Summary/
181
At the time of the Nazi occupation, the area,
which today is called the
Rzeszów
Region or
south-east Poland, was assigned to the three
administrative districts of
Generalne Gubernatorstwo
(Generalgouvernement -
GG)*
that was the
Kraków
District and the Lublin District, and from
1941
a part
of this region was also included in the
Galicja
District.
From the beginning of September
1939,
when the
area of present south-east Poland was invaded by the
German army, the operational police group of the
security and security service under
SS-Brigadeführer
Bruno
Streckenbach
s
command, the ordeal of Polish
citizens of Jewish extraction began. During this mili¬
tary occupation (from 1st September till 26th October
1939)
at least
1200
Jews were murdered in the area of
the present
Podkarpackie
Province.
Information on the atrocities and slaughters com¬
mitted on civilians by the
Wehrmacht
and the Security
police groups meant that some of the Jews searching
for a chance to survive the Nazi occupation tried to
escape eastwards.
The invaders did not object to the fact that
so many Jews left the area of the
Rzeszów
Region and
headed for the East.
The number of Jews who decided to leave was too
low in proportion to the expectations of the Nazi
authorities. That is why in many places throughout the
Rzeszów
Region, decrees were given for all Jewish
inhabitants to leave their residences. At the end of
September
1939
the cruelty of the action of removing
Jews intensified. The Jews were driven behind the
River San, which was the border river at the time. The
inhabitants of the following powiats**: JaroslawsM, a
part of
powiat Sanocki
and
Tarnobrzeski,
also the left
bank part of
Przemyśl
were treated this way.
In general, about
21400
people were displaced
from the
Rzeszów
Region to behind the German and
Russian demarcation
Ľne
in September and October
1939.
Later part of these people returned to the
German zone.
In the
Rzeszów
Region, like in other areas of the
Kraków
District, through the whole time of the occu¬
pation, Jews were used as a labour force. From the
very first weeks the Jews were forced to do often the
most humiliating work, unpaid.
While doing it they were beaten and humiliated,
the supervising SS-men disposed of the lives of their
subject workers freely. Officially, the Jews from the
GG were compelled to work by the decree from 26th
October
1939
and executive regulations from 11th and
12th December
1939.
The forced labour was quickly
changed into slave labour, which was used in places of
residence and labour camps, which were organized in
south-east Poland, mainly between
1940
and
1942.
In the eastern part of the
Kraków
District at the time
of Nazi occupation,
22
camps were established where
the Jews were used for slave labour. They differed as
regards the kinds of work performed (building and
renewing routes, building fortifications, working in
industry and agriculture), living conditions, number of
prisoners (from several hundred to several thousands)
and regime.
The camps were one of the elements of extermi¬
nation through destructive work, unsanitary living
conditions and hunger.
Throughout the
Rzeszów
Region the first forced
labour camps for the Jews were established in con¬
nection with the building on the new German-Russian
border. The camps were, among others, in
Cieszanów,
Dzików Stary, Lipsk, Narol, Płazów.
There were
8000
Jewish prisoners altogether,
40
percent of them died.
The camp in
Pusťków
near
Dębica
was the biggest
centre of forced labour with military functions out of
the areas mentioned. Within
2
years out of the
14 000
prisoners half were murdered.
Apart from the camps that were established by the
police and army, civil administration also started to
organize centres of this kind. Many camps were situ¬
ated by existing factories or in the areas where
German companies explored natural resources: in Jed-
licze, Stalowa Wola,
Huta
Komorowska, Biesiadka.
In the labour camps organized in Cyranka,
Dębniki, Dukla, Głogów Małopolski and Tarnobrzeg
the Jews worked on road building.
Szebnie were the second biggest labour camp in
the
Rzeszów
Region after
Pustków.
It was established
in
1943,
in the autumn of that year there were about
3500
people imprisoned out of which
1200
died.
From the middle of
1941
a systematic and orga¬
nized extermination practice against the Jews was
started in the eastern part of the
Kraków
District.
Instructions concerning the Jews were prepared in
Berlin. The plan of action provided the final objective
and the stages leading to it. They consisted of destroy¬
ing the economic status of the Jews pushing them into
the margins of social and economic life and isolating
them from other inhabitants. The next stage leading to
the „final solution of the Jewish issue (meaning: the

physical extermination) was the concentration of the
Jews in isolated quarters of town, commonly named
„ghettos . In this way the Jews were concentrated and
confined to one place and became an easy target for
any kind of repressions, and further, the action of
extermination.
In the
Rzeszów
Region the process of establishing
ghettos began in the second part of
1941
and finished
in the summer of
1942.
In many places the Nazi
authorities created special quarters/zones for the Jews.
Later, part of them were converted into closed ghettos.
In the
Rzeszów
Region seventeen of them were estab¬
lished. The biggest ones were placed in
Przemyśl
and
Rzeszów,
minor ones in
Cieszanów, Dębica, Głogów
Małopolski, Jasło, Kolbuszowa, Korczyna, Krosno,
Lubaczów, Majdan Królewski, Sędziszów Małopols¬
ki
and Sieniawa. The great majority of them (ninety
percent) were established in
1942
which was connect¬
ed with the concentration of the Jews just before their
extermination, though many ghettos in the eastern part
of the
Kraków
District existed only for a few months.
The ghettos in
Lubaczów, Przemyśl
and
Rzeszów
became exceptions as they were liquidated in
1943
and
1944.
The operation of murdering the Jews in GG was
named „Operation
Reinhard ,
and the execution of it
was entrusted to the specially created headquarters,
supervised by
SS-Brigadeführer
Odilo Globocnik,
superior commander of
SS
and police in the Lublin
District. In the
Rzeszów
Region, the action of
exterminating the Jews was carried out under the
control of the commanding officer of the
SS
headquarters and the police of the
Kraków
District
-
SS-Hauptsturmftihrer Martin Fellenz.
According to the assumptions of „Operation
Reinhard , all
ghettos in the
Rzeszów
Region were
supposed to be liquidated by the end of December
1942.
According to these statements, the Nazis started
the extermination of the Jewish inhabitants of the
Rzeszów
Region as from spring
1942.
The main site
of the extermination of the Jews from the
Rzeszów
Region was the camp in
Bełżec.
During each deporta¬
tion some people were shot on the spot. Only in some
places where the number of the Jewish people was
low, or the transportation was a burden

everyone
was killed. The largest executions took place in

1943,
due to the lasting action of the extermi¬
nation, there came a radical change in the status of the
Jewish prisoners in labour camps.
In September the decision was made to liquidate
most of the camps and exterminate the remaining
workgroups. The people imprisoned in the camps
were driven out or murdered on the spot. In this way
many of the forced labour camps for the Jewish peo¬
ple became places of their extermination.
From autumn
1943
the Nazis started to cover up
the crime tracks of their genocide in the
Rzeszów
Region, hence during the liquidation of the labour
camps the dead bodies were burned, and the ashes
were spread or driven away and
spüt
into rivers.
The fact of covering up the crime tracks by the
Nazi soldiers was quite typical not only for the end of
the war. The scenes of the crimes were mainly hidden
just after the executions by levelling such an area,
sowing grass, growing trees, or by burning the victims
bodies.
Due to these actions it is now extremely difficult
to ascertain how many Jews were murdered in mass
executions, how many of them died in the extermina¬
tion camp in
Bełżec,
and how many died in ghettos
because of the living conditions which prevailed
there. Similarly, it is impossible to provide the exact
number of Jews killed in many places by mass and
inhuman slaughter.
