ABSTRACT
The work performed within the framework of a project supported by the Federal German Ministry for
Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in
accordance with Agreement PN 8370 and its extension N° 1995.2235.0 is described. The project was carried out
at the Centro de Investigaci6n y Transferencia en Aciistica (CINTRA, Centre for Research and Transfer in
Acoustics) at the National Technical University - Regional Faculty of C6rdoba - Argentina and was intended to
fulfil basic needs of that country in the field of audiology as regards measurement and calibration procedures and
their application in compliance with the requirements of national and international standards. For this purpose,
modern acoustic equipment was procured, the knowledge and implementation of the latest international
standards applicable in the field of audiology were updated, human resources trained , and reference values for
thresholds of hearing traceable to international standards were made available. These metrological audiological
procedures were transferred to the Argentinean community through the establishment of a Calibration Centre at
the CINTRA. At the same time, measurement models were applied to study a current problem in the field of
hearing conservation related to the high percentage of young people in C6rdoba suffering from hearing losses
already at the beginning of their working life, which probably are to be attributed to the exposure to non-
occupational noise. The study, designed as a field test with maximum control of the variables, was focussed on
