to us since it is preserved in onomastics of these areas in the Ancient
Greek language and in the so called koine Greek language of Alexander
the Great;
9.
The investigations have both anthropology and linguistic aspects. They
go deeply into the roots of pre-historic times of the Balkans where the
human trace is harder to be followed. Nevertheless, the paleoglossology of
The Balkans confirms their high archetypical achievements.
10.
One of the results of the implementation of the paleoglossology of the
Balkans is to reveal the ancient heritage of South Europe. This heritage
brings to light that the Balkan Peninsula is a cultural cradle of Europe. This
also contributes to better understanding of the multicultural coexistence of
the Balkan peoples in ancient times.
