Most scholarship about Cuba s religious
traditions has focused on research conducted
in the western provinces, in or near the cities of
Havana,
Matanzas,
Trinidad, Cienfuegos, and
so on. A great deal of this material is concerned
with Cuba s black population and their Africa-
based behaviors. Few, if any, of these writings,
however, have included research conducted in
the eastern region known as
Oriente.
Significantly, while there is considerable
literature published in English about one of
Cuba s popular religions,
Regla de Ocha
or
Santería,
there is a dearth of English-language
literature on others, as expressed in
Oriente.
Sacred Spaces and Religious Traditions in
Oriente
Cuba is a compilation often years ot research
by lualynne Dodson and the African Atlantic
Research Team as they explored tour of the lesser
known traditions: Palo Monte/Palo Mayombe,
Vodú, Espiritismo,
and
Muertéra
Bembe
de Sao.
Most previously published work about
Palo Monte/Palo Mayombe is in Spanish and
tends not to give conceptual emphasis but
instead descriptively explores ritual details
in generalized categories or particularized
activities. The nganga—the cast-iron caldron
—
Continued on buck flap
where essential sacred elements of the
religion are kept—is a frequent locus ot such
discussions but no literature has been found that
conceptually engages the nganga or Palo Monte/
Palo Mayombe in their fullest historical and
sociocultural
presence in
Oriente.
More published literature does exist on
the
Vodou
of Haiti, but little, if any, quantity of
materials can be found on the
Vodú
of Cuba
in either English or Spanish. Even Cuban
scholars have failed to tocus on the tradition
in their homeland, partly because the strongest
communities of
Vodú
practitioners arrived in
Oriente
and continue to remain most active in
these eastern portions of the island, while Cuban
scholarship has derived mainly from a western
(Havana) emphasis.
Published works on Cuban
Espiritismo
are
almost exclusively limited to Spanish, and no
publications can be found in Spanish or English
about
Muertéra Bembé de Sao.
Sacred Spaces and
Religious Traditions in
Oriente
Cuba provides
previously unexplored insights into this tradition
and, it is hoped, will provide a foundation for
further examination by the academic community.
