Zusammenfassung: | "Based on research and interviews that span three continents, this book tells the entwined histories of an illusive life and a famous icon. In doing so, the book raises questions about the possibilities and limits of biography for understanding those who live between and among different cultures." "In reconstructing Sara Baartman's life, the book traverses the South African frontier and its genocidal violence, cosmopolitan Cape Town, the ending of the slave trade, the Industrial Revolution, the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, London and Parisian high society, and the rise of racial science. The authors discuss the ramifications of discovering that when Baartman went to London, she was older than originally assumed, and they explore the enduring impact of the Hottentot Venus on ideas about women, race, and sexuality. The book concludes with the politics involved in returning Baartman's remains to her home country, and connects Baartman's story to her descendants in nineteenth- and twentieth-century South Africa."--BOOK JACKET. |

"In reconstructing Sara Baartman's life, the book traverses the South African frontier and its genocidal violence, cosmopolitan Cape Town, the ending of the slave trade, the Industrial Revolution, the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, London and Parisian high society, and the rise of racial science. The authors discuss the ramifications of discovering that when Baartman went to London, she was older than originally assumed, and they explore the enduring impact of the Hottentot Venus on ideas about women, race, and sexuality. The book concludes with the politics involved in returning Baartman's remains to her home country, and connects Baartman's story to her descendants in nineteenth- and twentieth-century South Africa."--BOOK JACKET.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Baartman, Sarah</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Baartman, Sarah</subfield><subfield code="d">1789-1815</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)122834879</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="9">rswk-swf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Geschichte 1800-1900</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Ethik</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Geschichte</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Women, Khoikhoi</subfield><subfield code="v">Biography</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Women, Khoikhoi</subfield><subfield code="z">Europe</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">19th century</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Women, Khoikhoi</subfield><subfield code="z">Europe</subfield><subfield code="x">Social conditions</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Racism in museum exhibits</subfield><subfield code="z">Europe</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">19th century</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Museum exhibits</subfield><subfield code="x">Moral and ethical aspects</subfield><subfield code="z">Europe</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Exploitation</subfield><subfield code="z">Europe</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">19th century</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Europa</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="0">(DE-588)4006804-3</subfield><subfield code="a">Biografie</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd-content</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Baartman, Sarah</subfield><subfield code="d">1789-1815</subfield><subfield code="0">(DE-588)122834879</subfield><subfield code="D">p</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="689" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="5">DE-604</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Scully, Pamela</subfield><subfield code="e">Verfasser</subfield><subfield code="4">aut</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="2"><subfield code="m">HBZ Datenaustausch</subfield><subfield code="q">application/pdf</subfield><subfield code="u">http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=016703390&sequence=000004&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA</subfield><subfield code="3">Inhaltsverzeichnis</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="999" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">oai:aleph.bib-bvb.de:BVB01-016703390</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="942" ind1="1" ind2="1"><subfield code="c">306.09</subfield><subfield code="e">22/bsb</subfield><subfield code="f">09034</subfield><subfield code="g">6</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="942" ind1="1" ind2="1"><subfield code="c">306.09</subfield><subfield code="e">22/bsb</subfield><subfield code="f">09033</subfield><subfield code="g">4</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="942" ind1="1" ind2="1"><subfield code="c">305.309</subfield><subfield code="e">22/bsb</subfield><subfield code="f">09033</subfield><subfield code="g">6</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="942" ind1="1" ind2="1"><subfield code="c">306.09</subfield><subfield code="e">22/bsb</subfield><subfield code="f">09034</subfield><subfield code="g">4</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="942" ind1="1" ind2="1"><subfield code="c">306.09</subfield><subfield code="e">22/bsb</subfield><subfield code="f">09033</subfield><subfield code="g">6</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="942" ind1="1" ind2="1"><subfield code="c">305.309</subfield><subfield code="e">22/bsb</subfield><subfield code="f">09034</subfield><subfield code="g">6</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

In doing so, the book raises questions about the possibilities and limits of biography for understanding those who live between and among different cultures."
