ARTISTIC AND DIPLOMATIC
CONTACTS
OF
SIGISMUND III VASA
WITH THE SOUTHERN NETHERLANDS
The reign of King
Sigismund
III was characterized by vitalizing the diplomatic
contacts with the Habsburg s court. The king s connection to the
Habsburg
royal
family was very important. It is worth mentioning the king s two marriages to the
daughters of the Archduke Ferdinand of
Styria.
Sigismund
III married Anna and
after her death, her sister Constance. This connection of the two dynasties and the
same political course in the foreign affairs resulted in an intense diplomatic exchange
with the regents of the Southern Netherlands.
The diplomatic contacts with Brussels were to gain political favour from the
Spanish Habsburgs regarding the Baltic politics and the military supplies for the
Polish army. The supplies from the Archduke Albert and the Infanta Isabella were
going to be used in case of military conflicts with Turkey and Russia. The political
connections also provided a wonderful opportunity of buying works of art.
The aim of this study is to discuss facts on the art collection of King
Sigismund
III
and the marble and other stone trade based on thorough research in the archives of
Brussels, Antwerp, The Hague and Lille. The documents from these archives reveal
unknown facts regarding the painting collection of
Sigismund
III and the stone
transportation. Based on this research we now are able to specify the contacts and
relations between the royal court in Warsaw, Dutch artists and stonemasons at the
beginning of the
XVII
century. The art collection of
Sigismund
III was of high artistic
quality with the paintings of Peter Paula Rubens, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Anton van
Dyck, Jacob
Jordaens
or
Pieter Claesz.
Soutman.
Some works of art were traded to King
Sigismund
through his diplomats. It
transpires that
Piotr
Zerofíski s
diplomatic missions to Brussels, apart from the
political affairs, were the reason for renewing contacts with the Flemish art circles.
His journeys to the Southern Netherlands were significant due to the purchase of
arms but his name is also connected with purchases of some tapestries and outstand¬
ing paintings.

SUMMARY
Also merchants were involved in trade of works of art for the Sigismund s
collection, just to mention Hendricks Uylenburgh and Daniel Coppens. Still a sig¬
nificant number of paintings were traded to Warsaw by the artists themselves
Шее
Jan Brueghel the Elder.
The Sigismund s art collection was impressive: it is worth mentioning
100
paint¬
ings bought by Hendricks Uylenburgh in
1619
to the royal gallery of the main
Warsaw residence. This purchase included
16
religious paintings,
16
mythological,
10
landscapes,
6
still lifes,
4
battle scenes, etc. Moreover, we still do not know how
many paintings were purchased by Daniel Coppens, and how many Jan Brueghel the
Elder traded to Warsaw. According to the Brueghel s letter to the cardinal Borro-
mée
from
29.10.1621
there were a lot of paintings purchased by
Sigismund
III
( molti
Picture
al. Re ).
The purchase of the paintings from the southern Netherlands for the royal court
in Warsaw was linked with the restoration of the main royal residence. The main
focus of the restoration was on the private rooms of the king. It is believed that
during the reconstruction of the royal palace in Warsaw, the private gallery was
situated in the north wing of the palace. The king s private collection consisted of
portraits of
Sigismund
III and Ladislaus
Sigismund
done by most likely some artist
from the Rubens studio in Antwerp. These portraits, purchased by Daniel Cop¬
pens, were placed next to the portraits of the kings and princes from the Jagiello-
nian dynasty. The collection mainly consisted of religious paintings where the most
striking example would be Madonna by Brueghel and Rubens bought in
1619.
It is
also believed that there was another masterpiece in the royal chapel: the Descent
from the Cross by Rubens purchased by
Piotr Żeroński
in
1621.
This panting was
then offered to the Saint Nicholas church in
Kalisz.
Finally, among the religious arts,
it is worth mentioning the twelve apostles busts by Anton van Dycke purchased by
Hedrick Uylenburgh in
1619.
Moreover, the king s collection consisted of land¬
scapes and still lifes
-
allegories based on the Greek mythology. There were also
scenes of the major cities of Poland and busts of
12
roman
emperors, Duodedm
Imperatorem.
It is worth mentioning that tapestries from the Southern Netherlands were a very
important part of the royal chambers of King
Sigismund
III. Also, the king inherited
a wonderful collection of arras from the Jagielkmian dynasty and brought many
series of tapestries from Sweden as a family heirloom.
The art collection of
Sigismund
III should be considered equal to the one of
Rudolf II in Prague. It might have made a great impression; artistically balanced,
with the works of art from great painters and sculptors, and in addition with many
artistic works of interesting, intriguing or historical character.
A very particular attention was drawn to the stay in Poland of
Pieter Claesz.
Soutman, a co-worker of Rubens. It was thought that the arrival of the artists to
Warsaw took place in
1624
in order to do the portrait of the royal family:
Sigismund
III, Queen Constance of Austria and Prince Ladislaus
Sigismund Vasa.
The archive
documents

Brussels show the consistency to the arrival date but not when he set
out from Warsaw and what was the purpose of Soutmans work. It is strongly

believed that the portraits were going to be kept in the Great Gallery of the Cou-
denberg Palace in Brussels and not left in Warsaw.
Now a lot is known, also based on the research in the archives of Brussels and
The Hague, of the trade and transportation of the stone needed to fulfil the election
promises of King
Sigismund
III. The stone traded from the Southern Netherlands as
well as from Italy was used to build or rebuild castles and fortresses all over the
country. The transportation of the stone was divided into two stages: by the sea to
Gdansk and then by rivers and channels to Warsaw, Vilnius and other places.
Dutch stonemasons, some of them living in Poland, some from the Netherlands,
did the trade in stone from
1619
to
1629
for
Sigismund
ΠΙ.
Part of the traded marble
was used to finish the chapel of Saint
Casimir
in Vilnius. The chapel was thought to
be a family monument showing links between
Vasa
and Jagiellonian dynasties.
During the reign of King
Sigismund
III indeed the artistic and diplomatic con¬
tacts with the Southern Netherlands were vitalized and strengthened. The research
in the archives of the Southern Netherlands shows
Sigismund
III a great art collector
who purchased many wonderful works of art to Warsaw, established collaboration
with many great artists and traded plenty of marble and other stone to build and
finish castles and fortresses in Poland.
