Zusammenfassung:"Lavishly produced, heavy (about 5 kg), with lots of white space, including an excessive number of blank pages, this large format (263x216 mm) book treats all 250 native and naturalized tree, shrub, and woody-vine species in Minnesota, respectively, 92/9, 131/5, 12/1 native/naturalized species. These 250 species occur in 86 genera, the largest being Rubus (33 species), Salix (20), Crataegus (9), Ribes (9), Amelanchier (8), and Prunus (7). The extensive preliminaries discuss environmental and distributional factors, offer 5 color and 19 B&W maps, and end with a 7-page key to the 86 genera. The 681-page taxonomic part is alphabetically arranged (Abies balsamea-Zanthoxylum americanum). The genera receive summaries and, if relevant, keys to component species. Each species is mapped (counties of Minnesota plus states and/or provinces) and described on a verso and illustrated on the facing recto with attractive drawings (100+) by Vera Ming Wong and many (1000+) color photos. For instance, Diervilla, Dirca, Empetrum, and Epigaea each get four pages: page 1 with a photo and single paragraph on the genus, page 2 blank, pages 3-4 on, respectively, D. lonicera, D. palustris, E. eamesii subsp. atropurpureum, and E. repens, whereas the intervening Elaeagnus gets six pages: page 1 with a photo, a single paragraph on the genus, and a key to its two species, page 2 blank, pages 3-6 on E. angustifolia and E. commutata. To tallyho: The five genera and six species take up 22 pages, including 5 pages blank and 5 pages 50% or less full. That is why this work is so heavy and has so many pages (681) for 250 species. Nevertheless, the book is beautifully done. Sadly, many of the color photos are rather soft focus and most are rather low contrast." -- Rudolf Schmid in Taxon.
