The book entitled Solemn Royal Entries to Wroclaw in the years
1527-
1620
describes a somewhat forgotten aspect of the Silesian history in the
time period when it belonged to the
Habsburg
monarchy
-
that is
Wrocław
being visited by Bohemian kings. These visits were related to the accep¬
tance of the homage of Silesia by a new sovereign. This important for
a region privilege
—
taking an oath of loyalty to the sovereign on the proper
land
-
shown rank of Silesia, as well as
Wrocław
as its capital.
Royal entries to Wroclaw were festivals of a great importance and for
that reason they had a rich ceremonial, visual, musical and literary setting.
This topic wasn t subjected to cross-sectional scientific research. Some
detailed studies and mentions presented in the research status review can t
replace a comprehensive formulation of the subject of solemn royal entries
and their setting.
Present work is aimed at presenting historical events and showing their
social and political meaning, as well as their influence on culture related
to occasional artistic creation. Monarchal entry is a ceremony with a long
and rich tradition that is discussed in the second chapter of this book.
Cultural view of this special kind of festivals allows one to understand
the importance of the elements of the ceremony described in the detailed
chapters of this book.
The third chapter sketches a historical background and meaning of royal
entries in Silesia. Considering the visits that took place between
XIV
and
the first half of the
XVIII
century, it presents the gradual establishing of
their typical course and the main place of the homage, which Wroclaw
became.
The monarchal visits in Silesia were related to the act of reception of
homage and had a special meaning, because they took place during dy¬
namic political and constitutional transformations. As those were the days
when state affiliations of particular territories of Silesia were changing
and, as a result, the over-200-years period of the
Habsburg
dynasty reign
came. The date ending the events described it this book is the year
1620
when the Bohemian sovereign came to Wroclaw to receive the homage for
the last time. Thirty Years War and later years weakened the political posi¬
tion of Silesia in the
Habsburg
monarchy. Prussian reign since
1740
has
restored the tradition of personal visits of the sovereigns in Wroclaw.

Detailed chapters describe particular entries starting with some short
information about circumstances of assumption of power by the new sov¬
ereign. Afterwards they present historical information considering prepara¬
tions for the visit, its course and role in politics of the region and town. The
third component of those chapters is a description and interpretation of the
meaning of the solemn entries setting, with a special attention to artistic
works such as occasional decorations and ephemeral architecture. Ex¬
amples

Das Buch Festliche Einzüge von Monarchen in Breslau in den Jahren 1527-
1620 behandelt einen eher vergessenen Aspekt schlesischer Geschichte in
der Habsburger Zeit und zwar Besuche von böhmischen Königen in Breslau.
Sie waren jeweils mit der Entgegennahme der schlesischen Huldigung durch
den seine Macht antretenden Monarchen verbunden. Dieses für die Region
wichtige Privileg, das Treuegelöbnis nicht in der Residenzstadt Wien bzw.
Prag, sondern auf eigenem Territorium ablegen zu dürfen, zeugte von hohem
Rang Schlesiens, zugleich aber auch seiner Hauptstadt Breslau.
Die Breslauer Einzüge galten als äußerst bedeutende Feiern, daher wur¬
den sie auch entsprechend gestaltet: es handelte sich um festliche Zeremo¬
nien mit künstlerischer, musikalischer und literarischer Begleitung. Diese
äußerst interessante Problematik wurde bisher in der Forschungsliteratur
lediglich punktue]] behandelt. Die vorhandenen, im Kapitel Forschungs¬
stand besprochenen detaillierten Analyseng wurden jetzt also um eine um¬
fassende, synthetisch-systematische Darstellung des Themas ergänzt.
Diese Arbeit will nicht nur bestimmte historische Ereignisse in ihrer
gesellschaftlichen und politischen Bedeutung analysieren, sondern auch
deren kulturbildende Funktion nachweisen. Es handelt sich dabei um ver¬
schiedene Formen künstlerischer Aktivitäten, die bei Gelegenheit von
königlichen Einzügen unternommen wurden. Der Einzug des Monarchen
ist eine Feier, die auf eine lange Tradition zurückblicken kann. Sie ist
Gegenstand der Untersuchung im zweiten Kapitel dieses Buches. Die Ver¬
fasserin lenkt hier ihre Aufmerksamkeit auf den Einzug des Machthabers
als ein besonderes Kulturphänomen.

tergrand und die politische Relevanz von königlichen Einzügen in Schlesi¬
en. Analysiert werden Visiten, die vom 14. bis Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts
abgestattet wurden: die Autorin zielt dabei darauf ab, einen typischen
Ablauf von derartigen Feiern zu rekonstruieren, sowie den Weg Breslaus
zum Schauplatz von Huldigungsfesten nachzuzeichnen. In Schlesien spiel¬
ten die mit der Huldigung verbundenen Aufenthalte von Monarchen eine
durchaus große Rolle, da sie mit dynamischen politischen, kulturellen und
konfessionellen Wandlungen einhergingen.
In dieser Zeit kam es doch zu einschneidenden Veränderungen im
Bereich staatlicher Zugehörigkeit des Landes: für über 200 Jahre fiel

