Oscar for lifetime achievement; it was
a controversial award, for in 1

he had
cooperated with the House Committee on
Un-American Activities, for which he was
ostracised by many. Kazan s life and work
in the cinema are due a reassessment
-

that is presented expertly and gracefully
by Brian Neve in this book, drawing on
neglected archive sources, including Kazan s
own papers, and situating Kazan within
the culture and politics of his times.
Kazan s complete film career is examined
here, from A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
(

945)
and his studio apprenticeship, through to the
New York-based films of his own production
company, and to The Lost Tycoon
(

976),
his final film. Neve explores the process
of filmmaking, including censorship issues,
in such films as A Streetcar Named Desire
(

).
He examines Kazan s key artistic
collaborations, including those with Budd
Schulberg
(beginning with On the Waterfront),
Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller, and his
work with actors, such as James Dean and
Marlon Brando, in finding the psychological
centre of his characters. Neve sees a pattern
of personally and socially resonant themes
running through the films, such as the
struggle for identity and the immigrant saga
Kazan was himself a second generation
immigrant of Greek parentage
