Media
and communication processes are central to how we come to know and understand the
environment as well as how environmental problems are defined, contested, addressed and
responded to. Environment, Media and Communication examines the central role played by media
and communication processes in shaping public debate and understanding concerning the
environment.
The first part of the book introduces a general framework for studying and understanding the role
of media and communication in relation to environmental issues. It proceeds with an examination
of the main players and forums in public communication about the environment. First, this focuses
on the strategies and influence of key stakeholders in environmental debate and controversy.
Second, it examines how news values, organisational arrangements and objectives of the media,
and the practices of journalists and other media professionals impinge on the framing and
communication of environmental issues. The next section introduces research on popular culture
images of science, nature and the environment and their history and inflection across a range of
media forms, including those of film and advertising. This section discusses how deep-seated
cultural narratives have reflected, and in turn shaped, particular ideological interpretations of
nature and the environment. The final part of the book discusses the major frameworks which have
been used for examining media influence on public understanding, public opinion and political
decision-making, and it concludes by pointing to the communication models which have most to
offer in terms of explaining media and communication roles in relation to the environment.
This book offers a comprehensive introduction to theoretical approaches and models for the study
of media and communication roles regarding the environment, drawing on empirical research
evidence and examples from Europe, America, Australia and Asia. The book will be of interest to
students in media/communication studies, geography, environmental studies, political science and
sociology as well as to environmental professionals and activists.
