Summary
The rebuilding of Warsaw also included the efforts to restore the capital city to its former glory
and its due place on the cultural map of the country. Despite huge losses among the Polish intelligent¬
sia, general pauperisation and pervasive poverty, the efforts were crowned with success. At the turn
of the
1940s
and
1950s
Warsaw once again became a centre of Polish culture.
Also the army contributed to the restoration of Warsaw as cultural centre. The military animators
of cultural life were both from regular formations and partisan ones. Among theme were the officers
of the Second Republic of Poland, those who fought in the September Campaign of
1939,
those who
were in German
Oflag
camps, fought in the resistance movement or on the Eastern Front with the
Polish Army. There were employed civilian performers and artists, well-known and liked. It was even
more justifiable in that that the level of professional performance of the members of military artistic
teams was extremely varied. Thus the artistic achievements of the officers with a few years period of
their artistic activity in the Oflags, and skills and experience of former members of artistic groups of
the First and Second Polish Army, should be emphasised even more strongly.
The knowledge and experience of pre-war employees were used also to reconstruct Warsaw librar¬
ies and museums. Naturally enough, they referred to familiar and tested organisational models and
solutions of the Second Polish Republic, making use of them in the latter part of the
1940s.
Gathering people of various background and with different experiences, cultural institutions fre¬
quently bridged a gap between the recent past and present of the armed forces. This, however,
changed due to voluntary resignation from the service in the army and repressive policy of the military
authorities.
The continuity is documented, in its material dimension, by the buildings reconstructed by the
Army and hosting main cultural institutions of the Polish Army.
Organisational model of these institutions anticipated the presentation of a wide variety of per¬
formances. In the Central Soldier s House
(Centralny Dom Żołnierza
-
CDŻ)
there were: symphony
orchestra, ballet, choir, and also soloists
-
vocalists and acting team. Performances in the Polish Army
House
(Dom Wojska Polskiego
-
DWP) included: symphony orchestra, choir, ballet, and groups of
soloists, however without actors performing for the
CDŻ.
In the first half of
1947
r. there was a Musi¬
cal Theatre of the DWP, and at the end of the analysed period, in December
1949,
there was an open¬
ing of a newly organised troupe
-
Travelling Dramatic Theatre of the DWP.
A synthetic assessment of various artistic teams forming the Central Soldier s House, and then
Polish Army House is not easy
-
for obvious reasons. Judging from the press reviews, they were gener¬
ally up to scratch, which does not imply that there were no unsuccessful shows and performances. There
were, however, also those which were really worthy of the name of artistic achievement (as, for in¬
stance, ballet triptych
Gioconda ,
Janko
muzykant
[Yanko the Musician] and
Wesele
na
wsi [A
Country Wedding]).
The audience was attracted by musical matinees, concerts of the symphony orchestra of the
CDŻ
and performances of the Representative Orchestra of the Polish Army. Also choir and symphony or-

Summary
diestra
of the DWP were met with praise. Musicians and vocalists were popularised and distinguished
by their performances in radio broadcasts in Poland and abroad, considerably broadening the audi¬
ence
The audience of military artistic teams was systematically increasing, and by the end of analysed
period it could be described as the mass audience. The performance were received with a variety of
reactions, from hostility to applause. Propaganda was offensive and didacticism excessive. Most suc¬
cessful were Polish folk songs and national dances.
Among the central cultural institutions of the Polish Army, associated with Warsaw, there are also
-
apart from the Polish Army House
-
Central Military Library
(Centralna Biblioteka Wojskowa
-
CBW) and Museum of the Polish Army.
The building of the CBW was bombarded and demolished in September
1939.
The collection of
the library, being an important part of the cultural legacy of the Second Polish Republic, was almost
totally burned to ashes. The first works to re-establish the library were undertaken already at the time
of war.
The reconstruction of military museums collections began soon after the left-bank Warsaw area
was seized, in mid-January
1945.
The building of the Military Museum survived, although was scarred
by war, and the process of restoration of the museum was joined by its pre-war personnel, effectively
assisted by new employees.
Financial means allocated to the museum by the military authorities allowed to finish the main
repairing works before the winter of
1945-1946.
At the same time a significant part of the collection
taken away by the German occupier was successfully repossessed and the
militaria
left by the enemy
were confiscated. All this allowed the Museum of Polish Army- as the first museum in destroyed War¬
saw- to organise a permanent exposition open to the public on January
20,1946,
that is less than nine
moths after the end of the war in Europe. The repossession action ended in
1954.
It is estimated that
ca.
75
percent of the collections seized by the Nazi were recovered. The museum collection was en¬
larged by donations, purchases, acquisitions of former estate manors collections. By the end of
1947
and at the beginning of
1948
the museum inventory included over
50 000
items.
In
1949
the museum was visited by almost
200 000
visitors, thus already then it was an important
centre of historic education on a nationwide scale, documenting a thousand years tradition of Polish
arms and acquainting with military history of other nations and civilisations, despite forced concession
to the state authorities on the Polish-Soviet relations and the recent military history.