Schlesien unter die Herrschaft der Habsburger. Eine Zäsur stellt dabei
das Jahr 1620 dar: zum letzten Mal erschien ein in der Böhmischen Krone
herrschender König in Breslau und nahm die Huldigung entgegen. Der
Dreißigjährige Krieg und die Zeit danach brachten eine Abschwächung
der politischen Rolle Schlesiens in der Habsburger Monarchie. Die Rück¬
kehr zu einer bewährten Tradition von persönlichen Visiten der Herrscher
zwecks Entgegennahme von Huldigungen in Breslau erfolgte erst in der
preußischen Periode der schlesischen Geschichte, also ab 1741.
Die folgenden Kapitel untersuchen die einzelnen Einzüge. Auf eine
schlichte Information über die Umstände der jeweiligen Machtergreifung
folgt eine detaillierte Schilderung der Vorbereitungen und des Ablaufs
der Visite; anschließend wird ihre Rolle für die Politik der Region und
der Stadt untersucht. Abgeschlossen werden die einzelnen Abschnitte mit
der Beschreibung und Interpretation der programmatischen Gestaltung
einzelner Feiern. Gegenstand der Untersuchung sind vor allem Darbie¬
tungen bildender Künstler, insbesondere Gelegenheitsdekorationen, sowie
Gelegenheitsarchitektur, hier vor allem die kaum beständigen Ehrenpfor¬
ten. Diese vom Rat der Stadt Breslau fundierten Objekte stellten jeweils
Kulminationspunkte der künstlerischen Gestaltung der Feiern dar. Mit
ihrem umfangreichen Wort-Bild-Programm sollten sie auch eine wohl
überlegte Ideenbotschaft vermitteln, und dies sowohl dem König als auch
seinen Unteitanen.

bzw. Winterkönig. Die Ereignisse von 1619-1620 brachten bekannt¬
lich einschneidende Veränderungen in der Geschichte der Böhmischen
Krone. Die Macht der Stände wurde gebrochen, es kamen Zentralismus
und kaiserlicher Katholizismus zu Wort. Schlesien, obwohl nicht aller
alten Privilegien beraubt, fiel bei den Habsburger Herrschern in Ungnade.
Die Zeit der königlich-böhmischen Einzüge in die Odermetropole war
somit zu Ende.

Schlesien unter die Herrschaft der Habsburger. Eine Zäsur stellt dabei
das Jahr 1620 dar: zum letzten Mal erschien ein in der Böhmischen Krone
herrschender König in Breslau und nahm die Huldigung entgegen. Der
Dreißigjährige Krieg und die Zeit danach brachten eine Abschwächung
der politischen Rolle Schlesiens in der Habsburger Monarchie. Die Rück¬
kehr zu einer bewährten Tradition von persönlichen Visiten der Herrscher
zwecks Entgegennahme von Huldigungen in Breslau erfolgte erst in der
preußischen Periode der schlesischen Geschichte, also ab 1741.
Die folgenden Kapitel untersuchen die einzelnen Einzüge. Auf eine
schlichte Information über die Umstände der jeweiligen Machtergreifung
folgt eine detaillierte Schilderung der Vorbereitungen und des Ablaufs
der Visite; anschließend wird ihre Rolle für die Politik der Region und
der Stadt untersucht. Abgeschlossen werden die einzelnen Abschnitte mit
der Beschreibung und Interpretation der programmatischen Gestaltung
einzelner Feiern. Gegenstand der Untersuchung sind vor allem Darbie¬
tungen bildender Künstler, insbesondere Gelegenheitsdekorationen, sowie
Gelegenheitsarchitektur, hier vor allem die kaum beständigen Ehrenpfor¬
ten. Diese vom Rat der Stadt Breslau fundierten Objekte stellten jeweils
Kulminationspunkte der künstlerischen Gestaltung der Feiern dar. Mit
ihrem umfangreichen Wort-Bild-Programm sollten sie auch eine wohl
überlegte Ideenbotschaft vermitteln, und dies sowohl dem König als auch
seinen Unteitanen.
Das Buch bespricht sechs Einzüge, fünf davon von Vertretern der

bzw. Winterkönig. Die Ereignisse von 1619-1620 brachten bekannt¬
lich einschneidende Veränderungen in der Geschichte der Böhmischen
Krone. Die Macht der Stände wurde gebrochen, es kamen Zentralismus
und "kaiserlicher Katholizismus" zu Wort. Schlesien, obwohl nicht aller
alten Privilegien beraubt, fiel bei den Habsburger Herrschern in Ungnade.
Die Zeit der königlich-böhmischen Einzüge in die Odermetropole war
somit zu Ende. |
