The book is devoted to the political history of Czech Germans. It covers the period
between the Revolution
1848
and the forced migration of the German population from
Czechoslovakia after World War II. Special attention has been paid to the years
1918-1938.
The author has presented the evolution of the German political scene in the Czech lands,
the programs of the main political organizations and parties, the origin of the Czech-Ger¬
man conflict and the history of the unsuccessful attempts at its solution. He stresses the
ideological circumstances of the Czech Germans presumptions, including, above all, their
subordination of their main political current to the radical nationalism of
a
völkisch
character, rejecting the concept of an open society and dming at the construction of an
anti-individualistic and anti-democratic people s community (Volhgemeinschaft)
.
This kind
of nationalism shaped the mental structure of a great many Czech Germans already before
World War I; after
1918
it provided the foundation for the popularity of authoritarian and
totalitarian tendencies, fully revealed by the great economic depression of the thirties.
The German national-socialist party, banned in Czechoslovakia in
1933,
as well as
Konrad
Henlein s Sudeten German Home Front, later renamed as the Sudeten German Party (SdP)
had
völkisch
-nationalistic roots. The popular support of the German population for the
SdP manifested itself, among others, in the enthusiastic acceptance of the idea of a peo¬
ple s community, which in the years
1935-1938
assumed a distinctly totalitarian and
racist character. In this sense the
völkisch
nationalism marked out the road of the po¬
litical evolution of the Czech Germans, leading to complicity in the destruction of Czech
statehood in the years
1938-1939
and in the occupation of the Czech lands by the Nazi
Third Reich.

Dieses Buch widmet sich der politischen Geschichte der Sudetendeutschen. Es umfasst
den Zeitraum zwischen dem Völkerfrühling und der Aussiedlung der deutschen Bevölke¬
rung aus der Tschechoslowakei nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, wobei der Fokus am stärk¬
sten auf die Jahre 1918-1938 fallt. Vorgestellt werden die Evolution der deutschen poli¬
tischen Szene, die Programme der wichtigsten Gruppierungen und politischen Parteien,
sowie die Genese des deutsch-tschechischen Konfliktes und die Geschichte der missglück¬
ten Versuche, diesen beizulegen. Ein wesentlicher Akzent wurde auf die ideologischen
Bedingtheiten der Gesinnung von Sudetendeutschen gelegt, dabei vor allem auf die Un¬
terordnung der Hauptströmung ihrer Politik dem radikalen Nationalismus völkischer
Prägung, der das Konzept einer offenen Gesellschaft ablehnte und den Aufbau einer an¬
tiindividualistischen und antidemokratischen Volksgemeinschaft anstrebte. Diese Art des
Nationalismus formierte die Denkstrukturen vieler Sudetendeutscher bereits vor dem
Ersten Weltkrieg und nach 1918 war er der Grund für die Beliebtheit autoritärer und
totalitärer Tendenzen, welche die große Wirtschaftskrise der 1930er Jahre offenbarte.
Völkische Wurzeln hatte sowohl die 1933 in der Tschechoslowakei verbotene deutsche
nationalsozialistische Partei (DNSAP), als auch die im gleichen Jahr entstandene Sude¬
tendeutsche Heimatfront von Konrad Henlein, die dann in die Sudetendeutsche Partei
(SdP) umbenannt wurde. Die massive Unterstützung der SdP seitens der deutschen Be¬
völkerung kam u.a. in Form enthusiastischer Akzeptanz der von ihr verfochtenen Idee
einer Volksgemeinschaft zum Vorschein, die in den Jahren 1935-1938 deutlich totalitäre
und rassistische Züge annahm. In diesem Sinne wies der völkische Nationalismus der
politischen Evolution der Sudetendeutschen den Weg, bis zu ihrer Teilnahme an der
Zerstörung des tschechoslowakischen Staates in den Jahren 1938-1939 und der Besatzung
des tschechischen Territoriums durch das Dritte Reich.

Kniha se věnuje politickým dějinám českých Němců. Zahrnuje období mezi tzv. jarem
národů a odsunem německého obyvatelstva z Československa po druhé světové válce,
přičemž zvláštní důraz je kladen na léta

V knize jsou vyloženy vývoj německé
politické scény, programy hlavních politických stran a také geneze česko-německého kon¬
fliktu a historie neúspěšných pokusů o jeho zažehnání. Velký důraz je kladen na podmí¬
něnost ideologických postojů českých Němců, především podřízení hlavního proudu jejich
politiky radikálnímu nacionalismu
