Summary
The work of author, journalist, theologian and politician An¬
drievs Niedra
(1871-1942)
has received contradictory reviews both
during the time of Latvian independence (prior to WW II) and during
the subsequent Soviet occupation. Since Latvia has regained indepen¬
dence, his work is viewed from a new perspective, although now scholars
and researchers are focusing on Niedra s work in the social and political
spheres.

Biruta
Gudrike
(1928-2006)
is the first extensive review exploration dedicated
to Niedra s literary works. This book is the last work by the literary his¬
torian Gudrike; she passed away while working on the final pages of the
monograph.
Andrievs Niedra explored many literary genres: he wrote poetry, stories,
novels, plays, literary critiques,
publicistic
compositions, as well as essays
and humoresques. The problems and complexities of the developing Latvian
intellectual awareness was always a central theme for him
-
its role in the
life of the nation as well as the long-standing conflict between the German
landed gentry and Latvian peasants. Even though a patriot and defender
of his nation s spiritual values, he nevertheless believed an evolutionary
path was best. Rejecting a revolutionary uprising and the brutality such a
course would bring, he took a stand against the
1905
revolution and was
therefore labeled traitor to his people . Unfortunately, he was not able to
rid himself of this label for the remainder of his life. As a theologian with
an academic education, Andrievs Niedra could not accept the proffered

socialist ideology, the idea that might is right, or the domination of one
political group over others.
When discussing Niedras individualistic style, Gudrike emphasizes his
selection of material, his talent for developing dynamic settings fraught
with tension and memorable characters, including well drawn portrayals of
society s criminal elements. From a rich vocabulary he selected the words
that could best reveal the essence of whatever he portrayed.
In her monograph, the author underscores Andrievs Niedras unique
personality, pointing out his multi-faceted and erudite character, which al¬
lowed him to be unusually productive, resolute in his goals, and steadfast in
his convictions, as well as reveal him to be somewhat of a risk-taker, which
more often than not caused him to be in conflict with those around him.
At times, however, Andrievs Niedras work reveals carelessness and haste
which prevent the full realization of his creative ideas.
The two title words of this book

It is through theses two professions, or two ways of looking at the world, that
influenced Niedra and complemented each other throughout his lifetime.
His desire to make the world a better place through words, either written
or spoken from the pulpit, always came first for him, the call to make each
person believe that his or her mission on earth was to perform great, good
and long-lasting deeds. Eyewitnesses recall that Niedra s audiences listened
to his sermons with bated breath. But it was not only his talents as an orator
that commanded large audiences; it was also the talent of the writer, aware
of the power of the word.
