This book is an introduction to math¬
ematical game theory, which might better
be called the mathematical theory of
conflict and cooperation. It is applicable
whenever two individuals
—
or com¬
panies, or political parties, or nations
—
confront situations where the outcome for
each depends on the behavior of all. What
are the best strategies in such situations?
If there are chances of cooperation, with
whom should you cooperate, and how
should you share the proceeds of co¬
operation?
Since its creation by John
von
Neumann
and
Oskar Morgenstern in 1944,
game
theory has shed new light on business,
politics, economics, social psychology,
philosophy, and evolutionary biology. In
this book, its fundamental ideas are devel¬
oped with mathematics at the level of high
school algebra and applied to many of
these fields (see the table of contents).
Ideas like "fairness" are presented via
axioms that fair allocations should satisfy;
thus the reader is introduced to axiomatic
thinking as well as to mathematical mod¬
eling of actual situations.
Philip Straffin received his B.A.
magna
cum
laude
from Harvard in
1965,
studied
at Cambridge (Marshall Scholarship),
where he performed with distinction on
the Tripos exams, and received his Ph.D.
from Berkeley in
1971.
His mathematical
versatility is reflected in the range of his
publications: on algebraic topology, dy¬
namical systems, mathematical model¬
ing, game theory, and the theory of voting.
He is Professor of Mathematics at Beloit
College, where he has been since
1970,
chairing the Department of Mathematics
and Computer Science from
1980
to
1990.
He has coached Meritorious and Out¬
standing teams in COMAP's Competi¬
tion in Modeling. His extraordinary
teaching talents have been recognized by
such awards as Beloit College's Teacher
of the Year
(1975),
MAA's Allendoerfer
Award
(1985),
and MAA's Award for
Distinguished College Teaching of Math¬
ematics
(1993).
Professor Straffin's combination of
talents and interests
—
research and ap¬
plication-oriented (acutely aware of con¬
nections with current phenomena),
pedagogical, expository, collaborative
—
have made him one of the leading figures
among reformers of undergraduate math¬
ematics education. His edited collection
Applications of Calculus appeared in
MAA's Resources for Calculus in
