AN OAK SPRING HERBARIA Herbs and Herbais from the Fourteenth to the Nineteenth Centuries HIS authoritative and magnificently illus trated book on herbais is the fourth vol ume in a remarkable series of catalogues that describes rare books, manuscripts, and othe works of art conserved at the Oak Spring Garden Library, Upperville, Virginia, a collection formed over many years by Rachel Lambert Mellon. Pre viously published volumes include An Oak Spring Sylva on trees, An Oak Spring Pomona on fruit, and An Oak Spring Flora on flowers. For An Oak Spring Herbaria, the author has se lected sixty-three works from the Library’s exten sive collections. The volume is thematically orga nized and arranged into the following chapters : ‘Late Medieval Herbais’; ‘The Great Age of Re naissance Botany’;‘Herbais and Plants from Distant Lands’; ‘Herbais by Herbalists, Pharmacists, and Physicians’; ‘Herbais of the Botanical Gardens and Private Gardens of Europe’; ‘Curious and Strange Herbais’; ‘Dried Specimens and Nature Printing’; and ‘American Herbais.’ In her introduction the author provides insight into the early history of the herbal, explaining in depth its creation, development, and use. The cata logue surveys the herbal down through the nine teenth century, with detailed entries from manu script herbais to editions of the Hortus Sanitatis, The Grete Herball, Brunfels, Fuchs, Mattioli, Turner, Clusius, Dodoens, Culpeper, Durante, Alpini, Monardes, della Porta, Linnaeus, among others, and in cluding such Amercian herbais as those of Jacob Bigelow and C. S. Rafmesque. This
